Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

So Bathurst is Erebus, what will be Andretti Autosport, and Team Penske as 1-2-3. Hmmmm . . . seems racing's biggest names in the States are going to Supercars. To remember six years ago when Mike Joy called the action live for the US audience, he called the entrance into The Chase as The Kink because it reminded me of the wicked fast entrance into Road America's turn.
    Ashamed to be an American.

Yes, Bobby. It looks like the American team interest in Supercars is accelerating, thanks to Roger's success with Dick Johnson. How long before Chip Ganassi sees the light, or maybe RLL?

I'll be featuring Scott McLaughlin's wonderful lap in qualifying at the Bathhurst 1K in an upcoming episode of Link Theater. Look for it. I got choked up, almost as much as Scott!

We have the Champs from the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup...

Following the Petit Le Mans, the numbers have been totaled up and the points have been awarded for the TPNAEC - the endurance championship within the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Points of varying levels are awarded during the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen and the 10-hour Motul Petit Le Mans - not just for the final posting but also at strategic times during each race, so WINS alone are not enough. You need to perform all throughout the race to be champs. Check it out!

P class - The TPNAEC Driver Championship goes to Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Felipe Albuquerque - the pilots of the # 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi V.R. for Action Express. The trio beat out Ricky and Jordan Taylor, 46 to 42 points.

Left to right, Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Felipe Albuquerque at Watkins Glen, 2017:

Team Champions for P class are the # 5 Mustang Sampling Racing guys, while the Manufacturer Champions are Cadillac. Felipe Albuquerque is currently driving for United Autosport in the European Le Mans Series but it looks like he will be full-time in IMSA, next season, partnering with Joao Barbosa in the # 5 for Action Express, while Chrisitan Fittipaldi will be in the four endurance races, only.

GTLM class - The driver Champs are the # 911 Porsche GT Team of Dirk Werner and Patrick Pilet with 40 points, just beating the # 66 Ford team of Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller by 1 point.

Patrick Pilet (left) and Dirk Werner

Team Champions in the GTLM class are the # 911 Porsche GT Team, but Ford took the Manufacturer Championship by 1 point over Porsche, 45 to 44.

    continued....

We have the Champs from the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup...(part 2)...

In the GTD class the Driver's title goes to Mario Farnbacher, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating in the # 33 Riley Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3. They beat out Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan by 39 to 36 points.

Left to right, Mario Farnbacher, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating

The Team Championship in the GTD class
goes to the # 33 Riley Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3 guys and the Manufacturer Championship is owned by Mercedes.

Finally, in the PC class the Driver's title goes handily to Kyle Masson, and Indy Lights drivers James French and Patricio O'Ward driving the # 38 ORECA FLM09 for Performance Tech Motorsports by a whopping 16 points over the boys from BAR1 Motorsports.

Left to right, Pato O'Ward, James French and Kyle Masson

The Team Championship in PC class goes to the # 38 Performance Tech Motorsports team and there is no Manufacturer title, as all PC-class cars are ORECA FLM09s.

This was the last season of the class as next year only P class, GTLM class and GTD class will contest the WeatherTech Championship and the TPNAEC. The boys from Performance Tech WON 3 of 4 TPNAEC races and podiumed all 4. James French earned 3 of 4 poles and Patricio O'Ward earned 4 Fastest Laps in the 4 races.

At many races of the 8-race WeatherTech season there were only 3 entrants in the class and some will say this is why the Perf Tech boys did so well, but in fact they BROKE the PC-class track records at every venue this season, meaning since the introduction of the type to SportsCar racing in 2009 they were the best LM PC-class team of all time at each one of those 8 tracks.

Just phenomenal performance and a great way to end the series. WELL DONE!! Now, someone get these guys a ride for 2018!

It's a BIRTHDAY!...and the birthday boy was this kid....

He was 9 years old in this pic, taken in Brazil in 2004. He has grown up to be one of the best junior formula racers in the world, but he hasn't gotten a whole lot bigger

This is Victor Franzoni who turned 22 year old on last Thursday. Franzoni is the 2017 Pro Mazda Champion and will be driving a full season of Indy Lights in 2018 - something made possible ONLY by his incredible season of racing in the Mazda Road to Indy in 2017, earning him a scholarship worth almost $800,000.00.

Victor took that kart and honed his racing skills for years, finally jumping into cars in 2012. Always on a shoe-string budget, his first year in USF2000 came in 2014 where he earned 2 WINS and 7 podiums for Afterburner Autosport. In 2015 he split his time between Afterburner in USF2000 (3 more WINS and 5 podiums) and M1 Racing in Pro Mazda. In 2016 he returned to USF2000 for yet another season and WON 3 times with 11 podiums for Arms Up Motorsports. It was clear that the talent was there. All he needed was a chance with a great team.

In 2017 he was all set to return to Arms Up for another season of USF2000 when he got a last-minute call from Ricardo Juncos to come race in Pro Mazda for 2017...and the rest is racing history. In his spectacular season-long battle with Anthony Martin for Cape Motorsports Victor earned 7 WINS, 12 podiums, 5 poles and 6 Fastest Laps.

    Victor Franzoni

It's a friggin' racing fairytale that no one in Hollywood would dare write. Feliz Aniversário, Victor!

Tuesday - The two OEMs test the 2018 aero kit at Road America and Mid-Ohio....

Chevrolet and Honda completed the first of five test days that each manufacturer will be granted by IndyCar to evaluate the new 2018 universal aero kit. Chevroelt asked Spencer Pigot from Ed Carpenter Racing and Simon Pagenaud from Team Penske to test the kits at Road America while Honda went instead to Mid-Ohio with Chip Ganassi Racing and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. The Mid-Ohio drivers were not revealed but Scott Dixon and James Hinchcliffe are the only drivers confirmed to be on those respective teams for 2018.

Spencer Pigot's Chevrolet at Road America with the 2018 aero kit

Simon Pagenaud put in about 80 laps in his Team Penske Chevy. His assessment was that the car will accelerate faster but not top out faster. The brake zones are similar in size but develop in a different place in the corners than the current kit. The car slides around more in the high-speed corners but it telegraphs that sliding much more, making it something the drivers can control - no snap oversteering that ruins your day. In other words, controlled slides! It's going to look like real racing going on out there.

This is helmet cam video from Spencer Pigot.:

It is impossible to tell that this is the new aero kit, because from the cockpit the view is much like the current car. What is evident is what we already knew: IndyCars are the FASTEST cars that have ever wound 'round this storied track. The speeds are just stunning, especially on his 2nd lap, when he is warmed up. Look also for a few times that the car steps out and Pigot quickly saves it - FAST HANDS!

Big news for 2018 - Graham Rahal and Ricky Taylor to drive for Team Penske....

Yes, we knew we would get your attention with that one...but it's TRUE! It's just not in IndyCars. Newly-minted 2017 P-class Champion in the IMSA WeatherTech Series Ricky Taylor for Wayne Taylor Racing will NOT be for Wayne Taylor Racing in 2018. Instead, he has been given the job of co-driving the new P-class Acura ARX-05 DPi with Helio Castroneves and for Team Penske. The 28-year-old will leave his younger brother Jordan Taylor to look for another co-driver for the # 10 Cadillac DPi V.R. that the pair just drove to their first IMSA championship for papa Wayne Taylor.

SportsCar legend and proud papa Wayne Taylor (left) with Ricky

Announced at the same time, IndyCar driver Graham Rahal for Rahal Letterman Lanigan will be added to the Team Penske IMSA squad for the first two Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup races, Daytona and Sebring, as will Team Penske's IndyCar driver Simon Pagenaud. Rahal was chosen due to his familiarity with Honda - RLL is a Honda team, and Graham also drove for Acura at Daytona this season, for Michael Shank Racing - and Graham is also a previous Daytona WINNER for Chip Ganassi, while Pagenaud was the 2010 ALMS Champion in LMP1, driving a Honda HPD ARX-01C for Patron Highcroft Racing.

For the regular WeatherTech season Team Penske now has two great young SportsCar Champions - Ricky Taylor and Dane Cameron - paired with two great IndyCar veterans - Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya. Now, for the Daytona and Sebring races they add two hired-gun previous SportsCar WINNERS in IndyCar drivers Graham Rahal and Simon Pagenaud.

Clockwise from top left, In one car, Dane Cameron, Juan Pablo Montoya and Simon Pagenaud. In the other, Graham Rahal, Helio Castroneves and Ricky Taylor:

    Talk about stacking the deck!

Taylor may be headed to INDYCAR in 2019 if we don't watch out. I can assure you that is happening. Why Rahal in the Penske car is probably a dealership situation to associate with an Acura dealership.

IndyCar has released the 2018 race schedule...

...and it's largely quite similar to the just-completed 2017 season. There are a few date changes but the big change is that Watkins Glen International is off the schedule. A great shame, the iconic track was perfect for the high-speed IndyCars, but the date - Labor Day - produced two lackluster crowds in a row, so instead IndyCar is going to return to Portland International Raceway - a track that the series ran on in the CART and Champ Car era, with the last outing in 2007.

This makes PIR the fourth historic track hosting a return for the series, following Phoenix, Road America and Gateway. The 1.96-mile, 12-turn track is located just North of downtown Portland, off Interstate 5. According to IndyCar the track will need to make a few updates and additions, but will essentially be the same track layout from the past.

Also dangling out there is a possible return to Mexico City. Following the recent earthquake in the area, all talks of a return were put on hold, but those talks are starting up again. If Mexico city comes in, it will likely be located between Mid-Ohio and Pocono in August, where there is currently a three-week rest. The venue would be the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, named for Mexican racing legends, brothers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez.

Here is the 17-race schedule released today: (SC = Street Course, RC = Road Course, O = Oval)

March 11 – Streets of St. Petersburg - SC
    April 7 – Phoenix Raceway - O (night race)
April 15 – Streets of Long Beach - SC
April 22 – Barber Motorsports Park - RC
May 12 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course - RC
    May 27 – Indianapolis 500 - O
June 2-3 – Raceway at Belle Isle Park - SC (double header)
June 9 – Texas Motor Speedway - O (night race)
    June 24 – Road America - RC
    July 8 – Iowa Speedway - O
July 15 – Streets of Toronto - SC
    July 29 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course - RC
    Aug. 19 – Pocono Raceway - O
Aug. 25 – Gateway Motorsports Park - O (night race)
Sept. 2 – Portland International Raceway - RC
    Sept. 16 – Sonoma Raceway - RC

And here is IndyCar's video of the schedule:

And yes, we have time to completely humiliate Team Penske's drivers...

...as they all try to draw North Carolina - the state that Team Penske's Mooresville headquarters is located in and the state they all call home during the racing season, as we look at Round 8 of "The Penske Games", where Roger Penske extracts a heavy toll from his NASCAR and IndyCar drivers for the privilege of working for him.

    Take a look:

Our 3rd grade Geography teacher, Sister Mary Rose, would be horrified.

We are a week away from the 2017 iteration of the Chris Griffis Memorial Test....

Every year about this time many of the teams in all three series that make up the Mazda Road to Indy - USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights - congregate to test returning veterans and new prospective drivers, as everyone tries to get a feel for whom they want to drive for and whom they want driving for them. It's a grand event meant to pair drivers and teams for the new season of racing in 2018.

This year, the Chris Griffis will once again be held on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. New this year will be the Tatuus PM-18 which the Pro Mazda testers will be using for the first time to evaluate possible drivers in that series.

One of the newbies coming in for her first Chris Griffis is karting champion Zoey Edenholm from Scottsdale, Arizona, as the 16-year old has decided to get into formula cars. She will be testing for Bryn Nutall's UK-based BN Racing which was new to USF2000 last season but nevertheless gave rookie David Malukas a great platform to impress everyone from.

    Zoey Edenholm

In her element for Team Koene in X30 Junior class

Zoey is just returning from a two-day orientation, peddle adjustment and seat fit in a BN Racing Tatuus USF-17 in Michigan, where she was coached by 2017 Pro Mazda Champion Victor Franzoni who is BN Racing's driver coach. She turned a few laps to make sure all is well and she and the car are now ready for the Chris Griffis.

Zoey gets advice from Victor (right)

Victor checks the roll hoop height above Edenholm's lid.

Although Edenholm will be testing for BN Racing that is no guarantee she will get a ride with them and also no guarantee that another team may not steal her away. That's the nature of the Chris Griffis - everyone can see what you're doing and how good you are. Teams are clocking everyone - not just their prospects. Good luck, Zoey!

The Canadian Mazda Road to Indy ace drove a 3rd season of USF2000 in 2017 with Exclusive Autosport, which was new to the series, this year. It took a number of races for Exclusive to find their way with the Tatuus USF-17, but about mid-season they started to click and Parker pulled in 3 WINS, 3 poles and 6 podiums, ending the season in 3rd. He also took two WINS in Formula Tour 1600 for Exclusive during the mid-season break, just to keep his hand in.

Parker was counting on winning the USF2000 title to earn a spot in Pro Mazda. That was not to be, so he is scrambling to find a sponsor to get him there. Exclusive Autosport has recently taken possession of at least one Tatuus PM-18 chassis, so we know they plan to race in Pro Mazda. Let's hope that Thompson is their guy.
