Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

Let's catch up with Jonathan Kotyk, Team USA Scholarship winner...

Jonathan has put out a short Video blog for the past several days, starting with his announcement of his nomination as one of two young American drivers (the other is Aaron Jeansonne) to represent Team USA at the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy, both in England this month.

Here was Jonathan's initial announcement of his winning the scholarship. Kotyk was in New Jersey at the time, contesting the last two races of the SCCA's F1600 Pro series for Team Pelfrey:

Let's catch up with Jonathan Kotyk, Team USA Scholarship winner...(part 5)...

On Day 5 of his v-blog, Jonathan is in the Dempsey Racing shops as he and Aaron Jeansonne get their seat fits in their Formula Fords. Jonathan is already getting fond of his mechanic, "Cookie":

Let's catch up with Jonathan Kotyk, Team USA Scholarship winner...(part 6)...

In Day 6 Jonathan and Aaron go to a local airport to shake down the cars for the first time, in anticipation of their first day at Donington Park. The wind plays havoc with some of the audio:

Let's catch up with Jonathan Kotyk, Team USA Scholarship winner...(part 7)...

On Day 7 of the V-blog Jonathan reports from Donington Park, where they cars are prepped for race running at Oulton Park. This was the first high-speed running of the cars and Aaron Jeansonne's first real crack at a Formula Ford at speed:

Let's catch up with Jonathan Kotyk, Team USA Scholarship winner...(part 8)...

On Sunday, Jonathan teamed up with Team USA teammate Aaron Jeansonne to make their report from Corby, England, near Cliff and Michelle Dempsey's home, where they are staying. Some of the fun centers around Aaron's Louisiana accent:

Back in early September the Stadium Super Trucks raced at Watkins Glen...

...and we finally have the video from those two races, and a lot of fun they were, as Watkins Glen added the element of rain to the already chaotic racing that is SST racing.

Here is CBS Sports giving you the SSTs from The Glen:

With these results the TOP FIVE in points leaving Watkins Glen are:

    1 - Matthew Brabham 498
    2 - Paul Morris 486
    3 - Robby Gordon 467
    4 - Gavin Harlien 402
    5 - Sheldon Creed 327

The last 2 scheduled race event of the year will be at Lake Elsinore, California, December 15-16.

Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Japanese driver takes the BIG one!...

No, we're not recounting the events of last May, where Tokyo native Takuma Sato WON the 101st Running of the Indy 500 for Andretti Autosport. This last Sunday, Fukushima native Yoshi Muroya WON the World Championship at the Red Bull Air Races held at IMS, by posting a penalty-free run on his last effort, taking the championship with the fastest lap in the process. And indeed Takuma Sato was there to cheer Yoshi on.

Yoshi (with medal in center) and Takuma on his left

Follow this link to see Yoshi's mind-blowing lap:

    https://twitter.com/Redbullairrace/s...60215729041408

WINNING the Challenger Cup was France's Melanie Astles - the first woman to win a Red Bull race in this class - or any class.

    Melanie Astles

Melanie said something akin to what IndyCar driver Simona de Silvestro has said many times - "The car doesn't know you're a woman driving it", but in this case the airplane doesn't know. "There is no difference in the air". Melanie placed fifth overall in the Championship that Yoshi won.

Takuma, who has become a national hero in Japan following his historic Indy 500 WIN, says he now has a brother to share the load...and Indy was the place it all happened for both.

The 2018 Mazda Road to Indy schedules are out...

...and we've got 'em. First, let's look at the Indy Lights schedule. There are 17 races on the Lights schedule with 3 of them on ovals, including the Freedom 100 on Carb Day for the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. All of the races will be in conjunction with a race weekend for the big cars. The championship will end at Portland.

    The 2018 Indy Lights schedule

Next, the Pro Mazda schedule. This will be the first year for the new Tatuus PM-18 car and the schedule has 16 races, including 2 on ovals. One of those will be at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Carb Day for the Indy 500. All other races will be in conjunction with an IndyCar race. The championship will end at Portland.

    The 2018 Pro Mazda schedule

The 2018 Mazda Road to Indy schedules are out...(part 2)...

USF2000 will have 15 races on the schedule and one of them is on an oval - Lucas Oil Raceway, on Carb Day for the Indy 500. All other races will be in conjunction with an IndyCar race. The championship will end at Portland.

    The 2018 USF2000 schedule

Notice that Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 all race together on the same weekends, with the exception of Iowa, which is Indy Lights only, and Gateway, which is the Lights and Pro Mazda, but no USF2000. Also note the USF2000 will have 3 races at Mid-Ohio instead of the two races for the other two series.

If IndyCar adds Mexico City in August - -something they are working on - it is unlikely that the MRTI will go along for the ride.
