Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

The Indy Lights are qualified for the Freedom 100!....

The Lights were supposed to have two practice sessions before attempting to qualify for Friday's Freedom 100 race, but the rains came to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway most of the day, today. Finally, in the afternoon, the rains stopped and the track dried, allowing the gang a shortened practice session, just to make sure the cars were ready to qualify.

Then, they made their way to the track, one at a time, to qualify. The procedure is simple: one warm-up lap is followed by two hot laps. Those two laps are then averaged and the fastest guy is on pole.

Here is the way they will grid for the 2017 Freedom 100, with times for the TOP SIX:R denotes rookie; the speed is the two-lap average and the time is for two laps, combined.

    Row 1

Pole - Matheus Leist (R), Carlin - time of 01:30.3625s for a speed of 199.198mph

    P2 - Colton Herta (R), Andretti Steinbrenner - time of 01:30.6124s for a speed of 198.648mph

    Row 2

P3 - Dalton Kellett, Andretti Autosport - time of 01:30.9039s for a speed of 198.011mph

    P4 - Ryan Norman (R), Andretti Autosport - time of 01:31.0482s for a speed of 197.697mph

    Row 3

P5 - Zachary Claman De Melo, Carlin - time of 01:31.0725s for a speed of 197.645mph

    P6 - Aaron Telitz (R), Belardi Auto Racing - time of 01:31.2705s for a speed of 197.216mph

    Row 4

    P7 - Neil Alberico, Carlin
    P8 - Garth Rickards (R), Carlin

    Row 5

P9 - Shelby Blackstock, Belardi Auto Racing
P10 - Juan Piedrahita, Team Pelfrey

    Row 6

P11 - Kyle Kaiser, Juncos Racing
P12 - Santiago Urrutia, Belardi Auto Racing

    Row 7

    P13 - Nico Jamin (R), Andretti Autosport
    P14 - Nicolas Dapero (R), Juncos Racing

    Notable:

    - Matheus set a new track record, shattering Ethan Ringel's 2016 speed of 197.866mph. The young Brazilian also set the fastest lap in the shortened practice with a speed of 201.032mph. It is astounding to realize that this is Leist's first experience on an oval, but then, the same was true of Ethan when he set the previous record.

    - Also having their best starts of the season will be Dalton Kellett in P3 and Ryan Norman in P4.

    Matheus Leist

The race will be on Friday, right in the middle of Carb Day celebrations and events. NBC-SN will be covering all of Carb Day LIVE, starting at 11:00am EASTERN time. If you wish to just watch the Freedom 100 coverage starts at 12:30 EASTERN time. The weather? Cool, in the 60s, but DRY!.

Uh, oh...He's doing it again...Scott Hargrove's winning ways continue....

Last weekend, the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada series kicked off their year with two rounds of racing at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park - aka Mosport - and Indy Lights driver Scott Hargrove busted out two WINS - both from pole and both flag-to-flag leads.

Scott was the 2014 Champion of this series and took 7 WINS in the series in 2015 and 6 WINS in the series last year. In other words, winning in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge is a regular thing with Hargrove.

If there was anyone to give him a fight of it, it was fellow Canadian Zacharie Robichon in the # 98 for Mark Motors Racing. Zacharie was fastest in practice, but Scott took pole in a record-breaking run for CTMP at 01:18.902 seconds.

During both races, Zacharie went from P3 to P2 and held that spot to the end. P3 in Round 1 was Remo Ruscitti for Open Road Racing while P3 in Round 2 was Rolex 24 winner Michael de Quesada for Alegra Motorsports.

After these two opening rounds here are the TOP FIVE in points:

    1 - Scott Hargrove 42
    2 - Zacharie Robichon 36
    3 - Remo Ruscitti 30
    4 - Patrick Dussault 22
    5 - Tim Sanderson 21

The next two rounds for Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada will be at Circuit Gille Villeneuve, June 9-11.

Great exhibit at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum....

While we wait for the start of the 101 Running of the Indy 500 - and we may have to wait until Monday, due to rain - we want to present this great 3-piece video of Racer magazine's Robin Miller and Marshall Pruett, looking at the special AJ Foyt exhibit that the Museum is presenting at this time.

These are very special cars driven by an extraordinary driver - the like of which we may never see again:

Yes, they're not polished and they're not perfect, but damn, they are certainly approachable...
