Reminds me of the pastor who got divorced and was forced to resign. He said, "I should have killed my wife. The church would have forgiven me for that..."
It is not about forgiveness.

Crud. I can't even tell you to google it, because you would have nothing to google.
In other words...
I related that little story not in order to touch on what Paul writes to Timothy about "husband of one wife" or what he writes to the Corinthian church in 1 Cor 7.
To me the story points out how often a divorced Christian - especially a pastor - is pretty much thrown by the wayside as damaged goods for the rest of their life.
BTW - Today my wife and I are celebrating 35 years of marriage (she's my first wife.) so I am not harboring a hidden agenda of some sort.
Just sayin'.

I was not referring to Paul. I am referencing leading by example. I am referencing the purpose a man seeks to continue as a professional minister in the face of his failure. I am referencing palatable sin and its deleterious effect on the body.

I can dig that. (Got that hippie feeling today, thinking back 35 years.)
Isn't all sin "palatable" for a season?
Heb 11:24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;
Heb 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
Heb 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Yes. And when it is the minister who is putting the cherry on top, people who care about the Body of Christ need to speak up.

None of us should willfully sin, but we do...We should all strive daily to live a life that is pleasing to God.
Pastors are automatically held to a higher standard than folks in the congregation...not in God's eyes, but in man's.
We're all human, we're all going to fall short and sin everyday. Because a man has been divorced is no reason that he can't be in church leadership.
We all have our pasts, and if God can forgive us of our past sins then we should be able to see past them as well.

23But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
24But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
25And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
26And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
27And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
It would seem that the elect (saved) would be gathered afterthey see him coming in the clouds. To be honest, I have never given it much thought because regardless of when I know I will be gathered with the elect.

Many of the Missianary Baptist I spend the bulk of my time with are all Post-Trib & Pre-Mil.

Cbut1,
Another question just occurred to me. I have noticed in the last five years or so that a number of Baptist groups have been attacking and reviling Billy Graham. I have seen Independent Baptist websites which would have a photo of Billy Standing next to either the Pope or Oral Robers and captioned "Billy Graham hobnobbing with the Anti-Christ" or words to that effect.
These same groups would encourage "their people" to boycott Billy Graham meetings and even go so far as to say that he has been preaching a false gospel for years and that people who answer the altar call in his meetings don't actually become Christians.
Where would your group stand on the Billy Graham issue? Or other ecumenical evangelistic endeavors for that matter?

We have no large standing official position concerning men such as Billy Graham.

Man is fallible, God isn't. While some versions may have a few words that are different, the context remains the same: from the dawn of creation, God has pursued a relationship with man. Man is fallen and God, in His abundant love for us, gave us His only begotten Son so that we can have fellowship with God for eternity if we just believe in Him.
Everything else is pretty much icing on the cake imo.

That's why I don't use commentary or study bibles I just use Bibles for study. I do read Greek with some effort so it does help in placing proper context and historical relevance to a story.

Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

The child likes to think that. However, the intelligence of the parental unit is directly proportional to the length of time the child has been out of the house, living on their own.
I have heard that Mark Twain left home at the age of 16 because his Father was so stupid. When Mark came home two years later he was pleasantly surprised at how much the older gentleman had learned in his absence.

Okay I got a question...this is something I have wondered about all 29 years of my Baptist life.
Why are there so many green bean casseroles at the pot lucks? Surely people would realize that 12 other people are going to make green bean casseroles, and the world would not end if they just made a simple jell-o salad....
Because:
1# It's cheap to make
2# It's easy to make
3# Most people like them (especially me if it's made right)
Our church (sorry, not Baptist!) has a sign-up sheet with different catagories for these functions . That way we don't end up with all those green bean casseroles!

Cbut, to get this thread back on track, why do Baptists not incorporate the ritualism found in many other denominations? I know why, but others may not and Im going to help get this thread back on track if it kills me.

That's the old "Baptist, Baptist 'til I die" spirit at work! :mrgreen:
With over a decade as a Southern Baptist in my youth I would point out that although we avoided "ritualism" we had plenty of "traditions" and "habits" that were carved in granite. We had a definite liturgy without naming it such. We called it the "order of service" instead.
You always knew exactly how many songs would sung before the sermon and that we would be singing verses 1,2 and 4.
You knew that the first Sunday am service of each month was "Communion Sunday."
You knew the sermon was going to be 20 minutes on the dot.
You knew where all the regulars sat in the sanctuary and God save the visitor who sat down in one of those seats.
