NFL Banned Hip Drop Tackle

The NFL owners have unanimously banned hip drop tackle over the objections of the NFLPA.

This is such a stupid rule. Why not ban all forms of tackling? Why not ban defense in general?

Why are the owners trying to destroy football?

Give them time. They’ll ban tackling as a whole soon enough.

One position at a time… They’ve greatly hamstrung defenders tackling QBs already.

The swivel is what’s banned. I don’t see the point, but there is a distinction, and that’s it.

Not just the swivel, you need to also make contact with the lower portion of the players legs for it to be a penalty. I’m not 100% on that.

The nuances of the rule will trigger all sorts of official replays and reviews.

Wrapping up a players legs with your arms while dropping your body weight is just a tackle. It’s the spinning on the way down from the tackler that’s injuring players, or so they claim. It’s a contact sport. I guess we’ll see how it’s enforced.

This is what’s on the NFL site.

“Grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms and
Unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee”

I take this to mean you have to end up trapping the runners legs below the knee for it to be a penalty.
