And while every veteran deserves to be honored for serving this nation the way they do, we don't need to have constant whining about someone getting a ship named for them just because they weren't someone you would have chosen.
    How does she deserve it?

That would be incredibly hurtful, not that the whiners who don't want Gabby to have her ship can possibly think what that would be like if it were them. Think about that for a while and come back when you have something intelligent to say.
Put yourself in the shoes of the families of brave young warriors who paid the ultimate price when they see a ship being named after a congress critter just simply for political reasons. Please tell me that "Gabby" is more deserving than a brave hero that paid the ultimate price for their country.

I think it's rather apparent you're out of your league considering this is a veteran's thread. I'm sure you could start a celebrity worshiping thread in General Interest.

Even if there is a new Secretary of the Navy before this ship is done, there is NO WAY anyone is going to be DISGUSTING enough to even think of screwing Gabby out of this honor. I know those who are complaining would love for that to happen, but complaining will get the complainers NOWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now when for the love of God are they going to find something else to complain about and give it a rest??????????????????
How are you so sure this WILL HAPPEN? The Navy has cancelled ships before. There was originally suppose to have been 6 Iowa Class battleships but the last two were cancelled, USS Kentucky and USS Illinois. And both were in the construction phase.

He'd end up with three! -- But wait, didn't he throw them away? Wouldn't that change things?

Actually Reagan did get his 600 Ship Navy. The US Navy had 613 ships in commission at one time before the draw down.

Now it's less than half of that, but the op tempo hasn't decreased. In fact its gone up!!!

Not sure exactly where the "Ship Battle Forces" number peaked, but the highest year end figure (during the Reagan years) was 594. It probably went over 600 at some point, but that would likely have been very briefly.

Interesting to note that, as of April 25, 2012, the "Ship Battle Forces" number is 283, with 251 being commissioned ships of the line. It bottomed out at 278 in 2007.

The current schedule of acquisition suggests that we have bottomed out and the number will stay generally in the 280 range over the next decade.
