So with six races left before the chase and Kyle Busch in 14th, 82 points out, who has money on him making it in?
I do... but at whose expense I haven't a clue. The top three look pretty comfortable, but there is no clear gap from 4th on down this year. Pretty well all of them are vulnerable to a string of bad luck.
pee wee herman should be able to make it in-
fi he starts driving intelligently, for points.
simple formula. Same one tony stewart used to win a championship:
TURN DOWN ATTITUDE BY 20%
Works like a charm.

Certainly attitude got him in trouble in a few races, but of late, he has been plagued with mechanical problems... much like happened to him during the chase last year.

HORNADAY MAKS IT FIVE
Camping World Truck Series driver Ron Hornaday, Jr., 51, makes NASCAR history. He is the first driver in the modern touring-series format of NASCAR to winfive consecutive races in any series.
The last in NASCAR overall was Bobby Allison's five what is now Sprint Cup races in 1971. There were 47 races in 1971, and 13 races were less than 150 miles, including dirt tracks, including a 250-lap race affair in Long Island on a fifth-mile oval, and another 250-lap event at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in New York, when it was asphalt. Of Allison's five consecutive, they were the 600, Dover (when it went 500 miles), Michigan, Riverside (400 miles then), and a small half-mile in Houston (300 laps). The 300 lap race only had 14 cars start and Allison won just $2,200 for the fifth consecutive win.
When the trucks reconvene at Bristol, will Hornaday make it six and break his own modern touring series record?

There are still weather-related issues at Pocono delaying the start of the race. Sprinkles are still in the area, but the bigger problem is weepers on the race track.

I think nascar should get rain tires as a part of the system.
I'd also like to see the rules changed, to use MODERN tech-
and to also allow active suspension, and traction control.

The American Speed Association from 2000 until its demise in 2003 (thanks to MTV, which destroyed short track racing) used an LS1 Chevrolet engine complete with electronics.
NASCAR should look at going to 3.5 litre V6 engines based on stock 4-cam V6's on street cars today.

The car that he got into to the wall was the better car. So they are trying to get the chassis to behave. Also, Tony went to his high school reunion and he also might have a new "friend" who is a driver too. A blonde. Tony might be over-stretched.

Tony making major adjustments under caution. Crew member looking at something shock related on left rear.
Chad and Jimmie argue lightly about pit stop. Chad wants Jimmie to get out in front of cars and said he's leaving lane open.
Denny was warned to stay in line on restart to green flag.
Didn't gain a position since he was leading but can't change lanes.
From Tony and Darien's conversation it sounds like maybe they have found the problem and can start working on it.

How did MTV destroy short track racing? :eh:
Let me explain how MTV ruined short track racing:
1999 - CBS management in Nashville, angry at the takeover by Viacom, not knowing their fate, fired back after losing the NASCAR contract by purchasing 25% of the American Speed Association and a television contract for the Midwestern short-track series that gives them a five-year deal to air the 20-race short track series with live coverage. The series had just "graduated" Jimmie Johnson (Herzog Motorsports) to the Nationwide Series for 2000. CBS also renews its deal with the World of Outlaws for live racing, including the prestigious King's Royal and Amoco Knoxville Nationals, with Ralph Sheheen, Brad Doty, and Steve Evans.
A change in formulae was set for 2000, with the 9:1 V6 engines replaced by a crate LS1 Chevrolet V8 engine.
The LS1 would be built by Katech (which builds GM's Corvette Racing engines) and be stock, with stock fuel injection and stock parts from the street LS1, including a catalytic converter, muffler (required in ASA because of noise ordinances), and unleaded fuel.
The engines would be sealed and could be rebuilt by the manufacturer. Gary St. Amant, a Midwestern short-tracker, would run the entire 2000 season on one engine, winning the championship.
April 2000 - New MTV Networks management, while not in charge of CBS Cable operations, pull off a controversial move at Texas Motor Speedway. During CBS' coverage of the Albertsons 300 NNS race, a rain delay comes, and instead of a push to TNN, as was the case the previous year, the MTV management pull the race coverage away and dumps racing for a movie. This move infuriated NASCAR, Mike Joy (play-by-play announcer), and the CBS production staff.
May 2000 - Viacom takeover complete, CBS Cable staff phasing out begins.
September 2000 - MTV National replaces The Nashville Network. CBS Nashville (at Grand Ole Opry) shut down, MTV National and CMT move to MTV's headquarters in New York. David Hall (now part of the National Stock Car Racing Commission) refuses to join MTV.
November 2000 - CBS Charlotte (in charge of the CBS/TNN/Turner motorsports operation; located at LMS) shuts down. MTV in total control. Evans, one of the legendary CBS Charlotte-based announcers, dies while in Las Vegas for the WoO Finals.
August 2001 - ASA files a complaint against MTV in an Indiana court. MTV announced MTV National (now Spike) would air on tape the final two races of the ACDelco Challenge Series, the races at the Minnesota State Fair and the Night Before F1 at ORP. ASA files an injunction, and an executive blasted MTV, stating, "(MTV) has decided to get out of the motorsports broadcasting business, despite the fact we still have three years remaining on the original media broadcast rights agreement."
Brian Robbins, the son of ASA owner Rex, said, "When we entered into the agreement with (The Nashville Network - CBS Cable) in January of 2000, both parties viewed the relationship as a ‘win-win’ situation. The spirit of the agreement called for (CBS) to help ASA grow its business through its equity ownership position. Unfortunately, with the change of ownership, it appears the new management (MTV) does not have the same vision for the partnership as we had with (CBS) at the time we made the agreement.”
The World of Outlaws was also moved from live to tape by MTV. By the end of 2001, MTV killed all "remnant" motorsports contracts inherited from CBS. That included the Amoco Knoxville Nationals, the most prestigious race in sprint car racing. MTV's mistreatment of the WoO was the catalyst three years later that led to a split in the sport.
It is also said that MTV also was very unfaithful in killing CBS Nashville that they lost the Grand Ole Opry broadcast contract to Scripps' Great American Country (GAC), and MTV yet still wields power by forcing GAC in many areas to be on premium digital cable while MTV's networks (MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Spike, BET, CMT) to be basic.

March of the Volunteers
Arise, ye who refuse to be slaves!
Let us amount our flesh and blood towards our new Great Wall!
The Chinese nation faces its greatest peril,
The thundering roar of our peoples will be heard!
Arise! Arise! Arise!
We are many, but our hearts beat as one!
Selflessly braving the enemy's gunfire, march on!

Start and Park Team Busted!
Larry Gunselman's team (#64) was busted by NASCAR for the ruse.
According to the team, with driver Mike Wallace, the team was black-flagged for violations on Lap 11. NASCAR's reasoning was "Safety Violation, Pit, No Crew."
After the Rockingham fiasco in 2004 of a start-and-park team, NASCAR imposed a new rule for Sprint Cup racing mandating a pit cart and pit crew in an effort to stop the start and park ruses that had developed. Turns out on Lap 11 today, the #64, a start and park team, was busted for a "safety violation," which was the intended start and park.

I did not get in here during the race... but it is still worth pointing out that both the 14 and 48 teams showed why they are championship contenders. That was an impressive performance by both. I hope neither gets dumped on by lady luck during the Chase... This could be a great season finish.
In spite of Little Big Ears sorry performance, I still bet he makes the Chase... both he and the team are much better than that.

Doing the math . . .
If Tony Stewart can pad his lead over Kyle Busch by 56 more points Sunday, then Stewart will become the first driver to clinch a playoff spot. If Stewart's lead over 13th is 781 points, then he will be the first to lock. Nobody else can lock in at Watkins Glen.

Yes... and realistically (not mathematically,) everyone from 21st (Mears) on down is eliminated from the Chase. Unfortunately, Jr. is in that group. It is somewhat ironic that Mears is doing better than Jr. without the Hendrick car...

Ladies and Gentlemen, Please Stand for the National Anthems:
Australia's sons let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Anyone think that Dale Jr. is all washed up?
or just in a slump, like Jeff Gordon was all last year?
I think the guy has something going on. He's a better driver than his finishes show.
And I think he also needs to reexamine his racing style and adapt some.
Dale Senior was a master at adaptation. Many times I've seen him take a particularly bad car, and still get a top 10 out of it. I didn't like Dale Sr all that much, but he was a very very good racer, and a master at adapting to the track when his car would not work where he wanted it to work. Dale Jr. does not seem to have that talent [so far].

Sprint Cup cars do not race in the rain, unlike their Nationwide counterparts. We need to get 46 laps in Sunday.
One odd thought: Dale Jnr has been better in even years, but not in odd years. Any coincidence?

there is one driver who is better at adaptation than Dale Sr was
and that's Jimmie Johnson.
However, I think the best racer on the track right now is Tony Stewart.
Johnson has a great team, great engines, and a great crew chief, and it's not to hard to get top 15s or better when you have that.
Also, Mark Martin is really shining this year. I think he should retire after this year, because I don't think he will ever see another 4 win season, much less a 1 win season. I'd like to see him go out in style.
Now if he wins the championship....the heck with what I think...:))

I think the only one harder to win is Bristol.
Bristols even hard to finish, much less win.

Its too bad Martin spent all his time with Roush, now that hes with a better team he shows that he was better than his carrier shows.
A big part of Johnsons success is having the best crew chief in NASCAR.
And I think Dale Sr. really kept Dale Jr's head on straight as a driver. The more time goes by without him the farther off Jr. gets. But I think he can pull it all back together.

something I just can't see the point of, is why did Sprint go to the COT, instead of just going all out and bringing in modern cars? why use 20 year old tech?
they would have been better off to just go modern.
Use modern regular cars, and strip off all the emission control crap. Soup them up for racing.
then they would be able to do REAL testing on modern cars to where modern cars could be improved.
they would be putting modern equipment under the harshest possible conditions to see how it holds up.

Well, there is talk about changing things. The COT is too top-heavy. The guys figured to put anything on the bottom of the car which helps, but the changes will make the COT a better race car.

Churchill warned that those who forget history were doomed to repeat it again. NASCAR is reluctant to go to monocoques because of cost and construction issues. Monocoque racers in the 1950's such as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet did dominate in the early days of dirt tracks, but when raced at the Daytona 500 in the early days, they were very flimsy. Some drivers were severely injured and crash damage was bad after the crash-laden 1960 Daytona 500 that NASCAR had to take two races off the calendar in order for teams to be able to repair the cars.
Furthermore, as independent drivers learned in the 1960's, it was much easier to "upgrade" cars that use a ladder frame when model year changes were made. It was much easier to swap off new noses and tails than buying new monocoques each year.
Personally, I think fuel injection can work. The American Speed Association tried it decently until MTV destroyed them. Kyle Busch raced in that series in 2002 when it was in decline because of the previous season's MTV debacle, as he wasn't eligible in NASCAR after rules were rewritten after the CART FedEx Championship Series incident at Fontana. At the time, Mr. Busch was 16 and racing Trucks for Roush, then sponsored by Hugo Chávez; during the Fontana FedEx Championship/Craftsman Truck weekend, CART tossed him out of the NASCAR garage because of requests by CART sponsors. He promptly raced a season in the ASA. Reed Sorenson also raced in the ASA, as did Scott Wimmer, with the fuel injected formula. Jimmie Johnson also tested the formula in its early years, as did Ted Smokstad, whose siblings are in the Sprint Cup garage. Johnny Sauter also raced with this formula. The cars were slower, the power was less, but the reliability was up with truly stock engines.

August 9th, 2009, 2:36 pm
The call was right after spotters witnessed lightning. We see in college baseball (remember, there are many former college athletes who work pit road) once lightning is spotted, everyone must leave the field immediately and play is suspended until 30 minutes after the last lightning flash is detected. Players will usually activate the tarps.
We could have started at 1 PM, but we'd be barely iffy on getting even 46 laps in. Once the lightning was spotted, the race would immediately be stopped under lightning rules. A 30-minute delay would have struck at 2:10 PM, so at minimum we would have been able to get with a 1:01 PM green flag and no yellows would be 56 laps, since it takes about 1:15 a lap. This is without yellows.

"Especially in the afternoon" -- remember, they start at High Noon. We'll see if we can get 46 in. The shortest modern Sprint Cup race was Kyle Petty's 1992 victory here, the shortest race since NASCAR set a minimum standard of 400km (250 miles; since cut to 300km or 186 miles after the energy crisis) for all Cup races. Petty won a 51-lap race where ESPN started the broadcast on Lap 34 of the 51 laps that were run after the first rain delay; the second rain delay ended the race, and Petty won the race at 125.154 miles, the shortest Cup race since the implementation of the rule. Dave Marcis won a 135-mile race in 1982 at Richmond.

Turn 5 is an issue it seems. They are using the original Turn 5 as it was laid out in 1956, and used from 1961 until 1970, and the layout used is the 1971 Six Hours.
With an excessive number of incidents this week in the Loop-Chute, might it be appropriate to slow the cars slightly by running a 500k on the full course? How that slows the cars is the exit of Turn 5 then leads downhill, plunging into Turn 6, a left-handed sweeper that leads to a short straight to a 180-degree Turn 7, then uphill to a right-hander in Turn 8, and rejoining the "1971 Six Hours" course in Turn 9. "Turn 9" is actually part of the straight, about 400 meters from Turn 10. The Cup cars don't use Turns 6, 7, or 8.

Gordon and Hornish are the two to be concerned with concussions. If the doctors finds one in either driver, under NASCAR's medical rules now, they're out for Michigan. CART had a rule where a driver is out a minimum of seven days for a concussion. Brad Keselowski would drive the #24 and Justin Allgaier would take the #77 should that be the rule.

They really need to visit this situation and come up with a better barrier... tires are simply NOT the best solution.

Aw, Marcos said, "Tony made no mistakes. What a fantastic driver he is. It is an honor to race against him"
I love both of them http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v336/XenaWarrior/Smilies/Heartbeat.gif

From Kurt, "Who's balls are bigger". He was talking about Max Papis.

I got this from Twitter:
Gordon spent a little extra time in the care center, but he's okay after the big hit.
Smoke just got so excited spraying champagne that he accidentally broke the trophy!

The Jim Riesbeck Trophy (named for the man who revitalised the track after it was closed in bankruptcy court in the 1980's) will have to be sent back to Corning to be repaired!
P. S. When you watch any show, you'd expect to see all storylines. Watching an R-rated version of the show and they cut out the bus stop incident -- they only talked about it in a mid-race summary.

They tried the Styrofoam barriers. Remember what happened when Jimmie hit them in The 90?

If they can stop a 160 mph F-18 that has missed the arresting cables with a net, they can stop a stop a 120 mph stock car with the same. Actually, at the Glenn all they have to do is temporarily move the wall between the Sprint track and the inner track and use a standard energy absorbing wall. Any "safe" barrier that stores and releases energy instead of absorbing it has the potential to throw cars back onto the track. NASCAR must take a hard look at the use of tires... the only reason one or more of those drivers was not seriously injured or killed was because of the COT.
