Brought to you by the people responsible for Skunked Beer and the lie that small round pieces of ham are bacon.

Really why do you care if we have free and reduced price lunches for kids. It's about one of the only things I don't care about as far as "social programs" I'd rather a kid eat at least one good meal a day than to pay for a crack heads apartment, car and fix because they are too lazy to work.

Oh yeah I hate hockey too.

Wow! Good point
When I was a kid...many kids went home for lunch because we had an hour...we had a half hour lunch and a half hour recess...Those kids who had moms that didn't work and lived with in a 15 minute walk from school could go home for lunch...Now they have 20-25 minutes for lunch...and kids who bring their lunches often don't have time to eat everything because they get more with packed lunches then they do with school lunches...but the school lunches aren't more nutritious then packed lunches...they are just smaller and quicker to eat...My kids by the way have always taken their lunches...mom wants to make sure they are eating right! And they do not have any obesity issues at all...Both are tall for their ages...off the charts...but neither are fat. He is a runner and she is a dancer...I ate school lunches with all it's starches and carbs...and I always had weight problems... Hmmm...are our schools making our kids sick as adults, because of what they feed them as children.

I'm definately all for schools serving nutritionally sound lunches if they are going to provide lunch. However, I don't think blaming America's obesity epidemic on cafeteria lunches is teh correct way to think of it.

At any rate some of the problems of cafeteria lunches could be solved with some relatively simple (though slightly less cost effective) modifications:

-using fresh fruit instead of canned fruit or juice
-limiting the use of highly processed meats and cheeses
-limiting the use of breaded and fried foods to one meal per week
-using whole grains
-opting for lean protein instead of using more fatty proteins
-offering steamed vegetables or raw vegetables
-making sure any sauces/dressings used as "dips" for fruits and veggies have some nutritional value (for example: yogurt dip for fruit)

When I grew up, had very little. We lived in a 900 sq. ft. home, dad drove used cars, worked two jobs to send us to catholic school, and yet we still somehow had money for lunch. I mean really, how much does a PBJ and an apple cost, anyway? If you can't afford that, you shouldn't have kids, and probably should just compost yourself to save the rest of the country the burden.
What do they do with their foodstamps? Sell them for booze and cigs?

All great ideas for keeping some of the extra pounds off the kids, but do you know how much of it will end up in the garbage? Some schools serve these great , nutrious lunches and then allow students to use vending machines at lunchtime. Granted some of the worst offenders have been removed from the vending machines, but baked cheese doodles are better than raw carrots so the carrots end up in the garbage can.

If that were the case, they would be violating the law.

We don't run into this issue with snack at our school because that's ALL we serve, there is no alternative. You either eat it or you can be hungry. I think they ought to do the same with school lunches.

I agree....ask the Canadian---How do they ENJOY our current Health Care Plan that their government subscribes to when their own system can't handle the load???
