Evidently some deadbeat gave her creditors our phone number at some point and then stopped paying her bills. My wife and I would get about 5-6 calls a week regarding this lady, most of them during the day while we were at work thankfully. One company called back 4 times after I had explained to them that we had had our phone number for 5 years and at no time had anybody by the name of Shirley lived there and that she had obviously given them a bad phone number on purpose as several other companies were calling as well. The last time they called I very very rudely explained it once again and told the guy that the next time his companies name appeared on my caller ID I was going to blow an air horn into the phone no questions asked. We haven't heard from them in about a year.

We're on the "do not" call list, and so was the company I worked for. These people still call. When I told one that we were on the list and she was violating the law, she gave me a smart answer that it didn't apply to them! Then she really started calling a lot for a couple of weeks. There is no company name or number which shows up on caller ID, so it is next to impossible to report. Now we just don't answer calls that show "unknown".

A friend of mine (forgive me if I have told this story before) kept getting a phone call from a credit card company for a card they had in her husband's name. They were trying to sell the out-of-work insurance. She told them that they didn't want it, but they insisted on speaking with the hubby. She informed them that she paid the bills and he didn't want any part of it. Well, they kept calling asking for the hubby. One day she was fed up with it, the company called, she recognized the number and the voice of the lady, and when the woman asked for her husband by name, my friend yelled into the phone, "Are you the tramp that has been sleeping with my husband?!". The lady hung up and they never called back again.

The most annoying messages for me are the ones that go:
"It is urgent to contact us about your outstanding credit card balances and lowering your interest rates. There is no problem with your accounts right now but it is urgent that you contact us."
I don't do credit card balances. I don't owe a dime on any credit card for anything. I get the bill and pay it off, in full, immediately. I'm not some fool who lives beyond his means.
I get the warranty calls too. My 2008 Ford F-150 had a 75,000 mile extended warranty on it bought and paid for (as is the truck) before I drove it home. I wrote a check for it. It's mine free and clear. Apparently these warranty goons are just fishing through vehicle registrations or something because they're pretty stupid calling me hoping for my business.
Then there are the offers to make my mortgage company re-negotiate. I've never missed a mortgage payment, never had any issue coming up with the money for a mortgage payment and since I wasn't crazy enough to buy anything other than a fixed-rate contract I'm not in any sort of danger of major payment increases.
I don't want to renegotiate. That's how you wind up in those weird balloon payment adjustable rate nightmares that suck to be in now. I got a good enough deal that no loan shark is going to snap me up unawares.
I love me some Caller ID. I don't even talk to these people. They're not even talking to me. It's a machine talking to a machine. It's pathetic and a waste.

That's the same stupid call we have been getting! I have also been getting calls 3 or 4 times a week from our mortgage company. I have told them a hundred times that we do not wish to refinance. Just for grins and giggles, I wasted their time the other day. I let her go through all the figuring and guess what?! They cannot lower our payments with a refinance, because we have a great fixed rate. The only way it could be lowered is with an adjustable. I asked her just how stupid did they think we were and hung up.

I got the gist of one of those bandits when they gave me a statistic that most people don't stay in their homes for more than five years. So balloon payments don't matter because you'll move before it happens.
That's not my style. I actually bought my house to buy the house. It's not an investment, it's not a so-called 'starter home', it's where I intend to live for a very, very long time and I fully intend to have a mortgage-burning party. I'm not going to retire in debt. I'm not actually stupid enough to mix fixed income and debt load. That's a sinking ship with no lifeboats.
I don't fit the five-year model and I'm stubborn, not adjustable.

In my times and travels, I have met men and women of many professions and creeds, but never, ever have I met anyone who admitted to being a telemarketer.
I've met pilots, I've met doctors, lawyers, politicians and maids, none of them ashamed of what they do but nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever admitted to my face that they're a spammer, telemarketer or door-to-door salesman.
It's like they're ashamed of what they do and the suffering they inflict on others. They know what they do is wrong and despicable but they do it anyway.
If we could identify these villains and post their home phone numbers so that millions of victimized Americans could repay these bastards the favor, we could end telemarketing overnight.

The way I understand it is that there is a loophole in the "do not call" list that exempts companies that you have done business with from the fines and penalties. This is the very reason that I never give my phone number out to companies that have no need for it, no matter how annoying the sales clerk is. My wife gave it to a sales clerk at a dept store because they said they didn't use the phone number to call people but only for market research. It took us 3 months to get the automated calls stopped as it was a blatant lie. You might still be able to get somewhere by reporting it to your phone company as harrasing though.
I hate to hear the phone ring very much so I usually pick it up and have a little fun at their expense.

Yeah, I have said some things that would have got me in trouble....
Peeved at Auto-Warranty Calls, a Web Posse Strikes Back
Millions of Americans have gotten the call.
"This is the second notice that the factory warranty on your vehicle is about to expire," says the recorded voice at the other end of the line. Most people hang up. The machine calls again later.
Michael Silveira decided to strike back. The 22-year-old laboratory technician, who doesn't own a car, says he was getting unsolicited sales pitches as often as twice a day on his cellphone.
Millions of Americans receive calls with pitches for extended auto warranties. Lawsuits are pending but one Internet community already took matters into their own hands, Geoffrey Fowler reports.
So last week, Mr. Silveira began calling back an auto-warranty company that has become the focus of an Internet crusade. He left it voice-mail messages that contained nothing but a recording of Rick Astley's 1987 hit song "Never Gonna Give You Up."

"I'm looking at your file and we can cut your credit card debt in half!"
My credit card debt is ZERO. Cutting my credit card debt to half of ZERO is still ZERO and if you're looking at my file and can't see that then you're an idiot not even worth the talking to.
"The county you live in has been selected for a bailout mortgage renegotiation program. Press "1" now to speak to a bailout specialist!"
Calling from Kentucky, the idiots don't even know the name of the county I live in (Maricopa County, Arizona, 4th largest county in the USA) and they're assuming I've got mortgage troubles? They're fishing.
I don't even LIKE the bailout scam. I'm a Republican. Throw those union goons out on their greedy asses. I didn't see the UAW offer to help Detroit any in a pinch.
Spam calls are just their machines meeting my machine. I'm never going to return their calls and they're never going to get through to me. It's just costing them money and hopefully it will cost them enough money that they'll go bankrupt and stop bugging everybody they get a phone number for.

Ya gotta.....LOVE it when these peeps get a dose of their own medicine....
The recipient of their efforts is David Tabb, the 42-year-old president of Auto One, an Irvine, Calif., warranty company with 60 employees. He says Reddit users overloaded his phone lines with computerized calls, changed voice-mail greetings on his company's system, and even threatened arson. People have been conspicuously honking outside his home, he says. To cope, he redirected some of the numbers that activists had been calling.
Connecticut's attorney general, Richard Blumenthal, who because of complaints has been looking into the marketing practices of Auto One and other warranty marketers for more than a year, warns that consumers should "avoid breaking the law simply for revenge."
But Mr. Blumenthal, who has received warranty-expiration calls several times himself, is sympathetic to the vigilantes. "The telemarketers would be on very shaky ground making a complaint about the use of practices directed against them that they use on consumers," he says.

I can't even pick up my phone anymore, I have to let the message machine screen all calls.
I won't join the "Do Not Call" registry because I figure that's a treasure trove of numbers just one "Freedom Of Information Act" request away from being sold as a list of "government verified numbers".
There's no depth of sleaze to which these telemarketing scum won't stoop to. They interrupt people's lives, they sell worthless crap that doesn't even work (good luck getting Joe's Auto Warranty Warehouse papers honored) and they're stealing the use of personal electronics with every phone call they make. I've got 8 telephones in my house, they cost easily over $1000 and did these creeps pay a dime for their use? NO?? THEN WHY ARE THEY USING THEM?? They're THIEVES! Theft by conversion. Using MY STUFF that I PAID FOR for THEIR BUSINESS is criminal in act and intent.
I'm not going to buy from them. They started the business relationship by stealing from me in bad faith. I'm not doing business with a telemarketer. EVER.

I love solicitation calls!
Some stories I've told them:
1. Yeah I have a major debt I need you to help me pay off. You see, I sold my soul to the devil to win a battle of the bands contest but I lost and I want you to pay him off so I can keep my soul.
2. I owe money to "these guys" for a little gambling problem I have. They have kidnapped my kids and will hurt them if I don't pay them off. Can you help me to pay them off?
3. I have $175,000 in credit card debt that my wife took out in my name to buy gifts for the man she is having an affair with. I got fired because I have been crying too much at work and now I am a male prostitute in order to make ends meet. They hang up when I start sobbing about how dirty I feel.
4. Some times I ask "Are you wearing pants?" and when they reply "Umm, yes" I ask, "Will you take them off?" ...click...
Of course this all comes after my polite requests to be removed from their databases.

I've been getting calls from a company wanting to buy my time share that I do not own now, or will own in the future. At first, I would just hang up. Then I started yelling. Next time, they're getting the air horn. I get 5 -7 of these calls per week, I can't wait 'til the next one! Got a brand new air horn just waitin'.
Sell them a time share.
Have them draw up paper work and fax it to you. You can stretch it out for a long time and cost them a lot of money. See how may hoops they will jump through.

The first time I tried that I was on the road and asked for a call back number so I could give them my info, he hung up.
Tonight, we got as far as a supervisor will call me tomorrow...He/she will be introduced to my air horn. I am fed up with them.

Next time y'all get a call about a car warranty, act all interested and ask them if it covers blood stains and other bodily fluids. How about accidental damage to the upholstery while sawing through limbs?
Next call, ask if they cover chemical damage while cooking up a batch of meth.

When they call me, I ask them if they are talking about the Aston Martin or the Mercedes*. :D
They usually get all excited say the Aston Martin, but then I ask them if they are sure... its only 5 months old. I ask if they can tell me the VIN number just to check.
Of course, they can't... so I then proceed to chew them a new ******* for being terrible at their jobs. I ask them if they are proud of being a sub par telemarketer, if their parents are proud of what they've done with their lives, and what they think they contribute to society, etc etc.
I have no sympathy for telemarketers. Especially those who work for quasi-legal scummy companies that call people on the do not call list.
*for those of you playing along at home, I don't own either or those cars.

I don't normally cheer on a Liberal Senator, but I am pulling for Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY). He is authoring a Bill to try and do something about stopping robo-calls.
Go Chuck! I'm getting sick of these "this is the last time you can [whatever they're trying to sell you or scam you for].

I hate those calls.
One time when I was board I answered, told the telemarketer the year of my truck and he said, "Your car is older than I am." A relative of mine has an old jeep willey, WWII vintage. I need to get the info on that for the next time I get board and answer. After that I'll go with a Sherman or something. Lets see them offer warranties on those.

I have been getting phone calls about lowing my credit card interest rates, but they are not from my credit card company. Anyone else?
I just demand the company name and address pointing out that I do not have any credit cards due to identity theft and a lawyer will be paying them a visit to get copies of their files. Any opposition can be concidered obstruction of justice or aiding and betting criminal activity. I haven't received any more credit card calls since I said it a year ago.

Other than not answering I like my landord's method.
"Can you hold a minute?" Then set the phone down.
Of course if you really want to be ****ed off have someone call you and ask you to hold.
**** No! You do not call me and put me on hold! Sheesh!

I screen my home phone anyway, so when I hear the message I look over at my wife and say "damn...there goes our ____th last chance to sign up for that warranty"
