Fielder only played first base once in a while...he was used in the outfield more.

Bregman was the first baseman in 84'

All of those candidates are good chocies, but I ahve to go with the only Tiger 1B to have his number retired Hank Greenberg aka "Hankus Spankus".

If you have seen this the doctumentary on his life that came out a few years ago, I would suggest it, it's very good.

It's that, it's just that I think having his number retired trumps everyone else. Only two other Tigers have had their numbers retired.

You're on crack. Evans was a career .250 hitter. If your position doesn't require movement, at least hit the ball.

Hank Greenberg is obviously the best Tiger 1B, but saying Evans is the most underrated 1B ever is crapola (in the Tiger org, sure, but not "ever"). He was underrated, because he was just a power hitter.
Also, we're not talking about an organization rife with amazing first basemen.

I read somewhere that Al Kaline and Ted Williams before he died both thought he was HoF material. They said that his problem is that he played in the same league as Cal Ripken so he was rarely voted an all-start starter and that he didn't do the back flips that Ozzie did. Trammel said he didn't think he had the numbers, but they disagreed. Talking about his career BA. and career fieldign percentage. They said that if he had not had the misfortune of playing in the same league and at the same time of Ripken, that he probally would have been voted to the all-star game 10 times or so.

Thats wishful thinking, the year after he got fired as manager the Tigers turned into contenders. As much as I would like to see him go in as a manager, I just don't see it happening. It would be nice if Detroit would retire his number though, although that won't happen. They don't retire players numbers very often.

my favorite Tiger was Mickey Lolich

Since you all already know I'm old, I won't worry about telling this story. I lived in the Gibralter/Trenton area as a child. My little league team, with me as the starting 1st baseman, won the league championship three years in a row losing a GRAND TOTAL of two games in that stretch. (I just had to throw that in. )(And NO, first basemen are NOT fat. ) One year our reward was to go into Detroit to watch a Tiger's game. It must have been on Father's Day because the pre-game festivities included a Father-Son game where the Tigers players went against their kids. Well the Dads mixed things up and didn't play in their normal positions. For instance, Mickey Lolich played Left Field. Well, we were all in the second deck of Left Field. One of the kids hit a pretty good shot out to Mickey, he chased it down and instead of throwing it back into second base he turned around and fired it in our direction. Remember, we were in the second deck and he was halfway to the infield. That ball was headed straight toward my friend and I. There was no way in the world either one of us wanted to put our hand in front of it even though we had on gloves so we ducked to the side and it hit his seat. The sound was deafening and it cracked one of the wooden slats on the back of the seat. When we came back up our eyes were as big as saucers and Mickey has been one of my heros ever since.

I don't know if he is the greatest. The Detroit Free Press had an article aboiut that a while back. I think Mitch Album wrote it. I think he said that he is one of the greatest, but probally not the greatest, but defintely tied with Al Kaline for the most loved.

I don't know. So mnay great athletes so its ahrd to pick one. He didn't put up the numbeers that Gorde did, but its harld a fair comparision. The league was so different when Yzerman played compared to when Howe played. I've heard some people say the Bobbly Lane was, others say Al Kaline. It's so hard it make a definite statement. You can't go wrong with any of them. I do think he is the most loved though, yes even more than Al Kaline. Just imagine how crazy the Joe will be when they retire his number.

See now I am probably the only hockey fan who doesn't like Howe. I don't know why...I just don't like him. I remember how they were making a big deal out of it because he was going to play a game with the Vipers and that would mean that he would play in 5 decades. Well I was at that game, and all he did was go out on the ice and skate a lap around the ice, and got off. I was like 'what the hell...that doesn't even count!!!"...and ever since then I have not liked him.

Kaline is another great one!! And definetly loved, but I think that is a generational thing...the older sportsfans say they love him most of all, and younger fans love Yzerman more. I know for me it's because I am young still and I don't ever remember the Wings without Yzerman as Captain. This first season without him will be really hard to watch.
