For guys it probably was pretty sweet.

You know, I learned that women in ancient Egypt actually had more rights than an American woman in 1890 did. A lot more. Freaky.

There was a story about a male anthropologist who visited some tribe in the middle of no-where and lamented the powerlessness of the women and such.

A female anthropologist later visited, who was able to much more freely communicate with the women. Turned out they ran the show, and any men who got out of line got beaten half to death with a ceremonial whomping club.

Just cuz 'western civilization' was (at least publicly) male dominated doesn't mean it was the norm by any means.

Though, granted, women tend to get a bit of raw deal during pretty much every war throughout history.

Seems like it would just be easier to let teh gheyz have civil marriage and then your church can decide who they want to marry.

Not on this issue imo. Young people are growing up with openly gay friends and openly gay celebrities etc. They don't even understand why it's an issue anymore, and that is costing Republicans/conservatives hugely in the long term.

The problem politically is once any Conservative who has, in the past, spoke out against gay marriage, actually declared support of gay marriage he is then called a flip-flopper. It's the old catch 22. You want them to accept it, but when they do, they get ridiculed for it.
