My Mother is believing she is partly Jewish because her Grandmother's maiden and married names were Shubat and Batista. (Her Mom denies they are Jewish, but really Croatian) My Mom really wants to be Jewish. Now, that would be great, but are these names Jewish? I would hate to break her heart, but I want her to know the truth.

I don't know, but I think if your mom is Jewish, that makes you Jewish, too. Mozzle Tav! (It's highly unlikely that I spelled that right. hehe.)

I have friends who are named reed and smith who are jewish...so its not the name...its the faith..

The name comes from the father. i.e. your mother's maiden name is her father's name. And a person is Jewish if their mother is Jewish, regardless of the father.... so your whole family could have very non-Jewish sounding names, but you could very well be Jewish.
You can't figure this out by name. You have to find out if your grandmother is or isn't Jewish. If she is, then you're mother is Jewish... and so are you.
Otherwise, she may need to go through the conversion process.

2. Have you ever felt that if you did not practice law or become a doctor, you were somehow letting her down?
3. Does she over-feed you?
4. Does she look on your significant other with mistrust and suspicion?
5. Has she ever commented on the amount of Chutzpah you have been showing lately?
