Default IndyCars - The off-season: Series news and comment until the March 2014 kick-off...

    ***

For the faithful, it's a long wait until March, but series news will be reported here 'til then, and let's start with the next race - TOMORROW!

No, it's not the big cars. It's GO-KARTS!!

Most of the drivers in IndyCar started out in karts. Many of them STAY SHARP on open-wheel by karting, still. Not the kind at Disneyland, these are very simple but very fast and serious open-wheel racers, capable of over 160 MPH in the superkart class.

Tomorrow, the 26th, New Castle Speedway, in Indiana, will host the inaugural Dan Wheldon Memorial Pro-Am Karting Challenge, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. The event will feature 12 corporate-sponsored teams in a two-hour race at 12:30 p.m.

AMONG the drivers will be IndyCar stars:

    James Hinchcliffe
    JR Hildebrand
    Ed Carpenter
    Simon Pagenaud
    Josef Newgarden
    Tristan Vautier
    Sebastian Saavedra
    Alex Tagliani
    Conor Daly
    Bryan Herta
    Jay Howard
    Sage Karam
    Gabby Chaves
    Zach Veach
Marino Franchitti (substituting for Dario Franchitti)

There is no admission charge. An autograph session begins at 11:45 a.m. - This is a chance to meet your favorite driver in a relaxed setting. GO!!!

On Sunday, the 27th, most of the same drivers will be joined at New Castle by Will Power, Simona De Silvestro, Stefan Wilson and James Davison to run the tenth annual RoboPong 200, an endurance karting event that Wheldon won in 2005, the same year he captured his first Indy 500 and the IndyCar Series championship. That race, also free, begins at noon.

As I stated, most of the current series drivers got their start in karts. Karts - as small as they are - have many of the traits of the highest-performing open-wheel cars. This is a picture of a current driver in their first open-wheel ride, at 6 years old:

Who is this future IndyCar star?

BIG breaking news, today from Harding Racing...Little Al will be in the Indy 500!....

We read this blurb today: Harding Racing is ecstatic and can’t think of a better day to announce Al Unser Jr. will pilot their second entry in the 102nd running of Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. The two-time winner will come out of retirement after a ten-year hiatus from the race to compete in the #8 Harding Racing Chevrolet car alongside Gabby Chaves, driver of the #88 full time VICS entry. This will be Harding Racing’s second Indianapolis 500 and first race as a two-car team.

And then we remembered what day it was....

Juan Pablo Montoya to drive at Le Mans this year...

Announced this week, the Colombian IndyCar ace is embracing his SportsCar world to the hilt, with the news that he will join Pro Mazda alum Will Owen and Hugo de Sadeleer in one of the two Ligier JS P217 Gibson LMP2 machines that will be entered by United Autosports. Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson are set to share the other Ligier alongside a third driver who remains unnamed.

    JPM to Le Mans, 2018

Said Juan Pablo, “I’m very excited about the opportunity to experience Le Mans and I’m looking forward to joining United Autosports after they had such a strong finish at Le Mans last year. I’ve always watched the race so I’m very happy to finally be part of it. Hopefully we can have a shot at a win.”

Will Owen and Hugo de Sadeleer, while the youngsters on the squad, are actually old hands at Le Mans, having made their own debuts on the circuit last year, with Felipe Albuquerque also in their United Autosports # 32 car. The squad finished 5th overall and 4th in class. The same 3 guys went on to be the Vice Champions of the European Le Mans Series in LMP2 class.

Will Owen (right) and Hugo de Sadeleer

With this race Montoya has the chance to WIN the great trifecta or Triple Crown of Motor Racing - The Indy 500, which he WON in 2000 and 2015, the Grand Prix of Monaco, which he WON in 2003, and Le Mans, which he has never tried before. The only guy to ever do the Triple was the late, great Graham Hill, namesake of IndyCar driver Graham Rahal.

ISM Speedway will get a visit from the Texas Tire Monster, it seems...

This weekend the IndyCars will do the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix at ISM Raceway and to make sure the track will provide the best possible show the ISM folks are borrowing a bit of technology from Texas Motor Speedway known as the Texas Tire Monster. The device is pulled slowly around the track and it deposits a layer of tire material on the track surface, helping to create a man-made "groove" that will enable the cars to race all over the track. Tires salvaged from the recent IndyCar test at ISM will be used, so it will be the proper Firestone IndyCar rubber put down.

Here is video of the TTM at work:

Clever! The TTM is scheduled to be used on Thursday and Friday night, in preparation for the Saturday Night race.

Link Theater has opened their doors for a special showing!...

The upcoming Desert Diamond West Valley Casino Phoenix Grand Prix is more than just a race. This Saturday will also be the 25th anniversary of the last IndyCar WIN for one Mario Gabriele Andretti.

In 1993, Mario, driving for Newman Haas, was running 3rd behind a dominant Paul Tracy for Team Penske and Paul's teammate, Emerson Fittipaldi. On lap 161 of 200 Tracy, who was two laps AHEAD of the rest of the field, spun on contact with Jimmy Vasser whom he was passing in Turn 1 and crashed out. Soon after the mess was cleaned up Emmo, now leading, spun into a wall with a flat tire - probably caused by debris from Paul's wreck - and Mario was suddenly leading. He took it to the end, with Raul Boesel in P2 and Jimmy Vasser in P3 for his first IndyCar podium.

The gang at ISM Raceway decided to make Mario the honorary Grand Marshal of Saturday's race and everyone in the business is making the proper big deal of it - including Link Theater, which is holding this special showing of a lot of the heartfelt congrats for the grand old guy. So enjoy! Click on the link below the pic and make sure to turn up the sound:

Rumor du Jour heating up - James Davison will likely be at Indy this year for the 500...

Back in post # 3579 we mentioned that a lot of stuff has floated that Australian James Davison will be an entrant in the 102nd running of the Indy 500, with backing from Jonathan Byrd's Racing, and it's looking even closer to getting confirmed. "Davo" has made three previous starts in the great race and impressed every time, leading at times, despite sometimes being a last-minute entry.

This year he may be in on all the action and all the practice from the start, giving him an even better chance to perform. Byrd's is likely to get AJ Foyt Enterprises to field a 3rd car, alongside team regulars Tony Kanaan and Matheus Leist and that means Davison will be a Chevy guy, this year. James drove a Chevy for KV Racing Technology at Indy in 2015 and Hondas for Dale Coyne in 2016 and 2017.

    James Davison

While primarily known these days as a SportsCar driver, it should be remembered that he was Vice Champion of Star Mazda (Pro Mazda) in 2007 and Vice Champion of Indy Lights in 2009. If Foyt takes him on the crew may be provided by Jonathan Byrd's Racing, with engineering by Foyt's guys.

    Look for an update, soon....

It's official - Zach Veach doesn't seem to change, despite years of growth...

Actually, the Ohio IndyCar driver has changed quite a lot, but this old video from 2011, when "Ziggy" was racing in USF2000 for Andretti Autosport makes one wonder, a bit. Zach was interviewed just before the race at the Milwaukee Mile. He had taken pole and went on to finish P2. He always drove well at Milwaukee, taking a P3 and a WIN there when he was in the Indy Lights. Take a look at then 17-year-old Zach Veach:

Zach had his first oval race as a big car driver at Phoenix, on Saturday night. Starting last on the grid - 23rd - following a qualifying mistake, Zach was an early big climber in the race and the NBC TV crew even took note of it. He would get as high as P9 in the contest, but a bad pit stop had him dropping to P16 by the end. Still, he was quite happy with his overall drive.

    Zach Veach today

While we were watching the Phoenix IndyCar race the Supercars were racing on Tassie....

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship went to the isle of Tasmania this last weekend for the Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint, for season rounds 7 and 8 held at Symmons Plains Raceway.

Round 7 of 50 laps was taken by Jamie Whincup for Triple Eight Race Engineering in the # 1 Holden Commodore ZB from a P2 start. P2 at the end was Jamie's teammate Craig Lowndes in the # 888 from a P4 start and P3 on the podium was James Courtney in the # 25 Holden for Walkinshaw Andretti United from a P5 start.

Jamie Whincup at Symmons Plains Raceway

Whincup's teammate Shane Van Gisbergen started on pole and managed to keep Jamie behind him early, as Whincup also held off Scott McLaughlin for DJR Team Penske who had his Ford Falcon FG/X in P3 at the start. When SVG and McLaughlin made early pit stops Whincup took over and blasted out fast laps that left him in the lead following his own 1st stop, with Lowndes behind him. Lowndes would lose his position back to Van Gisbergen but he would later recoup it, with James Courtney following him through to put SVG back to P4. He would eventually drop to P6 at the end. This was Whincup's 2nd WIN of the season.

Left to right, P1 Jamie Whincup, P2 Craig Lowndes and P3 James Courtney

Season Round 8 of 84 laps saw Craig Lowndes lead the race from pole to the 1st pit stops, where he lost the lead to Scott McLaughlin, who short-filled on his 1st stop from a P4 start. But by lap 29 Craig was by the Ford to reclaim P1. After a later stop Lownde's teammate Jamie Whincup was able to jump over McLaughlin to take P2 but Scott would regain the position on the track and finished ahead of the series defending Champion on the podium. Lowndes' dominating drive was his first WIN since 2016 while this was Whincup's 7th podium of the season. He would take over the points lead on Tassie.

Craig Lowndes back in the WINNER'S circle

P2 finish for Scott McLaughlin in the # 17 Ford Falcon

Our gal in Supercars, IndyCar driver Simona de Silvestro had a fairly static weekend, with a P22 finish from a P24 start in Round 7 and a P21 finish from a P23 start in Round 8. She did have a very good practice over the weekend, bringing the # 78 Team Harvey Norman Nissan Altima L33 to P11 in the P-2 practice session - the best Nissan on track - but it didn't translate to a better qualifying and that's what she's still lacking.

    Simona de Silvestro

Following these two rounds, here are the TOP FIVE in points leaving Tasmania:

    1 - Jamie Whincup 658
    2 - Scott McLaughlin 647
    2 - David Reynolds 647
    4 - James Courtney 624
    5 - Shane Van Gisbergen 618

The next two rounds for the Supercars will be just across the Bass Straight from Tasmania, on the Phillip Island Gran Prix Circuit, just off of Cunningham Bay in Victoria, for the WD-40 Phillip Island 500, April 20-22.

Can we just say that Neil Enerson is making a bid for Heaven in the afterlife...

...by all the good works he's doing in this life. First, Neil - the president of the Lucas Oil School of Racing - initiated a scholarship program with IndyCar driver Pippa Mann, who is also a School instructor. Neil provides the cars for free and Pippa provides the instruction for free for deserving girls who are climbing up into the open-wheel ladder out of the kart ranks, for the most part. Several times a year girls are interviewed and then chosen to receive invaluable seat time and instruction in a formula car.

Next, Neil announced recently that he will partner with John Cummiskey Racing to give the annual champion of the Lucas Oil School Formula Car Championship series a $100,000 scholarship that will be used for a full season of USF2000 with JCR. (see post # 3580)

    Neil Enerson

Now, Neil has announced yet another scholarship and this one will be awarded by a shoot-out. Cooper Tires and the LOS of R will hold a shootout of 30 karters from around the world, over three days, with on-track and off-track activities and training to determine who is the best of the best, with the prize being a fully-funded season in the 2019 Lucas Oil Formula Car Championship, valued at $75,000. It shall be called the Cooper Tires Karting Scholarship Shoot-out, to be held December 12-14, 2018 at Sebring International Raceway.

With this the Lucas Oil School has 'em covered coming out of karting and then coming out of the Lucas Oil Formula Car Championship and into USF2000 - a clear path to the Mazda Road to Indy, which it itself a clear path to IndyCars. We'll keep out eyes on this shoot-out. Thank you, Neil and Cooper Tires!

He's IN!...JR Hildebrand will drive for Deyer & Reinbold Racing in the 102nd running of the Indy 500 in 2018...

The California native was rumored for quite a while now to be the other driver for the two-car effort that Dennis Reinbold promised for this year's Indy 500, following the March announcement that Sage Karam was in for D & RR. Today JR made the grade.

    JR Hildebrand

JR becomes the 35th CONFIRMED entry in the 500 this year, which means if tradition holds, there will be some bumping on the first day of qualifying - Saturday, Bump Day. His record at Indy is quite good, always capable of running up front. He was famously leading the race in his rookie attempt to win it for Panther Racing, when to avoid another car, he brushed the wall in Turn 4 on the final lap, allowing Den Wheldon to WIN the race for Bryan Herta, while JR had to settle for P2. This will be his 8th attempt at an Indy 500.

Dennis Reinbold made it clear months ago that he wanted to WIN this year and was staffing his squad with that in mind, as both Karam and Hildebrand are hungry and both have shown very well at Indy in the past. JR's sponsors will be Salesforce for the # 66 Chevrolet-powered car.

    JR's ride this May

Making this all the sweeter is the fact that Dreyer and Reinbold was JR's first big car ride, back in 2010, so this is a coming home thing.

IMSA will be racing at Long Beach this weekend...

As they come in to support the IndyCar race weekend, with an all-pro show, as the P class and the GTLM class only will race, leaving the GTD class guys home. While all the current IndyCar guys will be racing in their own series, a number of former (some quite recent) IndyCar guys will be competing for IMSA. A few might and one WILL end up at Indianapolis for the 500, too. Let's see who will be in a SportsCar this weekend:

P class IndyCar driver Juan Pablo Montoya will join former P-class champion Dane Cameron in the # 6 Acura ARX-05 DPi for Acura Team Penske.

    Juan Pablo Montoya

    - IndyCar driver Helio Castroneves and former P-class champion Ricky Taylor will be in the # 7 Acura ARX-05 DPi for Acura Team Penske. Helio WILL BE at both the Indianapolis Grand Prix and the Indy 500 for Team Penske, this year.

    Helio Castroneves

    - Pro Mazda alum Pipo Derani will co-drive the # 22 Nissan DPi for Extreme Speed Motorsports with Johannes van Overbeek. Pipo has made it clear he will be speaking with IndyCar team owners, trying to get some attention from them, while at Long Beach. He wants to be in IndyCar.

    Luis "Pipo" Derani

    - Indy Lights driver James French and Kyle Masson will co-drive the # 38 ORECA LMP2 for Performance Tech.

    James French

    - IndyCar driver Sebastian Saavedra and former Lights driver Gustavo Yacaman are the series regulars in the # 52 Ligier JS P2 for AFS / PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports. Sebastian has not ruled out an Indy 500 effort with AFS for 2018.

Sebastian Saavedra (left) and Gustavo Yacaman

    - Former USF2000 driver Robert Alon is a regular series driver with Simon Trummer in the # 85 ORECA LMP2 for JDC-Miller Motorsports.

    Robert Alon

GTLM class - Pro Mazda alum Connor De Phillippi is a regular in the # 25 BMW M8 GTLM for BMW Team Rahal Letterman Lanigan along with Brit Alexander Sims.

    Connor de Phillippi

    - Former IndyCar driver and Aussie Ryan Briscoe and Brit Richard Westbrook will be at Long Beach in the # 67 Ford GT for Ford Chip Ganassi.

    Ryan Briscoe

Watch for updates of all these guys and their adventures in the Long Beach Grand Prix thread...

He's IN!...James Davison will be an entrant in the 102nd running of the Indy 500...

The rumor in post # 3591 has been solidly CONFIRMED today as Australian James Davison will be an AJ Foyt driver for his fourth assault on the Indy 500. The 3rd Foyt entry - alongside team regulars Tony Kanaan and Matheus Leist - is being made possible by the backing of David Byrd of Jonathan Byrd's Racing, Brian Belardi of Belardi Racing and Pennsylvania businessman Brad Hollinger, who is part owner of the Williams Formula One team. The team is officially AJ Foyt Racing with Byrd-Hollinger-Belardi.

The team - left to right, Brian Belardi, James Davison, Larry Foyt and David Byrd

Setting the whole thing in motion was David Byrd, who was so impressed with Davison's drive in the 2017 Indy 500 that he sought him out in the paddock after the race and began to work on this deal. Brian Belardi, whose Indy Lights team has WON two Freedom 100s at the Speedway, has wanted to get involved in the big cars in some way and this is the way.

Veteran team manager Steve Moore has assembled a crew , including engineer Kyle Brannan. Both worked with Davison at KV Racing in 2014 in his first try at the 500. AJ Foyt Racing is providing the equipment. This may be the best-prepared car that Davison has ever had - a true Speedway car that was massaged from the start to run at Indy.

Steve Moore in charge on the floor, (left) Kyle Brannan in the booth

Said James, “I've always gone into the event with one, two days' practice and just focused on what I need to do, drawing off my experience data bank from driving other cars or Indy Lights.

“So now, I think what's going to help is probably getting more out of qualifying this time. Again, you really need to make the race, not just think about your start position this year, and spending more time with an engineer to get the balance right in race trim as well, I think is where it's really going to pay dividends.”

Davison's entry, the # 33 Chevrolet, brings the confirmed car count to 36. We love it!

Following the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach the state of "Rookie of the Year" looks like this...

There are a LOT of rookies this season, and unlike season's past, where there was only one rookie who was immediately crowned "Rookie of the Year" by default, we have a real contest on our hands, this year. After three races, these are the TOP FIVE rookies with their current points:

1 - Robert Wickens, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, 65

    2 - Zach Veach, Andretti Autisport, 60

3 - Matheus Leist, AJ Foyt Enterprises, 33

4 - Jack Harvey, Michael Shank Racing, 25

    5 - Kyle Kaiser, Juncos Racing, 23

    Notable:

    - Other series rookies include Rene Binder for Juncos Racing, Jordan King for Ed Carpenter Racing and Zachary Claman DeMelo and Pietro Fittipaldi, both for Dale Coyne Racing.

    - Of the 9 rookies, only Wickens, Veach and Leist are full timers who will contest every one of the 17 scheduled races, making them the only real possible RotY candidates.

    - Other races may be added for the other rookies but as of now, Rene will do 6 races, Jordan will do 11 races, Zachary will do 10 races, Pietro will do 7 races, Jack will do 6 races and Kyle will do 4 races, effectively taking them all out of the chance to be RotY.

    - As of now Robert Wickens, Zach Veach, Matheus Leist, Jack Harvey, Kyle Kaiser and Pietro Fittipaldi will make the Indy 500, while Zachary Claman DeMelo, Jordan King and Rene Binder will not.

    - Juan Pablo Montoya is the only modern-era rookie to WIN the Indy 500, though JR Hildebrand was 1 corner away from doing it when he hit the Turn 4 wall on the final lap and came in P2 instead.

Juan Pablo Montoya (left) and JR Hildebrand prove rookies should dream big...it's possible

Igor Fraga is making a name for himself, here and in Mexico...

The young Brazilian rookie for Exclusive Autosport in USF2000 took a P8 in his debut race at St. Pete and a P2 in the 2nd race at St. Pete, this last March. Since then he has been waiting for USF2000 to resume racing but he hasn't been sitting on his laurels for the St. Pete podium. Instead, he has continued to contest the 2017-2018 season of FIA Formula 4 Nacam in Mexico, which he was doing before the USF2000 season started. This last weekend Igor pulled down two more WINS and a P2 at San Luís Potosí, adding to the 7 WINS he already had in the bank.

Fraga is battling Moises de la Vara for the FIA F4 Nacam title. Moises is a USF2000 alum, having driven for DEForce Racing in 2017, and he currently drives for DEForce Racing's Mexican team, Martiga EG. There are three races left to go to decide the championship.

Igor will be driving for Exclusive Autosport at the Indianapolis road course for USF2000 season rounds 3 & 4, this coming May 10-12. He is currently 3rd in the points. Good luck on that F4 title hunt, Igor!
