Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

That looked to be a great charity karting event -- two Colombians (Chaves, Saavedra) and two Penske drivers (Castroneves, Logano). Naturally, it was Spiderman and Sliced Bread, his Penske mates, on the top two steps.

We've all been hearing the tragic news about actor Paul Walker, who died in the fiery crash of a Porsche in California. The owner/driver of the car was Walker's friend, Roger Rodas. Rodas was the CEO of Always Evolving, the tuner house that owns several such high performance vehicles.

And here's the kicker. The owner just previous to Rodas was IndyCar driver Graham Rahal. Rahal, the fifth owner, owned the Carrera GT for a year, and sold it in a deal for a Ferrari GTO. It was Rahal who fit the car with the distinctive black alloy wheels, (the stock wheels are silver,) that made the car so recognizable at Southern California car events.

This is Rahal's pic of the car:

There were fewer than 1,300 of the V-10, 610-hp, midengine cars built from 2004-07 and this was a 2005 model, with just over 3,200 miles on it at the time of the crash, DESPITE being owned by six different people. That shows that the car was much more of an investment than a driver's car.

Rahal, speaking of the car last year, said, "I get bored with cars pretty quickly. The Carrera GT is just harder to drive, and I drive my cars a lot. It says it has traction control, but that traction control on that car is not going to do a thing to save you, and that's what I love about it. Part of me is very happy about it and part of me regrets it. It was a great, great car......The carbon clutch, things like that are a challenge, but if I was insanely wealthy and could have 10 supercars, a Carrera GT would be one."

Rodas was NOT without driving skills. He was a two-time race winner in the Pirelli World Challenge series.

Another nice pik from Medellin - IndyCar's Carlos Munoz, a Bogata native, with NASCAR's Kurt Busch and a future Colombian wheelman:

    Tony immortalized at last....

Tony Kanaan has finally gotten his likeness on the Borg-Warner trophy for winning the 2013 Indy 500. In a ceremony today the new likeness was revealed for the first time. Here is a close-up of the new face:

And here's Tony having fun re-creating the image in the flesh...

Tony's face is the bottom row of the pedestal, closest to him. Said he, "They did a pretty good job!"

Okay now, HERE'S SOME FUN! This is the video of the Race #1 from the Carrera de Estrellas just held in Medellin. It's in Spanish but it doesn't take much to understand what's going on. These guys and gal are having A BALL.

    The race started this way:

    1 - Joey Logano (NASCAR)
2 - Gustavo Yacaman (Indy Lights, Sports Cars)
3 - Carlos Munoz (Indy Lights, IndyCars)
    4 - Julian Leal (Formula Renault 3.5, GP-2)
5 - Manuela Vasquez (KF-2, Renault Clio Cup)
6 - Gabby Chavez (Indy Lights)
    7 - Kurt Busch (NASCAR)
    8 - Helio Castroneves (IndyCars)
    9 - Sebastien Saavedra (IndyCars)
10 - Juan Pablo Montoya (IndyCars, Formula 1, NASCAR)

Enjoy this 25 minutes of racing for the love of racing and watch the home-town hero JPM prove why he is indeed heroic.

Did anyone catch the new numbers being used for Montoya (#2) and Kurt Busch (#41)? Read the second race was the "battle of the international stars" as Spider-man and Sliced Bread battled for the victory. Roger Penske must have been smiling and the Colombian crowd cheering to see the other two Penske men in the race battling for the win.

    P. S. Don't be surprised to see Montoya ask his INDYCAR teammates, two months removed from racing, to try Kurt Busch's Busch-Whacked Mud Run in October. Saw pics of that and you wonder if the karting races are better or mud runs.

The first race was an all-Colombian podium. Race #2 was Brazil, USA, Colombia/USA (Chavez has dual citizenship,) so it was definitely more international! I'm sure both Logano and Castroneves were a bit embarrassed by their race 1 performance, and were going to exact their revenge.

Of course, the #2 is assigned to Roger Penske in the IndyCars, and I'm betting they asked Monty to run it in everything he does, from now on, so as to engender familiarity. As of now, if he was to race motorized toilets - yes, there are such races! - he would now have a number 2 on it - NOT IN IT!!

I'm also sure Monty was grateful for the help his former NASCAR colleagues gave him this weekend and would happily reciprocate.

To paraphrase Sally Field, when they like you, they REALLY like you! So must Mike Conway be saying. The Englishman from Kent has not only secured a full-time ride in IndyCar next year (see post # 14) but has just signed a deal to become Toyota's LMP1 development and substitute driver in the World Endurance Championship sports car series.

It's EASY to see why Mike is on the boil right now. Mike was on the G-Drive/Delta-ADR LMP2 squad last year and the boys drove to SEVEN top ten finishes, including FOUR race wins in the WEC LMP2 class:

He also made time to appear in 6 IndyCar races where he earned 5 top-tens, including a 3rd and a 1st for Dale Coyne at Detroit:

The full Toyota LMP1 squad from last year will return - Kazuki Nakajima, Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre, Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stephane Sarrazin - but as Kazuki has an occasional duty to perform for Petronas in Formula Nippon Conway WILL LIKELY race in the top WEC class next year.

    The nice thing?

His IndyCar ride schedule with Ed Carpenter Racing fits neatly with the WEC schedule, making this all possible.

They like him. They really, really like him.

Tony settles in and immediately makes a difference.

Tony Kanaan joined his new teammates Charlie Kimball and series champ Scott Dixon in Sebring today as the Chip Ganassi squad starts preparing for 2014. Joining the three was Alex Tagliani who was shaking down the team's fourth car, the #10 car, in lieu of the recently retired Dario Franchitti. (Tagliani would love to get that job permanently but so far, no one has been announced...)

    Tony with Charlie Kimball

Tony was in his #8 car for the day, with NTT Data/TNT Energy Drink sponsorship on the ride.

Kanaan and his engineer Eric Cowden, who came along with the Brazilian, were of immediate use to the team, as they were the only guys with Chevy engine experience in the place. As Ganassi has switched from Honda to Chevy for 2014 the information they can impart will put the squad weeks up on data acquisition and driver info.

    Good start!

The rumor du jour...and it's a potentially BIG ONE!

Now, this is still developing, but it is getting legs. This is about Simona de Silvestro. She MAY be getting a look-see by the Formula 1 Sauber team for a ride in 2014.

The Swiss driver was at the Formula 1 race at Austin last month. She was there to host the F1 in Schools event. (F1 in Schools is an international competition for school children, the goal of which is to engage them in engineering, science and math.) Simona was hosting 60-odd girls from all over the world who had won local competitions and were subsequently brought to Austin to see the F-1 race.

Here is Simona with the young winners. She is the gal in the middle in black. (The only guy in the shot is to her left.)

See the black-haired woman to Simona's right? That is Monisha Kaltenborn. Monisha Kaltenborn is the Team Principal and CEO of the Swiss team Sauber.

Here the two together again later:

    The Ecclestone connection...

The rumor actually started a while back, as Bernie Ecclestone - the head honcho of Formula 1 - was asking everyone who should know what woman could potentially be the first woman in F-1 in the modern era. The answer - on both sides of the pond - was that the only woman who was F-1 capable today is Simona.

Now, adding fuel to the fire
....Simona was also seen speaking with Sauber driver Nico Hulkenberg in Austin...

...and TODAY Hulkenberg announced that he will be leaving Sauber to join the Force India squad, which opens up a seat at Sauber.

Why is this rumor somewhat credible? Because de Silvestro is a free agent as of right now; because Sauber has at least one and probably two seats open; because Bernie Ecclestone wants a woman in the series; because de Silvestro has been seen with Sauber's top brass more than once, now. And of course, because de Silvestro is the ONLY Swiss driver besides her former karting competitor Sebastien Buemi who is capable of competing in F-1 for the Swiss team.

De Silvestro spent about a month at season's end here in the States - long enough to show up in Austin, at least - but is now at her folk's home in Switzerland. Her people have been ABSOLUTELY SILENT about where she will be in 2014.

Will this happen? Odds are NO, it won't. But if it does, you can now say, "Oh. Hey, that's OLD NEWS!

    M

    UPDATE!
    - Okay, let me just brag here - DAMN, I am good! Racer magazine's Marshall Pruett has just come to the same conclusions as your humble servant:

.........The Swiss driver recently aided the Swiss Sauber F1 team with a promotional endeavor at the Austin Formula 1 round, reigniting speculation she could be in the frame for something involving F1. Her manager continues to talk with IndyCar teams, including KV, about a seat in 2014, but the lack of recent news or clear plans on the topic certainly gives rise to mounting speculation that she could be headed elsewhere. IndyCar needs a top-line female driver, as does F1 – even in a testing role. She'd be an absolute home run in the second Target car, but with limited interest from Ganassi, we could be waiting and watching to see which series wants de Silvestro the most.....

    The rumor HAS LEGS!

    M, again
