Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

Sebring comes alive for four days of February testing....(part 2)....

The were only two cars testing in the MPC class and they were both from Eurosport Racing. The faster was veteran Jon Brownson in the # 34 Elan DP02, besting teammate Tim George in the # 24 by 10.012 seconds - probably only an installation lap by Tim.

    In Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge,
both USA and Canada cars tested at the same time. The rabbit was Anthony Imperato in the # 93 for Wright Motorsports. In the P-1 session Anthony laid down a time of 02:06.101s for a speed of 106.772mph. P2 was Fred Poordad, also for Wright Motorsports. Fred was . 229 seconds off Anthony. This is Fred's first chance to race since his debilitating crash at the 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour.

All four support series will be testing again on Wednesday. Then on Thursday and Friday the 3 classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship test.

GREAT news for USF2000 in 2018 - Cape Motorsports will field Kyle Kirkwood for the full season...

We've been singing the praises of Jupiter, Florida's Kyle Kirkwood for quite a time now. Kyle has always been on a parallel track with fellow Jupiterite and good friend Oliver Askew, the reigning USF2000 Champion. Both were outstanding young karters with multiple national titles. Both were chosen for the 2016 Team USA Scholarship to represent the United States at the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy, where both put in outstanding drives. Both were subsequently in the inaugural Mazda Road to Indy Shootout in 2016, where both advanced to the final 6.

Askew went on to WIN the Shootout and drove to the 2017 USF2000 Championship for Cape Motorsports with the winnings. Kirkwood instead drove in the FIA F4 US Championship in 2017 for Cape Motorsports in their series debut and took that convincingly, with a dominating 9 WINS in 20 outings, more than doubling the points of the runner up.

Kyle Kirkwood for Team USA, 2016

Said the 19-year-old, “It’s truly an honor to join with Cape Motorsports for the second year around. We had such a great 2017 season and to be able to keep that momentum rolling is awesome. It’s always tough learning a new car and a new series, but being with a team that I am very comfortable with and know so well will make the transition very easy.”

Kyle will be in what is now the lone Cape Motorsports USF-17 at the big MRTI Spring Training at Homestead-Miami Speedway this coming Saturday and Sunday. While not yet announced, it is expected that Oliver Askew will also be there, in a Cape Motorsports PM-18 Pro Mazda car, keeping the two friends as teammates for a third year. Good luck in 2018, Kyle!

Two big names in karting will be at Spring Training this weekend...

The annual Spring Training for the Mazda Road to Indy will be held at Homestead Miami Raceway this weekend and among the names of young talents that will be there were two we took notice of: Michael D'Orlando and Sabre Cook. Both are outstanding karters with multiple national titles to their names. While neither has announced their 2018 plans it looks like Michael, at least, is heading to USF2000 in 2018.

    Michael D'Orlando

The tall (6'1") 15-year-old has some experience in formula cars, with a race weekend at New Jersey driving in USAC's F2000 last year for Team Pelfrey where he took a P2 and a P4 in his debut! He also drove for Team Pelfrey at the Chris Griffis Memorial Test in 2017, taking their USF2000 car to a best showing of P6. But it will be for BENIK Kart that Michael will drive at Spring Training, so his eventual plans are still up in the air, while he is hinting that he is in, somewhere.

Sabre Cook trying out cars in 2017

23-year-old Sabre Cook spent 2017 immersing herself in both open-wheel and SportsCars for the first time in her career with a best finish of 2nd place in the SCCA Majors in Formula FE, while simultaneously driving in karts. Sabre was also one of the 6 finalists for the 2017 Team USA Scholarship and drove at the 2017 Chris Griffis Memorial Test for John Cummiskey Racing. For Spring Training Sabre will drive for ArmsUp Motorsports. She only offers that she is working hard at financing her 2018 racing plans.

Let's hope we see one or both get a shot at USF2000 in 2018.
