Ok, some ground rules

1) If you don't know what Hockeytown is, go away, your not wanted here until you pass Hockey 101.

2) abusive talk about Hockeytown will not be tolerated. Fans of Hockeytown don't fight fair. :D

I am so looking forward to the season starting. First game is Thurday. I want to see how the team works together with new faces, and all. There are bound to be some unfamilar lines. The seven Swedes are back. We not a Swedish goaltender. :D

Also I can't wait to see the retirement ceremony for Stevie Y number. FSN better make an event out of it. It will be crazy.

Stevie Y, isn't going anywhere. He couldn't play forever but as a VP he will always be around, no need to miss him and seeing his number hand from the rafters will always be a reminder of what he has done for Detroit and Detroit's appreciation for him.

I started listening to Hockey on WJR when he got drafted. I had no idea baout Hockey. It took me a while to understand the rules. It wasn't on TV much then. My Dad took me to some minor league games in Windsor (they were really cheap) and took me to one game at Joe. I hope FSN shows the whole thing. He is loved in Detroit more than any other athlete. There was a time when most thought that no one could be more loved than Al Kaline, but that thought has long sence passed. You should have seen me where there were the trade rummors reguarding him. I was a basketcase. I kept saying that they better not trade him. He basically brought hockey back in Detroit, sure it was here, but we had been losing for so long that no body seemed to care. Notice that ever since the trade rumors passed, he always had a no trade clause in his contract.

Yes I noticed that lol!!!

Now as much as it will pain me to say this becasue I love Maltby, but if he doesn't step it up this season...it might be time for him to go. What do you think?

I disagree. He more of a grinder than a scorer, plus he is crucial to our penalty kill unit. I don't think that Draper would have had that brakout season he did a few years ago without Maltby. He doesn't put up the stats, but he's crucial to the line that he and Draper are on. Of course there are salary cap issues and it might come to the point where the money spent on him could be better used.

My sister is so evil  She lives just outside of DC and know someone with season tickets near the blue line (3 rows back) so she buys the tickets from him whenever the wings are in town. After the Capitals trade Lang to Detroit for a couple of minor league prospects we went out and order a Lang Red Wing Sweater to were to the Wings-Caps games, usually two games a year are there. :)) :)) :))

Well last season, most analysts, incluing Barry Melrose and that Matby and Draper when play together on the penalty kill are the best there is right now and possibly the best in the last decade. Plus he's a great line mate for Draper. I don't seem him going any where. Of course I have said that again and again with the Wings and been wrong.

It's also woth mentioning that the Wings don't need more up and coming scores. We are solid in the department. We need more grinders and defensive minded offensive players. That what wins games in the playoffs. The lack of grinding and checking by our offensive players is why we usually exit earlier than we should.

We don't get cable, but I try to stay in touch.
(After we waited in line 2 1/2 hours to see the Cup. My toddler touched it!!!I got a picture :) and the security guards went nuts.) A few years later, we planned our family vacation to see them rout the Blues. Way awesome! How did they get so many hockey greats on one team....
Anyway, I thought we heard a rumor that they traded Shanahan....that could not be possible.....could it?

They didn't trade him, he decided not to renew his contract. When Yzerman retired he thought it best for him to move on and pass the torch to the younger players on the team.

They had so many greats on the team cause Illitch wasn't afraid to open us his checkbook unlike other owners. Also because it's a great Hockey city and one of the so called "original six" is also a big draw for players. With the salary cap that will change somewhat, we won't have as many great players, but we will still be very competitve and one of the elite teams in the league for many years to come. Also we have a great farm system. As the olders ones move on or retire there is plenty of young blood to step in.

Usually, I'm on some kind of political tear or another....too busy to stop and look for the Zamboni. lol:

I WANNA DRIVE THE ZAMBONI
The Zambonis

Well I went down to my local arena.
I asked to see the manager man.
He came from his office and said, "Son can I help you?"
I looked at him and said, "Yes you can."

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

Since I was young it's been my dream
to drive that there zamboni machine.
I'd get that ice just as slick as could be,
and all the kids would look up to me.

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

The manager said, "Son, I know it looks keen,
but that right there is one expensive machine.
And we've got Smokey who's been driving for years."
About that time, I broke down in tears.

'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
'Cause I wanna drive the zamboni.
I wanna drive the zamboni.
(Yes I do.)

It's kinda up for grabs. Hasek and Osgood are back. Legace is gone, which is a shame cause I liked him. Then there is Joey MacDonald who is a minor league prospect who did really well last year in Grand Rapids. For now he is on the roster, they don't want to send him back to Grand Rapids cause that would mean that he would have to clear waivers and they think some other team would pick him up.

I took the time to sing it!!!! Feeling ok now.
Dad tells of when they had to "make the'r own rink", darn it! Then they had to shovel off all the snow for the scrimmages. Of course, there are no line changes in the neighborhood, so you play with whatever you broke!!!
The Techie of mine tells of punching holes in a keg, after it's empty of course, and refilled with water, to resurface the college ice......ah memories

I hope he doesn't consider pulling a Mario Lemieux and un-retiring in mid season or even a year or two from now....he has nothing left to prove.

That's not going to happen. This decision has been coming for several years. He keeps signing one year contracts and after the year is over he wrestling with the decision whether to retire or not. He will not come back to playing on the ice.

It's also worth mention that Steve Y spent a lot of time last season on the third line with Draper and Maltby. Why would one of the greatest players ever come back to play on the third line, it might even be the 4th line.

I hope he takes the ice in the alumni game though.

That would absolutely never happen. Stevie Y has proved everything there was to prove and he left under his own terms. You couldn't ask for anything more. Mario's was a different case; illnesses forced him into retirement WAY too early. He came back for a couple of reasons; the team needed his leadership and skill. He also wanted to finish what he'd started, a hugely successful hockey career. Both men went out the same way the played, with style and grace. Bravo to them.

First, It will juist be something that I and the rest of Hockeytown will have to get use to. Second, The Vancover captain wears #19 and perhaps the greatest player ever to wear #19 for any hockey team droped the puck.

I hope so. Rasheed will probally do ok at Center, McDyess will then become a starter. I think our bench is weak expecially up front, the bachcourt bench looks ok. Maybe Jason Maxiell will step up. When we drafted him I kept hearing that he can playing stingy Ben Wallace type defence, but I didn't see much out of him last year. I am still optimistic. I have no doubts that we will win our division. I think it will come down to us and Miami again the Conference finals, I think we still need another piece or two to win another champiosnhsip, though.

Well Stevie being the generous man that he is said that the legend of him being such a great leader is overblown and exaggerated. The fans that love him so much didn't want to hear that.

Well, the Peter the Great experiment failed miserably. As much as I enjoyed watching him play, he just couldn't stay on the ice long enough to be a factor. I was happy/sad to see him go. Luckily we got a very promising looking young gun and some draft picks. We already have a pretty solid core team. I see us back in the playoffs in no more than two years.

If you REALLY want to get me fired up, all you have to do is mention the name of he who's name shall not be spoken.

Except for him, I really did like those years. I've always been a huge fan of John Leclair. Mark Recci was another who was tough as nails and did whatever it took to win. When your Wings swept them I was never so mad at a coach in my entire life. I usually don't blame a head coach for a series loss, but that one was all on the coach. They had played a specific style of hockey through the entire regular season and through the playoffs. It had obviously been very successful for them. So, when it's the Stanley Cup Finals, what did the coach decide to do? Yeah, he decided to play a COMPLETELY different style of hockey. He was lucky he got fired. If he'd spent another minute if Philly somebody would have killed him.

Even thought the Wings lost I had a great time. It was a once in a lifetime experience. The tickets that my uncle game me were to an executive suite. The only problem is that with all the banners hanging from the rafters I was unable to see Yzerman's banner from where their suite was located. At the end of the game my Aunt and Uncle bought me a mini Yzerman banner like the one hanging from the rafter and a book simply called "19". It's all about Yzerman. It is only sold at Joe Louis Arena and only 30,000 copies were printed and no more will be printed. I got copy #17,084. It's awesome. Before the game started I got a program. Part of it is dedicated to Yzerman's retirement party and they have the entire transcript from Yerman's speech. It was a once in a life time experience. I feel so spoiled. :D

Oh and ski, they told me something else, but I don't want to make you to envious.

That link takes you to the book I was talking about. I think that is the same book that I was talking about. The title is the same, but the one I got is 186 pages and not 192 pages.

Ski, I'd suggest that you go down to Hockeytown Cafe or Hockeytown Authentics, or call that number before they run out. Its worth the price. The last page in the book is an adorable pic of Stevie and his three daughters.

You will probably pay top dollar anywhere for it since there will only be limited quantities. I got it for $20.00. According to the people I talked to there is only going to be one printing of 30,000 copies and once they are sold out thats it. Of course he also said that they are only sold at Joe Louis so there is the distinct possibility that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I liked him to, he never quite came through like he wanted him to. That probably is because we are so deep that he didn't get enough playing time. I wish him the best. He is going to Chicago we'll see still see him often enough. I don't know much about this Caldwell guy, maybe be can help us out. Since he was a Flyer maybe AlBob can tell us about him.

Yes...I need ALBOB to shed some light on this guy.

It was a style that never quite fit in Philadelphia. He scored only nine goals and had 21 points in 59 games after having a career year in Chicago last season. Calder had 26 goals and 33 assists in 79 regular-season games for the Blackhawks last season, leading the team in goals, assists, points and game-winning goals.

Calder's play has improved of late, and Red Wings coach Mike Bab**** said he brings the forechecking and grit his team needs.

"He's had a tough season, but he's a proven NHL player," Bab**** said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday night after the team landed in Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks on Tuesday. "He works, works and works and he'll make us a harder team to play against."

Good, I hope so!!!!!

It sounds like he is a physical offensive threat. We need that. To many of our forwards don't play physical enough. Since Shanahan left to go to NY, we have missed that offensive weapon who isn't afraid to mix it up. While he is no Shanahan, maybe he can fill that roll of an offensive weapon who likes to mix it up. Bertuzzi is also of that mind set. It sounds like the front office wanted to bring in some forwards who would mix it up on the ice.

Even with all the young talent the Wings have this year...what a great luxury to have.

With Yzerman and Shanahan gone, this was suppose to be the year that he would have a chance to shine, but he didn't produce, except in shoot-outs.

Look what Calder did. His first game as a Red Wing, scored a goal on his first shift and then later in the game he added an assist. He also more gritty than Williams, he did a good job of the forechecking. I got a good feeling about him.

This is a bit dated, but its worth sharing.

CALGARY -- One of the greatest leaders in hockey history has agreed to lead Team Canada into the next IIHF world hockey championship.

Red Wings Vice-President Steve Yzerman will serve as the general manager of Canada's entry at the event in Moscow this April and May, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday.

"I really enjoyed my experiences in international hockey," said Yzerman, who helped Canada to gold at the 2002 Olympics. "I enjoyed watching them as a young boy and participating throughout my career. Being able to stay involved to me is very exciting."

Yzerman played in three world championships, two Olympics, a World Cup, Canada Cup and world junior championship.

It's that kind of experience and the leadership Yzerman demonstrated at those events that helped land him the GM job.

"He was really a leader with Team Canada the last number of years," Hockey Canada President Bob Nicholson said. "We see that helping with his relationship with players, but I really see him taking a great leadership role with this team on a management (level).

"I think Steve will (make the transition) from ice to management very easily."

The 41-year-old is seen as a potential candidate to help assemble the Canadian team for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. But Yzerman wants to see how this experience goes first.

"Talking about the future is kind of premature with regards to international hockey," he said. "This is my first venture in."

Canada finished fourth at last year's world championship in Riga, Latvia, after losing a bronze-medal game to Finland.

It last won gold at the events in 2003 and 2004. Canada took silver in 2005.http://www.detroitredwings.com/wings/article.jsp?id=5654
