Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

There was racing at Trois-Rivičres, last weekend...with TWO clean sweeps...(part 2)...

The OTHER clean sweep was in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada, where Indy Lights driver Scott Hargrove WON both races of the weekend in the # 9 Cup Challenge Porsche 991 for Pfaff Motorsports/Castrol. P2 in both races was Hargrove's season-long nemesis, Zacharie Robichon for Mark Motors Racing in the # 98 Cup Challenge Porsche 991. P3 in both races was young Michael de Quesada in the # 31 Cup Challenge Porsche 991 for Alegra Motorsports.

    Scott - Mr. Porsche Cup

Zacharie Robichon is having a fantastic season with 8 P2s and a WIN, but Hargrove has 8 WINS and a P2, and that's the big difference. This weekend, Scott did what Scott frequently does - maximum points for pole, leading the most laps, WINNING and Fastest Lap in both races.

Micheal de Quesada will likely be 3rd in the Championship and he DOES have another fantastic accomplishment on the year: Michael was on the Rolex 24 at Daytona GTD-class WINNING team from Alegra in a Porsche 911 GT3-R.

Zacharie Robichon (left) and Michael de Quesada

Following this event, here are the TOP THREE in Platinum-class points leaving Trois-Rivičres:

    1 - Scott Hargrove 186
    2 - Zacharie Robichon 164
    3 - Michael de Quesada 122

Next up for Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada is their last race weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park - aka Mosport - September 1-3, where the series will run Season Round 5 - the red-flagged race from Watkins Glen - and the last two races of the season, Rounds 11 and 12. A champion will be crowned.

Sebastian Saavedra is Sam Schmidt's driver at Pocono and Gateway...

Word came out today that the young Colombian will take over driver duties in the # 7 car, just vacated by Mikhail Aleshin, (see post # 3089) for at least the next two races - both ovals. Sebastian drove for SPM at Toronto this year and took the car from P20 to P11 - without bending any carbon fiber. Sebastian also drove for Ricardo Juncos in the Indy 500 this year, so these will not be his first oval appearances of the year. They will be his first in a Honda, however.

    Sebastian Saavedra at Toronto, 2017

Sebastian will be sponsored by Gary Peterson's Automatic Fire Sprinklers - his long-time sponsors. No word yet on who will be in the car for Watkins Glen and Sonoma, though Canadian DTM driver for Mercedes Robert Wickens is definitely lobbying hard for the ride.

In other "Sebastien" news, Sebastien Bourdais has been cleared to drive!

After suffering a horrific crash in qualifying the Dale Coyne Racing # 18 at Indianapolis, this season, most people thought the four-time IndyCar Champion would be out for the remainder of the season, with hip and pelvis fractures and a broken rib. But they don't know Sebastien. Not only is his personal health regime spectacular, but his determination is unbounded.

    Sebastien Bourdais

On Tuesday, the French ace was given a clean bill of health by IndyCars doctors to drive again. The only question is will his wife, Claire, ALLOW him to drive on an oval again, this season? Or will he wait for Watkins Glen to return to driving duties?

Seb has used the off-time to both recuperate and rehabilitate himself, but also to take the family - Claire and kids Emma and Alex - on extended vacations in the family RV.

The word is that Dale Coyne wants to keep rookie Esteban Gutierrez - one of Seb's replacements - in a car to the end of the season, regardless of whether Seb drives or not, and also keep fellow rookie Ed Jones in a car. That means Coyne may have 3 cars on tracks sometime soon.

Roger Penske keeps his word, and keeps JPM in a car....

Announced on Monday, Roger Penske will rejoin the ranks of teams in IMSA SportsCar competition and will put Colombian IndyCar ace Juan Pablo Montoya in the new-for-2018 Acura ARX-05 DPi in the top-performing Prototype class. Juan Pablo will be paired with American Dane Cameron.

Cameron is currently driving for Action Express in the # 31 Whelen Cadillac DPi. He and co-driver Eric Curran took the team's Corvette DP to the Championship in the P class in 2016. This deal puts a great old pro and a terrific young lion in the car for its maiden season.

Penske and Acura are expected to announce a second car and a second pair of drivers for it at or just before the end of the IndyCar season. The rumor is that Helio Castroneves will be offered that car, and BOTH Montoya and Castroneves will also likely be offered stand-alone Indy 500 rides with Team Penske in 2018.

Currently 2nd in the points, can Castroneves keep his IndyCar ride by snagging his first championship?

The 2018 aero kit - Big jumps in safety added in....

In this IndyCar vid, Jon Beekhuis explains how the engineers took advantage of the new design to throw in additional safety for the drivers. Of particular note is the added structure in the side pods, which when compared to the current car are farther out (the car is wider through the driver's hip area) and much beefier, with added crush zones and smarter materials:

Hey! It's been way too long since we saw an episode of the Penske Games...

...wherein Roger Penske reminds all of his drivers that there is no promotion too ridiculous....er, too difficult...for them to avoid.

Here is the Hula Hoop Challenge:

Well, the driver duties are probably worth it...probably.

In IndyCar, the reward for doing a great job is to throw more work at you...

...and that is EXACTLY what will happen to the guys and gals from Harding Racing - including their driver, Colombian/American Gabby Chaves. Gabby and the gang had their IndyCar debut in their brand new chassis at the Indy 500 this year, where they placed P9 from a P25 start. They followed that up with a spectacular run at Texas where they placed P5 - Top Five in only their 2nd race.

Now, the team has announced that they will be the 22nd entrant in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono, this coming weekend.

Gabby and the # 88 for Harding Racing

    Keep up the great MO....!
