Things don't look good for Casey.
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Detroit Tigers first baseman Sean Casey has a partial tear in a muscle in his left calf and could miss the rest of the AL Championship Series against the Oakland Athletics.
Casey injured himself in the sixth inning of Detroit's 5-1 victory in the series opener and underwent an MRI exam Wednesday that showed the small tear.
"The trainers are hoping for a miracle when they say possible by the end of this series," manager Jim Leyland said before Game 2. "But I think that's probably not going to happen. So I think we'll just have to do with what we have."
General manager Dave Dombrowski was more optimistic, saying there was "a good possibility" Casey could return late in this series and an even better chance he'd be able to play if Detroit made it to the World Series.
The injury could be a costly one for Detroit, which does not have another true first baseman on its ALCS roster after not activating Chris Shelton. Shortstop Carlos Guillen moved to first base after Casey left Game 1 and started there Wednesday night. Neifi Perez started at shortstop.
Guillen played eight games at first base in the regular season this year -- his first major league action there in his career. He also has played first base in the World Baseball Classic and in winter ball in Venezuela.
"To me it's easy," he said. "I don't feel it's too hard. Shortstop is hard. When you play shortstop, you can play everywhere."
Guillen made his first error at first base Tuesday on Jason Kendall's spinning grounder in the seventh. He made up for it a batter later by starting a 3-6-1 double play.
The injury also forced Leyland to juggle his lineup, moving Placido Polanco down a spot to the No. 3 hole and plugging Perez into the No. 2 hole.
"What happens is you just improvise when you get in situations like this," Leyland said. "We'll do what we have to do. Is it an ideal situation? No, it's not. But I remind everybody that the Oakland A's lost their double play combination so we're certainly not looking for any sympathy, nor do we expect any."
Oakland is playing without injured shortstop Bobby Crosby and second baseman Mark Ellis in the ALCS.
Casey batted .245 with five homers and 30 RBI in 53 games after being acquired in a trade from Pittsburgh. He is 7-for-20 with four RBI in the postseason.

This article doesn't make it sound as bad.
OAKLAND -- Tigers first baseman Sean Casey is expected to miss the rest of the American League Championship Series with a partially torn muscle in his left calf.
The team announced Wednesday that Casey, who suffered the injury trying to run out of the batter's box in the sixth inning of Tuesday's Game 1 win, has a small partial tear of the fascia muscle in his calf. He'll receive treatment Wednesday and Thursday, then be re-evaluated on Friday.
Under normal circumstances, manager Jim Leyland said he was told, the injury is around a 10-day absence, which would cost him the rest of the ALCS. While Leyland said they're leaving open the hope that Casey could beat the timetable and return for a possible Game 6 in this series, Leyland said he'd consider that "a miracle."
"Because of the type of injury," Leyland said, "they're going to try to speed up the process."
While the news wasn't surprising, it sets in the idea that the Tigers will have to move on for more than a couple of days without their first baseman and No. 3 hitter. Casey, acquired from Pittsburgh at the July 31 trade deadline to provide a left-handed bat, ascended into the middle of the order down the stretch. Though he hit .245 in the regular season with the Tigers, he hit .320 with runners in scoring position.
He was no small part of their AL Division Series win over the Yankees, going 6-for-17 and providing steady defense at first base.
Because rosters can't be changed in the middle of a postseason series, Detroit can't call up backup first baseman Chris Shelton. That leaves them starting Carlos Guillen at first base, a position he played every day for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic and on occasion for the Tigers in the regular season.
One of the Tigers' three utility infielders will start at shortstop. Neifi Perez started there Wednesday, but Leyland said he'll consider it on a day-to-day basis. Part of the reason for starting Perez in Game 2 was that he has better success against A's starting pitcher Esteban Loaiza than Ramon Santiago and for his playoff experience. Leyland said he might play Omar Infante if he needs an offensive spark.
"What happens is you just improvise when you get in situations like this," Leyland said. "So we'll do what we have to do."
As for replacing Casey in the third spot, Leyland made a somewhat unexpected move and shifted Placido Polanco down from the second spot.
"He's a guy you can put anywhere," Leyland said, "and he's not going to change [his approach]."

I liked the Tigers' chances from the outset in the AL, though a very tiny part of me would have been OK with the A's cause they're a local team. But being a Giants fan, we generally hate the A's anyway, especially in interleague play. (I rarely root for the A's when I go see them.) I see a Tigers-Mets Series, though. And it'll be a good one. Both teams are strong. I have to be honest and say I wish the Mets had Pedro for the playoffs. But they're a good team and the Tigers and Mets will each have their hand full.

Rich Harden averaged more than one strikeout per inning this season. Kenny Rogers averaged less than one strikeout every two innings in 2006.
Rich Harden has made a total of 28 starts over the past two seasons. Kenny Rogers has had at least 30 starts in each of the last five years.
Rich Harden was born on Nov. 30, 1981. Only a few months later, Kenny Rogers made his professional debut in the Rangers' organization.
Yes, today's pitching matchup in Game 3 of the ALCS offers contrast upon contrast upon contrast: righty vs. lefty, power vs. finesse, promise vs. durability and youth vs. experience.
One other contrast: Harden, the A's 24-year-old right-hander, hasn't pitched in a big-league game since the final day of the regular season, Oct. 1. Rogers, the Tigers' 41-year-old left-hander, is coming off one of the signature moments of his 18-year big-league career as he befuddled the Yankees for 72/3 innings -- striking out eight -- in Detroit's 6-0 victory in Game 3 of the ALDS last Friday night.
"I've pitched a lot of good games, but probably not as physically demanding, to say the least," Rogers said in Oakland on Wednesday night. "The feeling of being able to go do that, I don't think you can put that into words."
Harden's layoff (he did have an instructional-league tuneup Monday) isn't that long considering he missed more than a month early in the season with a strained back and then sat out more than three months because of a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
The A's can take some comfort in knowing Harden pitched well in each of his return starts after stints on the disabled list: one run in four innings with six strikeouts against Minnesota on June 4 and one run in three innings with seven Ks against Cleveland on Sept. 21.
Oakland also can take heart in this: The A's went 9-0 in Harden's starts this season and they're 47-25 in his career starts.
Then again, Rogers is 21-7 lifetime against Oakland, including 2-0 in 2006.
"I know I have a tough time with him," said A's third baseman Eric Chavez, who is 11-for-54 (.204) with 18 strikeouts in his career against Rogers.
Rogers, who pitched for the A's in 1998 and '99 has fared particularly well at the Coliseum, going 25-4 in Oakland. So facing him at Comerica Park has to rate as a break for the A's, right?
Not necessarily, Ken Macha said. The A's manager recalled a conversation he had with Rogers, who has spent the bulk of his career with the Rangers. Macha said Rogers liked pitching in Oakland better than in Texas because it's "nice and cool here."
Noted Macha: "Well, it's gonna be nice and cool in Detroit on Friday." The forecast calls for temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s.
A hard thrower is believed to have an edge in chilly conditions because hitters don't appreciate feeling that tingling sensation in their hands when they get jammed by a sizzling fastball.
So when Rogers was asked, "If it's really cold, is that an advantage to the pitchers?" he responded, "Not the way I pitch."
Several members of the Tigers' staff, including starters Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman and relievers Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney, don't pitch the way Rogers pitches. They throw heat, heater and heatest.
Rogers has served as a mentor to those pitchers who are only beginning to learn their craft.
"From the start of spring training," Rogers said, "they understood that I'm not a guy who pushes anything on 'em. I'll give 'em any kind of information they need, that may help 'em, but it's up to them to try it and at least be confident enough to throw it away if it doesn't work for 'em."
"There's so much I've probably picked up from him that I don't even realize," said Verlander, 23. "That's why a lot of times in the dugout or wherever, I'll sit near him, just kind of picking his brain a little bit; even if he's not talking to me, I'm listening, trying to gain some knowledge."
Detroit manager Jim Leyland said the Tigers signed Rogers in December not because Rogers could counsel their young pitchers but simply because Rogers could pitch.
"We didn't get him to babysit anybody," Leyland said. "We didn't get him to tell anybody what the big leagues was all about. We got him because we knew he was 59 games over .500 in the big leagues."
Rogers was 190-131 in his career before his 17-8 mark with the Tigers this season. And with of all his history in the majors -- including a perfect game for the Rangers against the Angels in 1994 -- Rogers says he still gets the butterflies before a game.
"If anybody says they don't feel anything, they're not telling you the truth," he said. "Without a doubt, nerves, anxiety, just anxiousness. You're going to be as excited and nervous, and you can say scared, however you want to say it, those feelings all come up in games like this and the ones that are upcoming."
On Wednesday, Harden talked about what he expected his emotions would be today: "I won't be too nervous. I'll just be focused. It starts (in the) morning; everything I eat. When I get to the field, everything I do. Shaving that day. Everything builds up to that fired-up moment on the mound."

From what they told me the only ones they could get 4 seats next to each other for both my friends and their wives (who happen to be sisters) was the 2nd to last row on Kaline Corner, they thought for the price those seats were just not worth it and that they would have more fun drinking it up at a Sports Bar.

I don't know why the Tigers feel apart at the end of the season and then turned it on during the playoffs. The one thing that was missing during most of the slump was that Polanco was out, but the teams should not let one injury bring them down like that. I credit Leyland with the turn around. He has been there before and he knows what he's doing.

I'm already sick and ****in' tired of hearing about how amazing it is where the Tiggers are today, after losing 119 games three years ago. How many players are on today's roster who were there in 2003?? Five or six......tops????
WOW!! What an accomplishment!! You went from the bottom to the top in three years, and all it took was a whole new team, manager, and coaches!
Call me biased as hell (g'head..it's true), but I remember that in '91 both teams in the WS were cellar dwellers a mere 12 months earlier.

You might not think that is amazing, but it is rarely done. How many people are on the teams for 3 years ago, I don't know, although SCSI might. Let's look at more recent history though. Most of the team is the same teams that we had last year. Last year we didn't even snif the playoffs, this year we are going to the World Series. It really is an amazing story.

Last night they shows this stat of most post-season homruns in Tiger history. Added to the list year was Ordoniz, Granderson and Monroe to join Greenberg, Trammell and Gibson. List had to have at least 3 post season homerun's. Pretty good company on that list.

redbeard don't even bother trying to explain it. We don't have to explain anything...our team is going to the World Series and they are going because of all of their hard work. It doesn't matter if it's the same players as last year or a completely different team. That doesn't take anything away from the fact that they worked hard and are being rewarded!!

I know he wants to play and beleives that he wil play but its not his decision. It's Leyland's and it all depends on how his ankle heals. Leyland doesn't play players who are not completely healthy. Zumaya wanted another cortizone shot so he could play, but Leyland and the training staff said that is not going to happen.

Leyland takes the players by their word when it comes to bringing them back. He was going to keep Polanco out another couple of weeks, but Polanco said he was ready to come back. The Zumaya thing is different because he is not healed. The shot would have just been a temporary solution. Leyland would prefer to let Zumaya heal instead of going with the temoprary.

I looked around for the ad, but couldn't find it and he didn't say where it was. I am guessing one of the Detroit papers. She says that she is from Metro Detroit. Dan Patrick said she used a lot of exclamation points.

I was wandering around ESPN.com to see if there was anything about Leyland shuffling the pitching rotation and I came across this.
DETROIT -- They stood on that ledge all night long, peering in through the bars of the Comerica Park fence along Adams Street. They looked like prisoners, but they wanted to be there, unpaid attendance with the best non-ticket in town. They were college girls and older men and Detroiters and suburbanites and little kids poking their heads through the bars like toddlers getting caught in banisters.
They could not see the big scoreboard, or the field, or much of anything beyond the ivy draped between them and right-center field. So they did not see the arc of the baseball off Magglio Ordonez's bat, or where it landed.
But they heard. And they knew.
The old Tiger Stadium felt like a huge boxing ring, with its hulking grandstands hanging over the field and its klieg lights shining like a spotlight straight down. But Comerica Park is just that -- a park with a view out over the skyline and a street outside that almost feels like it's inside. Adams stretches from the buzzing Cheli's Chili Bar (owned by Chris Chelios) on one end to Ford Field on the other. And on one side of the street sits a long fence with a view into a field that so recently played to tens of hundreds instead of tens of thousands. The Tigers lost 585 games in six seasons as the Adams Street fence stood cold and empty in the distance.
This summer brought swells of fans to Adams, at first only a trickle and then greater and greater like waves in a growing storm. At the season's first sell-out, during a June weekend against the Cardinals, members of a wedding party snuck out of a reception to cling to the bars in their tuxes and ****tail dresses. Through the fence they could see people in the smokers' section right inside, puffing and people-watching in their tees and mini-skirts. Something was happening here.
Then the fall chill came, and the cold bars of the fence got warm with palms and arms and even legs draped through. And the view was of fans in Tigger costumes and orange-striped pajamas and guys with mops of black curly hair stapled to their caps -- "FRO-donez!" Fans on the fence saw mobs of people running and jumping and hugging as the Tigers beat the Yankees less than a week after they blew the division by losing an entire series to the lowly Royals. They slung their arms around each other like old friends.
In Saturday afternoon's sunshine, the fence filled up early. So did Adams Street itself, with parked school buses and fans standing on top, waving brooms. So did a parking structure across the street, which somehow became an overflow party area from Elwood Bar and Grill. The fence had become the front row.
So nobody dropped off the ledge when Dan Haren struck out six batters in three innings, or when the Tigers fell behind for only the third time all series, or when Jason Grilli walked four A's with 12 pitches. The fans hung on the bars like magnets in the frigid wind, even with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the ninth.
Then came a base hit, and a roar, and a base hit, and a roar, and then the chant: "Oh We Oh! Maaa-glio!" Ordonez had homered earlier in the game -- again out of view of the fence dwellers -- but now the hope was only for him to make contact, give Craig Monroe a chance to sprint home.
The fence fans saw all the arms raise, and they heard that wonderful one-second pause in the screaming as thousands watched to see where the little orb would land.
Then they heard. And they knew.
They leapt and yelled on that tiny ledge, with one arm raised and the other still clinging. They saw the fans inside dancing and high-fiving and texting and even crying. And the chills ran through them like currents, and made them warm.
Then the fans on the inside, on the patio near the Pepsi Porch, turned and ran through the smoking section and skipped up and back along the fence, reaching up to slap five and grasp hands and even hug through the bars. Soon all of Adams Street swayed.
The beauty of this Motor City season has been the utter surprise. There was no real hope of spring, and no chance of a letdown come the summer. This wasn't the Red Wings or Pistons or Michigan football -- teams that carry expectations like rucksacks. The Tigers were a baby left in a blanket on a doorstep, thrilling with every coo and smile and crawl and wobble. So the city was happy with a winning team, delighted with a contender, giddy with a playoff clinch, and downright dizzy with a win over the almighty Yankees, who will never ever know the wonder of an impossible pennant.
The economy may be bad, and the auto industry may be struggling, and the Lions may be winless, but for a good hour Saturday night, a slab of pavement in Detroit was the happiest place on Earth. The Tigers had given a town its most unforgettable two weeks ever.
The party went on Saturday night, in the lot outside Cheli's, and in the parking structure outside Elwood's, and everywhere in between. And even when Adams went quiet again, well after 10 p.m., there were still two kids hanging on that fence.
Waiting.
