The series where Austin Dillon is running the #3 for his grandfather, Jeffrey Earnhardt, and other future drivers . . . and where Joey Logano made a name for himself before earning his NNS and NSCS rides.
This is where the future of NASCAR is developing. The CWE and CWW are the place for future stars. The race (set for Speed) will be huge because a Cup scout or two might find the next big thing.

Right... just like all the other Sprint drivers... they all cut their teeth on bumper cars and go-carts. You watch those kids if you want, but as far as I'm concerned the season is over.

Third phase of construction at Dover track under way
Wider pit road, new retaining wall among the changes (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/08/dover.renovations.pitroad/index.html)
By Track Release
January 8, 2009
12:32 PM EST
DOVER, Del. -- Phase 3 of Dover International Speedway's "Monster Makeover" is currently underway. Construction crews in Dover have already removed the existing frontstretch pit wall and preparations are underway to install a longer, SAFER (Steel And Foam Energy Reduction) wall in time for the May 29-31, 2009 NASCAR race weekend. The end result will be a wider, safer pit road, and one additional pit stall.
Construction began in mid-December 2008 as crews removed the existing 1160 ft. inside steel retaining wall that separated pit road from the apron and concrete racing surface. The demolition makes way for a new 1592 ft. concrete wall that will be fully equipped with SAFER barrier. The SAFER barrier walls consist of rectangular steel tubing backed by foam blocks and reduces the force of the initial impact of a crash.
The new inside retaining wall will be 432 ft. longer than the previous configuration and will be extended further into Turn 4, allowing the track to add a 43rd pit stall for competitors. The wall will also be set nearly five feet closer to the track apron, eliminating all grass on the frontstretch, while providing more space in the drive lane of pit road. A large plot of grass will also be removed in Turn 4 to make way for the new entrance to pit road.

Petty, GEM complete deal, will run four cars in 2009 (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/08/rpetty.gem.merger/index.html)

STATESVILLE, N.C. -- Richard Petty will remain a prominent figure in the garage. However, Petty Enterprises -- a 60-year staple in the Cup Series -- has closed its doors.
Gillett Evernham Motorsports and Petty Holdings announced Thursday an agreement in principle to form a new Cup team co-owned by Richard Petty, Petty Holdings (owned by majority shareholder Boston Ventures) and Gillett Evernham Motorsports.
Richard Petty and Petty Holdings will continue to own and operate the Richard Petty Driving Experience as an independent entity.
"I want to get back to winning and together we will bring the resources, technology and infrastructure to do that," Petty said.
The team will field four Dodge entries in the 2009 Cup season: No. 9 (driver Kasey Kahne); No. 10 (no driver announced); No. 19 (A.J. Allmendinger) and the No. 43 (Reed Sorenson).
"This is pretty exciting stuff," Kahne said. "I've gotten to know Richard over my five years working with Dodge and I look forward to being around him more. This is pretty awesome. The Gilletts have done a fantastic job of putting this together. I think you can see their commitment to winning. We could have kept on the same path, but they made a pretty bold statement that they are here to win."

Gordon third in Dakar seventh stage, fifth overall (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/09/rgordon.dakar.7/index.html)

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Carlos Sainz of Spain regained the overall lead of the Dakar Rally on Friday by winning a seventh stage in which NASCAR star Robby Gordon placed third, moving up to fifth overall.
Sainz beat Volkswagen teammate Mark Miller of the United States by 3 minutes, 41 seconds to secure his third stage win of the race. Gordon was third in his Hummer, 4:13 back after the ride from the Argentine city of Mendoza to Santiago, Chile's second largest city.
Overnight leader Giniel De Villiers of South Africa placed sixth and was second overall. De Villiers took the lead Thursday after Nasser Al Attiyah of Qatar was disqualified for missing two control points. Al Attiyah won the first and third stages of the race.

GEM official Reddin says Sadler will drive No. 19 (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/08/esadler.ajallmendinger.no.19.car/index.html)

Elliott Sadler will drive Gillett Evernham Motorsports' No. 19 Dodge in 2009.
Sadler had fought a possible ouster at GEM, and the driver's attorney told reporters that Sadler would file suit to get back into the car unless a settlement was reached. In May, Sadler signed a contract extension with GEM through 2010.
"We had some differences; we're a family," GEM CEO Tom Reddin told MRN Radio on Friday. "We love Elliott. We got everything resolved. We were together [Thursday], talking, and it's done." (Audio (http://www.nascar.com/video/audio/2009/01/09/nascartoday.mid.fri.audio.nascar/index.html?MostPopular))

It will be good to see Mark Martin racing full time this year. I am really looking forward to it. Kinda lost interest last year. Sooner or later, I am going to have to pick another driver. Yesterday was Mark's B-day. He turned 50, I do believe.
WhiteHatBobby
January 11th, 2009, 8:49 am
Mark turned 50 two days ago, in fact. It is probably 1-2 years and that's it. Brad Keselowski is being groomed to take over in 2010 or 2011 and will drive a Dale Earnhardt, Jr. car in 2009. Keselowski's big break came when the free agent drove a Germain Toyota when Ted Musgrave was suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct for Memphis and should have won. That led to a Dale Earnhardt, Jr ride for the rest of 2007. When Hendrick signed Earnhardt, they put Keselowski under the Hendrick banner.
Good news for Brad -- GoDaddy.com will sponsor the unsponsored races for him in the NNS in 2009. They had enough sponsors for a half-season, and now they have enough for a full season. The #88 NNS car will have a reverse scheme to the JR Motorsports #5 car in 2009. Earnhardt designed the GoDaddy.com Chevrolet livery.
Kasey Kahne will race, and Tony Stewart will field cars, at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals next week. Two weeks from now (see the 2008 thread), the 2008 Toyota All-Star Showdown (per NASCAR regulations, the race is a 2008 season race) will be run; Joey Logano will defend his title, and Austin Dillon (Richard Childress' grandson) is exempt and is in the field. The next big NASCAR star might be in this race, considering David Gilliland (2005) and Joey Logano (2007) won Nationwide Races at Kentucky the next season after winning the Toyota Showdown, which crowns them as the overall champion of the Camping World Series. It is a one-race showdown for the 2008 CWS.

Halftime Breaks returning to the Camping World Truck Series?
NASCAR is pondering changes to the Camping World Truck Series to save costs. One potential is using the early 1997-mid-1998 rule in the series that banned tire changes on pit stops, and only permitted fuel stops and truck adjustments. It would allow tire changes only when a tire went flat. A halftime break (10 minutes) would be used for tire changes, similar to what was used in the first 3 1/2 seasons of the series.

Awesome. Xena's annual post count bump thread is alive and active. I hope you enjoy posting the next 65% of the posts in this thread, because no one else will.
Also, Casey Mears will kill the 07 team while Clint Bowyer helps build the 33 into a championship threat. I love RCR, but really, Casey Mears? If he can only win one in Hendrick stuff, you really think he can win in a Childress car?

I'm torn. Been a Jeff Gordon fan from the beginning-
but I think he may be all washed up.
I dunno if he will ever win another race. I think it's unlikely.
his driving style has changed, and he is more erratic.
He is not as aggressive either.
I think it's going to be a Carl Edwards / Jimmie Johnson/ Kyle bush three way slugfest this year.
If Logano races, I'd expect him to win one.
I'm gonna stay with Gordon this season I guess-
sometimes it almost seems like there is a saboteur working in the Hendrick camp, trashing Gordon and Dale Jr.
and I have a suspicion about that.

New look Johnson! (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/18/preseason.thunder.notebook.jjohnson.cedwards.dearn hardtjr/story_single.html#page2)
Three-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson showed up for Fan Fest with a beard that was a cross between Tony Stewart's often-worn scruff and a full mat. While the look is something that was often seen on drivers during testing in the past, the neat thing about Johnson's was, he said there was probably a permanent record of it.
"I typically grow it out in the winter and just decided to kind of stick with it a little longer," Johnson said. "Technically, I haven't been in a Cup car so the season hasn't started for me yet. I did tape a commercial the last two days with it, so it might stick around a little longer."

I like it... I hope he keeps it... it puts ten years on him.
I also like that shot of Newman with the M16. Gives him an air of authority. He has lost some of that on the track in the last season... maybe he should take that in the car with him. ;)

Ya know, I loathe the Chase and the top-heavy COT too. If Brian had to drive a COT, he'd be backpedaling to get a decent racecar for the guys.
I mean really, if we go back to the 70s, they had no AC in their helmets and the "cool suits", and no cautions.
Look how the guys after a race:

David Stremme's #12 needs a sponsor - NASCAR has banned the #12's sponsor, Cellco Partners.
For now Cellco will run a #12 with no sponsor identities -- looks like the Scuderia Ferrari ********. The #12 will be the *************** Dodge.

Tony Stewart to race at Daytona for Hendrick Motorsports (http://stewartent.com/tony-stewart-to-race-at-daytona-for-hendrick-motorsports/2009/01/19/)
Jan 19th, 2009
CONCORD, N.C. - Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will attempt to qualify a No. 80 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet prepared by Hendrick Motorsports for the Feb. 14 Nationwide Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
Stewart, the defending winner of the Camping World 300, has won the season-opening event three times — twice with owner Kevin Harvick (2005 and 2006) and once with Joe Gibbs (2008).
Should he qualify, the race will mark Stewart’s first-ever start for car owner Rick Hendrick. The effort will be led by 2003 Nationwide Series champion crew chief Lance McGrew.
“After winning the season-opening Nationwide Series race at Daytona three times, we’re going to try and get another one, this time for Rick,” said Stewart, who has seven career Nationwide Series victories. “Hopefully we can go back-to-back for a second time and put the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet in Victory Lane. Rick and I have been friends for years, so it would mean a lot to me to get a win for him.”

It wasn't that good of a race meet last night. The rescheduled Super Late Model feature (postponed from Friday - rain) wasn't even a race.
The 51-car field took to the start, and had two cautions, and the race ended that quickly -- the 150-lap race ended after just 15 laps - one caution at the start, and then another caution a few laps later, and the race was over. Yet Travis Thirkettle (Newhall, CA) won the race, which fortunately was an "exhibition".
The official reason for ending the race after just 10% was the dreaded curfew. Agreements with the track mean racing must stop after 12:15 AM PT (3:15 AM ET). The long All-Star Showdown feature was the problem.
The Saturday Late Model race was more fortunate, but after a few cautions, it ran around of the 40-minute time limit. The 75-lap feature ended after 55 laps and was decided because of the quirky "last completed lap" rule. After the crash in Turn 2, a new leader developed, but track rules state the last completed lap was the determining factor, so the pass was nullified. At the national level, in this situation, NASCAR would have allowed the pass under scoring loop and last-lap rules which would have come into effect.

Ganassi team eyes fourth consecutive Rolex 24 win (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/24/rolex.24.daytona/index.html)
By Mike Harris, The Associated Press
January 25, 2009
12:59 AM EST
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Lexus Riley Daytona Prototype driven by IndyCar stars Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Indy Lights driver Alex Lloyd was out front after nine hours in the Rolex 24 sports-car endurance race.
Franchitti was at the wheel of the Chip Ganassi Racing entry when it drove into the lead just past midnight Saturday night.
Ganassi's two-car team was trying to pull off the unprecedented feat of winning the twice-around-the-clock classic at Daytona International Speedway for the fourth consecutive year.
Jimmie Johnson, the three-time reigning Sprint Cup champion, also had some back luck as the Pontiac Riley he shares with former CART champion Jimmy Vasser and Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty. He stopped to have a broken tail light replaced and wound up having the gearbox replaced. The entry fell nine laps behind, but had made up four of them and was ninth after nine hours.
"The clutch was creeping real bad and I broke the gearbox trying to get it in gear," Johnson said. "I really feel terrible about that.
"But the car's driving great. We're lightning fast in the infield, but we're missing some straightline speed. We're about a second off, no matter who is in the car. We've got to run a different race and hope we catch some cautions at the right time. But there's still a lot of racing left."
The fourth car on the lead lap at 12:30 a.m. ET was the new Penske Racing Porsche Riley driven by Tim Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Ryan Briscoe.
The pole-winning Porsche Riley shared by David Donohue, Buddy Rice, Antonio Garcia and Darren Law fell out of the lead in the 10th hour when Garcia spun off track. But the team remained in contention with more than half the grueling event to run, just three laps off the pace in eighth.
The two Ganassi cars struggled a bit in the daylight with grip on the warm track, but Dixon appeared to be right when he said he expected them to be stronger after dark.

Intent. The Camping World Series officials had seen the #08 involved in an earlier bumping incident where it was sent into the high groove and into the wall. The other thing NASCAR also judged was malicious intent; Logano clearly dove low and intentionally pulled a move similar to Carl Edwards last year at Kansas in an attempt to pass Jimmie Johnson; Logano hit Peyton Sellers and caused other cars to crash.
The Camping World zebras saw this attempt of a Carl Edwards-type banzai move, and said "no mas". This type of move will no longer be tolerated by NASCAR officials because it was clear malicious intent. This does teach a lesson to young drivers; if you try this move, you will be penalised if you make contact. It doesn't matter if it's Kansas or Irwindale; do this type of dumb driving, you will be penalised.

NASCAR stepped on their bag on this one. All they had to do is re-schedule the race for Sunday. Our Car owners traveled 1700 miles one way from Edmonton Alberta for this race. Our Sponsor put up 20K for 3 laps of green flag racing. What a joke. They knew full well when we were bringing our pit equipment in after the Late Model Race we only had 20 minutes to run the show, They told us we had 90 minutes. They expect 52 Late Model cars to run caution free especially after they didn't even give them warm up laps? The friggin' tires were still cold. Hell, their poster boy's Hornaday and Logano couldn't even get through two laps without taking somebody out.
We brought two cars spent 20K, sat in the rain for three days and this is the respect NASCAR shows the guy's who made them rich. At least we don't have two totaled race cars after that joke.
My brother started 31st and our teammate 47th after their genius idea of starting the locals up front and the rest by pill draw. All they had to do is go off the transponder times from the night before... But no, that would have meant their golden children Hornaday, Rip Michels and Nick Joanides would have had to start at the back because their times didn't register because they took off their transponders for practice (which is a no no).
After three laps my bro went from 31st to 19th. The car was friggin fast. I am so ****ed off right now....
Then Thirkettle (the eventual winner) actually has the balls to get out of the car giving high fives to his crew like he just accomplished something huge.... LOL Well, I guess it really isn't his fault, I would probably be happy if I just made 10K for 3 laps of racing...
What a disappointment. Sponsors are hard to come by. Before the race our sponsor was talking about getting a Camping World car and moving up... He is so ****ed off right now that probably isn't going to happen.
All they had to do is re-schedule... Even if it meant no TV.
Or hell, just cancel the damn thing all together. Hell, the track owner got the OK from the city to run all night/ morning after curfew. He even was willing to pay a large fine if needed. NASCAR, Don't insult your grassroots up and comers like you did with this joke.
They did it so they wouldn't not have to refund entry fees, take back tires etc. Now we are hearing that the might not even payout because the race did not go 1/2 way.. I'm sure that was planned.
Man, I am babbling with a key board...LOL I am sorry. We just flew home and I am tired, my back hurts, my feet hurt and I am just ****ed off all around.

The part that everybody missed is that three laps before, Sellers drove Logano into the fence to get by. The EXACT same way at he EXACT same spot. If you have the race recorded watch it. The reason it was not that noticeable is that their were a couple of other cars in the picture...
If Logano was disqualified for that move then Ron Hornaday needs to be banned from racing for life.. That friggin' moron crashed half the field in two classes. I put the blame on NASCAR.
Here is the real reason they black flagged Logano... He changed his carbeurator on Pit lane after tech. You CANNOT touch the car after tech. NASCAR let him go with that. DQing him for crashing Sellars on the last lap was a make up call for FAILING to put Logano to the back. They couldn't let him get away with both. They knew everyone would cry fowl.. Well guess what, they are anyway.
If Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale JR did that same move they would be at home with a trophy, winnings, Points and at most a fine or points taken away..... They never take away a win unless it is a flagrant rules violation.
What a joke.

At Irwindale, similar to other circuits with a compound banking such as Iowa, South Boston, O'Reilly Raceway Park, and Bristol, there are some situations where you want to be pinned to the wall. The high lane is the fastest line.
Going low and intentionally going for the other car in a Carl Edwards-type manner will not be tolerated anymore. That's a good lesson to teach.

I thought I would have cooled down a little by now.....
We had two pit carts that weigh a couple of thousand pounds a piece to get across the track and into our pit stall in a few short minutes.. I barely had my firesuit on, one shoe off and they are going green.... I was lucky I could call my brother clear and talk him through that first crash.. Hell, that crash probably resulted because a team might not have been ready.... So I get my shoe on finally and the officials come over the radio and say "5 car is the winner, CLEAR the pits"...... LOL... ***? So just a few short minutes later, here we are hauling all of our equipment back out.....
We just about had a riot at the NASCAR trailer.. They had to call in the local police for Security. They had the balls to come over the PA and request the teams return the transponders... LOL I think I was successfull at convincing most of the teams to refuse to return the transponders until they get entry fees refunded or getting their "Winnings"....
They called each driver into the trailer one by one to try and stroke them and make them feel important... They had 4 NASCAR officials and one driver at a time in the trailer with the door closed.
If the driver showed any resistance they would try to intimidate them with threats... My brother didn't give a ****. (We don't run ASSCAR we run ARCA.) He told them he wanted his car owner and sponsor in the trailer with them and demanded it. Once all three were in there they let loose... LOL No yelling but very sternly. They feel they have the idiot who called the shots ******** his pants right now. Our sponsor is a very successful Canadian businessman who knows his **** and made these sorry excuses for officials look like idiots.

Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, not NASCAR, is running the race. The rule at short tracks generally is curfew rule makes races official. Since the race hit the curfew, irregardless of the number of laps, Toyota Speedway would have to pay out or face lawsuits from the teams.
Most short tracks have a curfew, and TSI agreed to a 50 lap or curfew race when they agreed to the waiver from Irwindale. The TSI Web site says all drivers are being paid for the curfew-shortened races.

Not for this race. NASCAR ran the weekend, Payout, officiating and all decision making. Bob Defazio got clearance from the City of Irwindale to run past curfew and was even willing to pay a fine.
NASCAR pulled the plug and is responsible not Irwindale.
NASCAR brought their own officials and for extra help NASCAR paid Irwindale officials.
Even if we had the simplest question about format, payout, tech. etc. leading up to the race We had to call Daytona...
Now, for season races that are NASCAR sanctioned is when Irwindale controls tech, pay-out etc. per NASCAR guidelines..

Not for this race. NASCAR ran the weekend, Payout, officiating and all decision making. Bob Defazio got clearance from the City of Irwindale to run past curfew and was even willing to pay a fine.

I finally watched the Bobsled Challenge and it was pretty good. Joey Logano came in 2nd and he pulled off his helmet and put another hat on that was Spartanesque. The pic below shows him front face, which you can't really see how funny it was.

Xena,
Thought you would get a kick out of this pic. The team that was pitted next to us took some aluminum brake line tubing and bent it in the shape of a hand flipping the finger and taped it to their antenna... They drove around the pits by the NASCAR trailer three times before they left... Pretty funny, especially after we had a few "Barley Pops".. :))

The Auto Club 500 is going to be a night race because based on ESPN's history with NASCAR, the Pepsi 500 (October 11) will not be allowed to be a night race. That race is looking more like it will start between 11 and 11:30 AM.
NASCAR hasn't scheduled a morning start since 2001, when the NAPA Auto Parts 500 in Fontana started at 11:30 AM; four of the first five Fontana NSCS races started at during the 11 AM hour; also, there hasn't been a 12 Noon start since 2003, when Talladega started at noon local.
The reason is that since the race is an ESPN Broadcast Network race, they do not want it past 3 PM (6 PM ET). The big problem is ABC wants to protect their Sunday Night programming, especially Desperate Housewives. ESPN also is not wanting an RTL (German television) personality to be the race's grand marshal, which happened at the race last year, since ABC does not have a show from the German television network on their roster, unlike CBS (The Price Is Right), Fox (Idols), and NBC (Got Talent).

Gibbs gets 'out of control,' flips sponsor during race (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/01/26/gibbs.miller.arena.race/index.html)

It's not often that Joe Gibbs loses control, but he did Friday night at Hampton Coliseum in Virginia.
Considered a cool customer not only during his Hall of Fame coaching career with the NFL's Washington Redskins but also atop the pit box, Gibbs faced off with Interstate Batteries chairman Norm Miller in a match race during intermission at Arena Racing USA's Hampton Roads.
Gibbs donned one of Tony Stewart's old driver suits and humbly admitted, "I've accused Tony of being a little overweight ... I had five people trying to zip it up" over his midsection.
Miller was on the pole and fended off Gibbs for five laps. However, on Lap 6 Gibbs got loose coming out of Turn 3 and literally drove the No. 20 Home Depot car beneath Miller's No. 18 Interstate Batteries ride entering Turn 4. The end result: Miller's car barrel-rolled as both cars came to a stop.
Gibbs, who was declared the winner, did exactly what his wife, Pat, warned him not to do: "Do not wreck Norm; you'll cost us a good sponsorship!" Gibbs recalled.
"I was out of control," Gibbs said after the race. "I got up there a couple of times and I thought, 'I've got to get in [to the corner] deeper.' "

While Speedweeks is under way and now in that little break, there is a huge discussion NASCAR and Daytona must take for 2010.
The problem is Super Bowl XLIV in Miami Gardens (275 miles to the south) takes place February 7.
The InBev Shootout is set for February 6, with qualifying on the 7th. The Rolex 24 is January 30-31.
NASCAR may be forced to move the Shootout into January or set it was a Monday or Tuesday night race next year to prevent qualifying from going up against the Super Bowl.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Yates Racing's Paul Menard will sit on the pole for the Budweiser Shootout on Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway.
Joining Menard on the front row will be Richard Petty Motorsports' Elliott Sadler as the 28 Sprint Cup drivers drew for starting positions Thursday night.
Defending race winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start ninth as he opens his second season for Hendrick Motorsports in the 75-lap exhibition race. His teammate, three-time defending Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, will start 21st.
Four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon drew the last starting spot -- four of the last six starting positions were drawn by drivers in Chevrolets.
The field is comprised of seven entrants from each of the four participating manufacturers. The top six drivers, based on owners' points from the previous season, from each manufacturer (based on their 2009 manufacturer alignment) are in the event. Each manufacturer gets a seventh driver, either a past Cup champion or another car based on owners points.

NASCAR: Drivers pass preseason drug tests UPDATE but... (http://www.jayski.com/cupnews.htm)
All drivers in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Nationwide Truck Series passed the first round of drug testing under NASCAR's new policy, officials said on Thursday, but that wasn't the case for crew members. Kevin Harvick said two pit crew members for his Truck Series team were released after failed tests and he expects there are others throughout all three series. "There's definitely more out there,'' Harvick said during media day at Daytona International Speedway. "There's a lot of people that are looking for jobs right now that are straight-up people. It couldn't have come at a better time.''

Penske has renamed the entire racing operation Penske Championship Racing as a way to get around the censored sponsorships. Logano's participation in the Daytona 500 is in jeopardy if he keeps driving like that. He will run in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 after qualifying third, but NASCAR is watching him like a hawk in the ARCA race (4 PM, Speed).
He must pass the proficiency test at this race. He has only one restrictor plate start (2008 ARCA Food World 250-Talladega).
NASCAR is already very concerned about the 2010 Daytona 500. There are two situations that concern NASCAR -- first, the ARCA race at Talladega is moving to April because of darkness concerns they have had in the three instances (the first was called early to darkness, last year they had to wave off the GWC rule) they have run the ARCA race on Friday after Cup Happy Hour. The second is that means likely many young drivers do not clear the proficiency test. This could mean next year at Daytona NASCAR may have to adopt the IRL's proficiency test.
Should NASCAR adopt the IRL Proficiency Test for Daytona and Talladega?
Phase 1: 250-270 km/h; no drafting
Phase 2: 270-290 km/h; no drafting
Phase 3: 290-310 km/h; no drafting
Phase 4: 300+ km/h in drafting situations; must pass drafting test.
In all cases at least five drivers -- active or retired -- must observe the rookie test by observing the driver around the track. Drafting test must feature a minimum of ten cars. All ten drivers used in test must be active or retired drivers with experience in the COT at plate races. Retired drivers may participate in observation around the track; the ten drivers who participate in Phase 4 of drafting will also assist.
Driver must pass 20 laps of draft proficiency testing to earn clearance for Daytona and Talladega. Proficiency testing will also include ability to make it to pit road.

Joey Logano misses drivers meeting, must start last in Budweiser Shootout (http://www.scenedaily.com/news/articles/sprintcupseries/Joey_Logano_misses_drivers_meeting_must_start_last _in_Budweiser_Shootout.html)
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Joe Gibbs Racing’s Joey Logano will start in the rear of the field for the Budweiser Shootout for missing the prerace drivers meeting. Logano was scheduled to start 19th, but he will start last in the 28-car field because the Automobile Racing Club of America Re/Max Series race lasted past the start of Budweiser Shootout drivers meeting.
Logano finished second in the ARCA race behind James Buescher, who will compete in the Camping World Truck Series for Circle Bar Racing this year.
The Budweiser Shootout is 75 laps, split into a 25-lap opening segment and then a 50-lap final segment. All laps will count and all restarts will be double-file with the lapped cars in the back. Like a normal race, the race could be extended for one attempt at a green-white-checkered finish.

God bless the fans! After the National Anthem singer's wireless pack shorted early during the Anthem, the fans knew she was still singing, and they just joined her until the system got back.
No prerecorded like what they did at Super Bowl XLIII! These fans know no faking -- if it breaks, we'll back her up! 100,000 backup singers is perfect for NASCAR.

Will the #20 and #82 crews fix the car and run them? Remember, there was no testing this off-season and fixing the cars for a test may be crucial since Logano and Speed are rookies and this may be an important time to gain experience and testing.

Seeing the big red background with a #14 on the backdrop of Stewart is something to learn, but should be something to learning. Fox usually has the drivers' car colours and number as the background of the driver's mug.

Happy took it at the chicane extended, and the crash quickly ended the race so the safety crews could come.
He didn't lead until Lap 78 at the chicane extended. Reminds me of the 500 two years ago when he took the lead at chicane extended.

Congrats to Happy Harvick!
That was a greatly entertaining race regardless of the restricter plates and the COT. In fact, the durability of the COT improved the race.
Good-hands driver of the race: Jeff Gordon. Wow! What fancy maneuvering to keep from piling up in the melees... twice... or was it three times.
Too bad about Logano and Speed being taken out so early... I wanted to see them go head to head.

Gooooooo Mark Martin! I am going to enjoy seeing him race a full season again. Does anyone know why he wasn't in the Bud Shoot-out?
The Bud Shootout is a manufacturer's race. It consist 28 drivers representing the top six teams of each manufacturer from the previous season Bud Pole Award. Only the top six teams based on Owner points earned the previous year qualify. The race car receives the berth, not the driver, so any driver changing from one of the top 6 teams to elsewhere no longer qualifies. Prior to 2009 any driver who had won a pole position during the year was eligible for the Shootout.
Martin did not qualify under those rules.

Okay. I knew Martin had won the Bud Shoot-Out previously, which before meant that he automatically qualified. I wonder why they stopped it this year?

The race had a new sponsor and a new format that was conceived by the Belgian brewer InBev, the new sponsor of the race. A pole format could only be approved by Canadian brewer Molson (NYSE : TAP), since Molson now sponsors the Pole Award.

They changed the format to please the manufactures.

The weather is questionable for the Daytona 500. They are calling for scattered storms in the afternoon -- and remember, the 500 starts at 3:45 PM. Sunset is 6:14 PM, so the final 35 minutes to hour will be run at night. Something has me thinking this race may be moved up to 3 to avoid the storms.

Move it up, or because they are racing under the lights, they can rain delay it for quite some time. Either way, I want to see a FULL race to the finish.

Zoom-Zoom! The Mazda Atena has scored the biggest win for the Japanese automaker. The Ford Fusion is a "rebadged" Mazda Atena, and so the major score between the Toyota-Mazda battle is Atena 1, Camry 0.

And this is huge momentum; Roush is undefeated at the Auto Club Speedway when it follows the 500.
Another thought - NASCAR should have used the traditional weather rule by starting the race 45 minutes earlier (3 PM) instead of the 3:45 PM start. Had the race started 45 minutes earlier, the race would have been over.

Are you kidding me?! It is only 7 p.m. in Florida, they have lights, and a lot of people are off tomorrow for the holiday. You don't think those fans would watch the end of the race if it ended at midnight? NASCAR couldn't have waited the rain out? From what I saw, it is one huge cloud and then clear behind it. If I had paid good money for a ticket, I would be ****ed right now. I know a lady that works the track every race and she says that the fans are always ticked off when they call this race early. Maybe this is the reason it didn't sell out until the last minute. People are getting tired of these candy ass calls. It is the DAYTONA 500 for pete's sake! People pay to see 5-0-0.
This is one of the main reasons why I have found myself watching and following NASCAR less and less. All these new rules take the fun out of the race, in my opinion.

Matt Kenseth is the Daytona 500 winner.
I like Matty a lot, but this is not a good win. Oh well. These things happen.
Would have been better to go to the end???...Sure.
But...
1) Matt was running in the top 5 most of the day..
2) Out of the remaining cars...He had the best one....( He's my Driver..But I think I'm being objective here )..
3) Every other Driver...All 42 of them would have LOVED to have been where Matt was when the rain came...
4) Matt put himself in a position to win with some AMAZING driving when Vickers and Jr. started that big pile-up.......Matt was up against the wall on the outside and SOMEHOW saved his car....I'm not sure HOW he did that...
5) Even though my guy WON??..I'm a bit dissapointed...Mat was 25-1 here in Vegas and I DID NOT put a dime on him....:frown:

NASCAR told the Fox crew they saw the radar and it didn't look good. Mike Helton said the rain probably would have ended around 9 PM, and with humidity, it wouldn't have been able to get the track dried until past 11 PM.
Although race tracks are exempt from city ordinances on noise, the noise rule changes at 10 PM at Daytona.

There may be just five cars -- all five Roush cars -- that will contend for the win the next seven races. By the time we get to Martinsville, Roush may be 5 for 5 and dominate this season. The Hendrick team is struggling -- under the now-defunct CART series points, the four Hendrick drivers would have ZERO points (only top twelve earn points).
Auto Club Speedway: Roush has won this race four consecutive times.
Las Vegas: Dominant team at Las Vegas: 1-0 with COT.
Atlanta: Won October's race.
Bristol: 2/4 overall; both August races in COT era.
Texas: Swept last year's races
----------------
Penalties?
Expect huge (100 poiints and $50,000 or greater fines since this is in Nationwide) penalties for JD Motorsports (#0 O'Quinn) and Harmon Racing (#84 Harmon) after violations for Saturday's Camping World 300.
JD Motorsports: Spring violations (springs too light for plate racing)
Mike Harmon Racing: Illegal ballast (weight that can be shifted for chassis balance). Weight was outside frame rail.
Key Nationwide Series rule changes:
1. An engine used in any race, starting in Fontana, must be used again within the next three races, sealed. That engine will be sealed and be used for another race. However, teams will be allowed to remove the oil pan and change bearings. Should a team suffer three consecutive engine failures, NASCAR may waive the rule should there be engine failures. Races do not include Daytona or Talladega.
2. Ballast used in wedge adjustments must be inside the frame rail.
3. The Chevrolet Impala is now approved for the Nationwide Series. All Chevrolet teams have new bodies, including nose, roof, and tail, this year as the Nationwide Series will go to the Impala. If NASCAR cannot implement the NNSCOT plan for 2010 (as is expected because of the economic situation), the Monte Carlo bodies from 2007 will become illegal.
-------------
On the Rostrum - Podium Finishers statistics.
3. This is AJ Allmendinger's first podium finish in Sprint Cup history.
2. Kevin Harvick's streak of durability continues as this was his 81st consecutive Sprint Cup race he has finished. Should he finish the Auto Club 500, Shelby 427, and Kobalt Tools 500, he will have a shot at the record at the Food City 500.
1. This is Matt Kenseth's second career major, and Roush's first Daytona 500, meaning Roush has finally won all four majors (only three majors currently exist).
For the third consecutive year, a last-lap pass determined the winner of the race.
