In my neck of the woods, the locals refer to it as the invasion of the pumpkin army.

I must confess that on my way down to Houston yesterday I stopped on US 259 at the Ouachita National Forest.

I got out and walked past the shutdown welcome center into the woods.

    Can't shut me out.

I should note that we also have extended archery, muzzle loader and flintlock seasons. We are allowed to take multiple antlerless deer during the year, but only one antlered deer. My daughter goes out during the archery season to take antlerless deer and I go out during muzzle loader season to do the same.

My deer are trained and spooky.

I will look into it, but in my 'climes it is a short-lived issue.

Of all sensory things, I got a great olfactory sense. DEET stinks like gasoline.

    The crossbow market is exploding.

They have their uses but generally I dislike them. I was in a local gun/hunting/bow/... general store the other day and saw a guy buying a low power and low priced crossbow. He hit a target at about 3 yards and asked about the lethal range of the weapon. The stressed store worker said, keep it to 20 yards.

This was 2 days before local season opening.

I shoot at least 500 arrows in prep for the season, varying range, stance, elevation...

Crossbows make something complex seem simple.

Seems there is a lot of that going around.

Last weekend, I mowed my hunting camp for the last time, pulled 3 tree stumps out of the property, cleaned all the bugs out of the camper. I'm going up Saturday to scout and test the battery life on my now Solar Powered camper. Electric company wanted $15,000 to get power to the property. I elected to stay off the grid. Got my hands on some solar panels, got them placed on the roof and have a full charge.

By my calculations, I should have enough juice to power my CPAP for an overnight stay and then some. We shall see. I gotta have the CPAP. I feel like Bane every time I put on the mask, but I sleep like a baby with that thing.

So, to answer the question, I'm quite eager to put a couple of deer down.

When I got married over 30 years ago, my wife married a die hard hunter. She became a nurse, was a retired gymnast and breathed health. Opposites attract...and we found common ground when she said....you can have every animal in the forest but leave the deer alone. Now, I hunt most everything except big game and she keeps my bird dog in great health. Yep....opposites surely attract. Isn't our Lord an awesome God?

Only if the animals have guns.

That'd be awesome if each animal you killed came with a gun! What an incentive to kill more animals that would be.
