Default Any Vets seen this fad?

A couple of years ago I met the finest man. It was at a funeral of my sister in law's.

My brother & sister in law have probably 200 friends that they've ridden with for some years now. Of course she passed away 2 years ago tho.

Anyway, this biker has got to be the friendliest & most warm man we've met in a while. He was also black. All others are white.

A couple of months ago this fine man got sick all of a sudden & died from a heart attack.

My niece told me that this friend was also saying "I don't think I have any real friends who like me".

At his Memorial there were around 200 bikers that attending the service.

Anyway, when I met this man I noticed that he was wearing his military "dog tags" over his shirt & they were positioned between his motor cycle jacket's opening. Looked good!

So I asked my new friend why? He said that he & some other Vietnam Vets decided to wear their dog tags again, sometimes out in the open, to celebrate their service & love for America.

Of course it wouldn't look very good outside dress clothing, but with a leather jacket or casual it looks good.

Always a shame to loose such a friendly and warm black man. May he rest in peace.

If wearing your dog tags makes one feel connected to others in a positive way, more power to them.

I didn't see that side of it, but maybe. Anytime I see anyone who loves all, I appreciate them.

BTW, I didn't start this thread because my friend was black, but because he started a military fad that I appreciate.

I gave my dogtags to the woman who became my wife. She has them stashed somewhere. I had to tell her the significance of the scene in "Saving Private Ryan" where they were getting dirty looks when shuffling through the tags of lost paratroopers.

My brother in law was shot & killed some years ago. After my wife & her sister almost went nuts, we settled down.

He was a Paratrooper for sure in the Vietnam era. Thanks for your service. I served in Vietnam, but not in a Trooper type service.

BTW, I'm glad you mentioned my intent of this thread. You can purchase new tags at the Army Navy stores & other places if you want.

I still have mine & am proud to wear them with certain attire, as my friend did.

I have my friends picture on my computer with all my other pictures that I love. I may post it in this thread if enough heroes post to it.

Right back at ya, service wise. I am a bit young for the Southeast Asia Games, but served with several in my platoon who did. We had a few dust ups we were involved in, Grenada being the most popular, and another that remains classified.

I like the dog tag thing.

I don't like the ones who are constantly calling the news to show up and film their airport reunions with wives or the surprise at the kids school. When I came home from a long abscence, the last thing I wanted was a bunch of cameras around to ruin our special moment. Attention is like crack and everybody seems to crave it.

Iunno. I might be in the minority on this one. When I see tags being worn outside the shirt, I just think "Hollywood." It just comes off as showy to me. Not that I see anything wrong with it, it's just not a preference of mine. If you're showing up to support a fallen brother, you can wear your tags however you want.

My best bud was killed back in '06. His mother gave me his tag. I gave her one of mine in return. Part of me died with him and if I coulda buried him with it, I would've. But I have his next to my second tag on my chain. There have been a few times I've thought of wearing them or knotting my chain to my backpack or something, but I never did and highly doubt I ever will.
No, I won't take your hand and marry the state.

I kind of have to agree, to a point. When I see the tags worn outside a **** or the "Vet hats" (especially when people pin their old rank on there) it sort of makes me think they're doing it to show off a bit.

However, with the dog tags, whenever I have to wear them (and I only do when I have to) I use the plastic sleeve over the chain as it gets caught in my chest hair and is really aggravating. If I could wear them outside the shirt, I would.

Was this gentleman nicknamed Dozer? If it was Dozer, he was a class act.
