Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

She's coming back!...Danica Patrick announces another stab at the Indy 500 today...

Today, NASCAR driver Danica Patrick announced that 2017 was her last season of the popular tin tops and that she is likely retiring from driving - but not before doing two more races: The 2018 Daytona 500 and the 2018 Indy 500 for as yet unidentified teams.

    Danica Patrick

Patrick famously became the first - and so far only - woman to WIN an IndyCar race when she drove to P1 at Motegi in 2008 for Andretti Green Racing, but her most famous races were on another oval - the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where she posted 6 TOP TENS in 7 outings and led 29 laps, to the delight of the crowds there. Her courage to battle for wins was clearly evident.

Danica started her career in IndyCars driving for Team Rahal Letterman and had her best years driving for Andretti Green. But the easiest way to do both Daytona and Indy would be to drive with one team that does both NASCAR and IndyCar, and that is most likely Chip Ganassi Racing, which is only fielding two cars in IndyCar in 2018, leaving plenty of chassis free at Indy.

Patrick left IndyCar for NASCAR-only pastures in 2012, and so missed the entire IndyCar OEM aero-kit period. Those car would have been very difficult for the small driver to drive, given the muscle required to fight the downforce loads. The new-for-2018 aero kit will likely be easier to wrangle, with its reduced downforce, so her timing couldn't be better. In addition, Indy gives a driver the long straights to recover from the corner loads.

One thing is for certain: The IndyCar fans will love having Danica take another stab at the 500. Her fellow drivers are already congratulating her on her return. Here's hoping you have fun, Danica!

It looks like Santiago Urrutia is close to an announcement...

Back in post # 3066 we mentioned that the twice-Vice Champion of Indy Lights was closing in on a deal to drive full time in IndyCar for 2018 and today the pride of Uruguay released a "get-to-know-me" video that seems to be preparing IndyCar fans for his entry, with the possibility of a three-year deal.

    Santi Urrutia

Take a look at this bi-lingual video from Racer magazine, meant for world-wide release:

If Urrutia makes an announcement soon, it will just add to this, the year of the young lions emerging. We already have Zach Veach for three years at Andretti Autosport and both Spencer Pigot at Ed Carpenter Racing and Ed Jones at Chip Ganassi Racing in full-time rides, with Gabby Chaves also expected to be a full-timer for Harding Racing in 2018. Add the latest reveal, Matheus Leist at AJ Foyt, for at least 1 season. Indy Lights 2017 Champ Kyle Kaiser has at least 4 races in the pipe for Juncos Racing and two-time Lights Vice-Champion Jack Harvey may have 6 or more races for an as-yet unnamed team in conjunction with Michael Shank Racing.

    Great days ahead.

Felix Rosenqvist (SWE), who had been on the radar of Chip Ganassi and did a partial Lights season before Formula E came calling, was part of the craziest incident in China during a GT3 race at the FIA GT3 World Cup qualifying race.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY7vA_OuF2o

    Nevertheless, he didn't finish.

The F3 race goes off later tonight (US time) and notable winners of the F3 race that have ties to CART, Champ Car, or INDYCAR or current INDYCAR teams include Mauricio Gugelmin (won in CART), Darren Manning (Ganassi 2004), Takuma Sato, Tristan Gommendy (one CC season, may be in Indy 500), Alexandre Prémat (Penske Supercars co-driver, now based in Las Vegas as driving school instructor), and Mike Conway (has wins in VICS).
    Ashamed to be an American.

Rob Megennis and Rinus VeeKay go racing in MRF Challenge...

The two USF2000 pilots are spending their off-season in a productive way by racing in the Indian-International MRF Challenge series - 16 races over four weekend between November and next February. The series uses F2000 cars equipped to be closer to F3 in power and performance. Rob and Rinus will join 16 other drivers from 13 countries. The series starts at Bahrain for the first 4 rounds, then moves to Dubai, then Abu Dhabi and finishes in Chennai, India.

    Rinus VeeKay

    Rob Megennis

Both guys are coming off great tests at the Chris Griffis Memorial Test, where Rob tested Pro Mazda cars, while Rinus jumped into Indy Lights. No word yet on where either guy will end up in 2018.

And just that quick, Rinus VeeKay gets a WIN in MRF Challenge....

As mentioned in the post above Rinus VeeKay spent this weekend racing in Bahrain in the first 4 rounds of MRF Challenge for 2017-2018. Rinus took pole for Round 1 and after losing the lead on lap 1, but regaining it before the lap ended, the young Dutch driver led handily for the entire race, but his car broke two laps from the end, handing the WIN to Felipe Drugovich.

In Round 2 Drugovich WON again, while VeeKay salvaged a P5 from a P18 start. Finally, in Round 3 Rinus showed his stuff again, and was rewarded with the WIN, this time. Rinus beat Drugovich to the line from pole by almost 8 seconds.

    Rinus triumphant in Round 3

Rinus took pole again for Round 4, but lost the lead to Julien Falchero following a full-course caution, mid-race. Falchero would go on to WIN the round with Rinus .425 seconds off his tail. That gave Rinus a DNF, a P5 a P1 and a P2 for the first weekend. Fellow USF2000 pilot Rob Megennis had a best finish of P5 for the weekend.

The next round for the series will be at Dubai, in December. Way to go on the WIN, Rinus!

SuperNats21 in Las Vegas is over, and the IndyCar contingent did well...

A BIG congrats to all the many class WINNERs of the 21st annual SuperNationals karting grand event, just completed in Las Vegas. A number of IndyCar folks competed all the way through and though none won a class finale a couple were in it to the end.

One of the best shows was by USF2000 pilot David Malukas who pulled in two P2s in the X30 Senior class on the way to the finale, but DNF'd in the finale.

    Dave Malukas

The best performance of the weekend by an IndyCar driver was by Pippa Mann who WON the X30 Masters Last Chance Qualifying race from a P6 start, but like David, Pippa DNF'd in the finale when she was involved in a two-kart battle that took her out early.

Pippa leads the X30 Masters LCQ

    Pippa Mann

Also at the SuperNats this year were Indy Lights pilots Zachary Claman DeMelo and Neil Alberico, IndyCar driver Robert Wickens and USF2000 driver Darren Keane. All expressed a joyful experience and the hope they could return in 2018.

Well, it had to happen, and indeed it's a good thing: The final episode of the Penske Games...

...wherein Roger Penske requires that his IndyCar and NASCAR drivers promote themselves in battles of skill and daring, and this one will decide the Penske Games Champion! It's the balloon toss:

And isn't the result ENTIRELY fitting?! That's that way to do it.
