I'm in one. Got Gordon and Hamlin. I'm still destroying my competition, but not by as much.

I had Gordo, Denny, Newman and Ragan. I guess there will be a lot of peeps with low pts. Glad I had a good one from last week.

Which one are you on? I am on FoxSports.

Eight fans are injured in last-lap crash at Talladega
Edwards' No. 99 flies into catch-fence, spraying debris (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/04/26/post.race.fans.injured.talladega.cedwards/story_single.html#page2)

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Eight Sprint Cup fans were injured on the final-lap wreck that sent the No. 99 Ford of driver Carl Edwards airborne into the safety fence on the front stretch at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday.

The incident occurred at the conclusion of the Aaron's 499 race that was won by rookie driver Brad Keselowski.

Fans were treated for what were described as mostly minor injuries from flying debris, according to NASCAR official Jim Hunter and Dr. Bobby Lewis, medical director of the track. Neither Hunter nor Lewis could say with certainty whether the pieces of debris came from Edwards' car or from the fence, which suffered considerable damage after absorbing the high-speed impact.

"After the incident that occurred on the last lap, we are treating seven patients for injuries received from flying debris," Lewis said. "The injuries appear to be minor and non-life threatening. One female patient is being transported by air, because of traffic, for further evaluation and treatment."

The fan transported by air to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital was being treated for facial injuries that included what Lewis described as a minor laceration of her lip and "possibly a broken jaw."

Lewis added that an eighth patient, also a female, was air-lifted to nearby Brookwood Hospital after suffering chest pains that occurred during or shortly after she witnessed the incident while sitting in the same grandstand section as the others who were injured.

As of late Sunday, the track had not released the identities of either female patient or any of the other injured fans.

The remaining injured fans suffered what Lewis described as mostly minor "bumps, bruises and contusions." He did add that "there is the possibility of a couple of minor fractures" which he described as possible "broken extremities." Track spokesperson Kristi King later added that all six had been treated at and released from the track's on-site medical facilities, and that two of them said they planned to follow up with further evaluations from their own physicians.

Some thoughts:

1. The #33 of Clint Bowyer took 179 laps to repair the car just to be speed-legal and run two laps -- and pass four cars that had been knocked out. Those two laps equal twelve points. Four championships have been decided by fewer than 12 points. That means if he can finish the Crown Royal 400 and GoDaddy.com 500, he ties the late Herman Beam for most races without a DNF; Bowyer at 82 also passes Kevin Harvick's streak for most consecutive races without a DNF.

2. The wing only has a 16 degree angle. Might NASCAR consider increasing the wing angle for the plate tracks?

3. Some fans think an IRL-style "no lane changing" rule needs to be adopted.

If this was during the middle of the race, it would have been ended on the spot.

Too bad that those points won't mean anything once the chase begins if he's in it.

maybe they need less rules. nascar has become too scripted and boring.

If those 12 points allow him to be in the top 12, it will mean something.

Now NASCAR is talking about MORE penalties for aggressive driving, including BLOCKING! Are you kidding me?!

NASCAR is probably going to the IRL races at Indy and Texas to observe the "no blocking" rules there. There were serious crashes (including bad injuries) because of blocking at Texas especially in the early years.

The IRL has a rule permitting only one defensive move on a straight. Anything clearly determined to be blocking is punishable. Examples of blocking penalties include the 2003 pass of Matt Kenseth by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kenseth made one defensive move high at the top of Turn 2 to block Jimmie Johnson, then moved down to attempt a block of Earnhardt. Earnhardt was forced OB to pass Kenseth after the blocking move was made. NASCAR ruled Kenseth was guilty of blocking, and punished him by letting Earnhardt's pass be legal.

Went to Talladega last weekend and watched a great race exept for a dumb move by Carl Edwards.

Even the crash that took my driver Jeff Gordon out of the hunt for a win could not ruin the exitement of those cars screaming by at 200 mph 30 feet in front of me.

Looking for a win for that 24 tonight if the rain lets them race.

Well, they got together and there is no way that Edwards is the problem. Keselowski got into Edwards and it is not like Edwards had a left side mirror to see if someone is near his left back quarter. The COT was about for safety, but the guys can't see a damn thing behind; the spotter has to notice every little thing and relay it to the driver, but you can't always get the info in time. And really, Talladega is just a wreck fest.

I can't wait for the 2 road races. I wish we'd have at least 12 races on road courses.

Well I respectfully disagree about Edwards because he was blocking and Keselowski had his nose in there and had position and did not "get into" Edwards.

You are right though about having to rely on spotters.

I love the road courses where the really good drivers stand out like Stewart and Gordon and believe at least 1 road course should be a part of the last 10 races.

Must also add that the most dangerous track is still Daytona IMO and there have been more big wrecks there then Talladega.

I love Talladega ,its so much fun watching them scream by you in person.

Talladega will as well as Daytona always be the place where the big one can kill a fan or driver though.

I was 200 feet from Edwards flying into the fence and the replay does not show just how close it was to ending up in the stands.

Xena
May 2nd, 2009, 6:07 pm
It was scary and I cannot imagine seeing it that close. But I really don't think that either meant to get into each other. They were intent on winning, which happens each race, but with Daytona and Talladega you just know they will have several BIG crashes. For those four races are ones that I watch less than other races because I just get a bit tense. When Sr. died while we watched changed made me a bit skittish on these two tracks.

On a different thought: did you get flashed?

That call by the 24 really bit them in the end.

Yes it did.

He is my driver but have problems with his crew chief.

his one win at Texas came when he overrode(is that a word) Steve during the last pit stop because Jeff thought the changes were going to be too much to give him what he needed.

I did not understand why they stayed out last night because he IMO would have posted a top 5 instead of a top 10 and could have at least had a chance to go for a win.

But he sits atop the standings again and has a little momentum again.

That lil booger in that 18 can drive.......... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

That call by the 24 really bit them in the end.

Maybe they were hoping for rain... Latard would have looked like a genius if it had. ;)

Really, it was not such a bad call... He was only about 20 laps shy (on his old tires) of finishing 3rd or 4th. Either way though, it is not likely Gordo would have finished much better than 8th had he got new tires and, of course, he possibly could have been caught up in a wreck on one of those restarts had he been back there behind the previous leaders mixing it up with lapped cars.

Xena,

I live 80 miles from Florence. This is the Rebel 500, aka the GoDaddy.com 500. The Rebel 500 earned its name from the Confederate Memorial Day (May 10) holiday, as Bob Colvin envisioned. I refuse to use the term "Southern 500" because the Cochran Firm SUED NASCAR to kill the real one, the Chase race in the fall.

Was concerned about my driver Jeff Gordon after the 1st practice
but he rebounded nicely.

Seems like the last 3 years have been tough for Jeff in the night races.......hope he turns that around .

I look for Jeff Burton to challenge for the win Tomorrow.

Just a feeling.

Jeff is my driver and may be biased but I would pick him or that other Jeff...........Burton is poised for a win and hot as heck.

Have you ever competed in auto racing? How would you like it if someone took your place when you qualled better and were thrown out? (I'm not picking on you, I just get ****ed off about the owners points, etc.) It is ridiculous. Mayfield was 40th and Speed was 41st. Menard and Sorenson should not be in the race. Reed using the 43 makes me puke.

Anyway, I will rant on the owner points during the season, so just ignore me. It is one thing in NASCAR that gets me ****ed off. A lot.

NASCAR suspends driver/owner Jeremy Mayfiled under terms of drug policy (http://www.thatsracin.com/140/story/8783.html)

Saturday, May. 09, 2009

NASCAR has suspended Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield under terms of its substance abuse policy - immediately and indefinitely - in advance of Saturday night’s race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

Mayfield was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 7-5 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book. The determination was based on findings at last weekend’s race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway.

NASCAR on Saturday announced the action in a news conference at the South Carolina track.

1000's of drivers would give anything to have a shot at Sprint series and Mayfield throws it away?

Even if he can come back I would not let him if I owned the car.

Don't care what substance it was, if its banned, then see ya.

SceneDaily confirmed it (it was on ESPN/Jayski). Scott Speed is in the #87 for Joe Nemechek is because of the technical alliance for his independent team. This is a financial windfall for Nemechek's independent team, which bought its cars from Red Bull late last year.

Nemechek also doesn't have to hire a pit crew since Red Bull will provide the pit crew. Nemechek also gets extra money, a few cars and engines, and extra support for more races, something the independent driver will gladly exchange a ride now for extra races. This also means he won't start and park this race since Red Bull is providing extra support and finances to run the entire race.

Less than 30 to go at the GoDaddy.com 500. Cale Yarborough won five at Darlington, but none of those were the GoDaddy.com (Rebel) (400) 500.

NOTE: The GoDaddy.com 500 started as the Rebel 300, a convertible race for the NASCAR Convertible division; the name Rebel refers to its Confederate Memorial Day date. If we go past midnight, this race will truly be the Rebel 500 as it goes on that day!

He still isn't the oldest Darlington Cup winner; Harry Gant was 51 when he won the 1991 Heinz Southern 500.

GoDaddy.com Romp: Seven Impalas in the Top Seven, ties the Ford Taurus record of seven for seven at Las Vegas in 1998.

Mark Martin also puts his name on the Mantz Trophy for the first time. Oddly, Cale Yarborough is not on the trophy because he never won the GoDaddy.com 500 in his career.

Xena,

Top top seven in the GoDaddy.com 500 were all Impalas; Hendrick 4, EGR 1, Stewart-Haas 2. The only unlucky driver was Junior, yet it was the Nationwide driver Junior hired who made the top five. You don't win four Nationwide Championships (2 driver, 2 owner) and have a top team without making your own calls. Best one-make romp since Ford's Taurus in 1998 went 7-for-7 at Vegas, beginning a Roush domination.

In an MRN interview a after Talladega, Brad admitted Dale Earnhardt Jr saved his career. After numerous rides in underfunded, field-filler equipment, and each team folding early, he didn't know what was next. He got a one-off when Ted Musgrave was suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct and should have won the Truck race in that one-off. Junior signs him then to a deal to run his Nationwide car -- this wasn't even Hendrick equipment, just cars built by Junior's uncles Robert (Jr) and Jimmy Gee with ECRT powerplants.

Talk about your ultimate two-fer, and the other driver in the deal is the big thing now.

Wins the Aaron's 499, top five in the GoDaddy.com 500 in the GoDaddy.com Impala. He's real. Who thought when he betrayed his family in going to the "dark side" (the Chevrolet camp; traditionally the Keselowskis race Dodges that carried #29 in Midwestern short tracks, ARCA and Trucks) that he'd win two Nationwide Series races as Junior's driver, and wins his first career Cup race -- a major, no less. Now Brad wants to field a #29 Brad Keselowski Racing truck with a few young drivers -- I wonder if Dale Jr will race that truck at Cup/Truck combination events.

Wonder if Dale Jr is a better talent scout than a driver. Maybe Rick found himself not just a driver, but a scout. Jeff Gordon found Jimmie Johnson when he was looking for options after the team lost a sponsor. Dale Earnhardt Jr found Brad Keselowski after a one-off where he should have won a Truck race.

Was great seeing Mark Martin win again Saturday! Until Junior's spin, HMS had 5 cars in the top 10. (And 2 more HMS-affiliates - unfortunately, I'm going to have to start not liking Stewart and Newman a little less than I currently don't not unlike them, since they're using HMS engines.)

There is a NASCAR driver
driving that ol fifty fiver

Unless its Dega or Daytona he can't win a race
Never in the running and always off pace

He always seem to spin all by himself
which is why theres no trophy on his shelf

The poor guy has no driving skill
Never had it never will

How he has a sponsor I will never know
Look theres the wrecker again giving him a toe

You would think he would simply just retire
And just look for another driver to hire

Sick and tired of all the 88 talk
when he should not drive but walk

Its now clear he has no skill
His daddys shoes he could not fill

Its not a name that gives one fame
Not when your driving is lame

The poor lil guy can't even find his pit
Now people know Jr. drives like _ _ _ _

now THIS was cool...

Our work gave everyone a "congratulations" certificate Monday, but I was working from home that day. When I got in yesterday, I saw in my cubicle that the certificate was clipped to a cardboard Jeff Gordon "Open It Up Pepsi Racing" life-sized cutout! I have no idea who gave it to me (but they all know I'm a Gordon/HMS fan, what with the diecast cars of Gordon, the championship picture of Jimmie, the "If you believe the last four words of the National Anthem..." ornament my wife got me, etc.) so I don't know whom to thank. It may have been the lady that works at the front downstairs (even though she and her husband are both Tony Stewart fans, we talk NASCAR a lot, and neither of us can stand Kyle Busch so we can agree on SOMETHING) but she said it wasn't her.

(I knew someone who had a Kyle Petty cutout which he got autographed...)

This is even better than when I was able to find BOTH variations of the 88 die-cast at WalMart last year!

I've been bitching for years when RAIN ruins qualifying. Many fans have talked about using practice for the lineup, so maybe NASCAR will do the right thing. But I'm not going to bet on it, as a powerful team depends on "pit stall racing", so it would be a miracle if it happened.

Why do they insist on dishonouring this country with such HORRIBLE renditions of our National Anthem? It's almost as bad as some of the singers at the Cubs games! (Heck - let Jeff Gordon sing; he can't sing for beans, but I mean, at least it's EXPECTED!)

Just watched the rerun of the race (had things to do for the live showing). What a typical All Star Race! Poor Jeff... he almost had it in the bag if not for the caution that spun Jimmie out.

Hey, Matt was awesome in the first two races, but many drivers have had bad luck in the 11 races, so we have a long season to see who wins the championship. And I hope everyone will enjoy the season. I can't wait for the road courses and I wish there more of them; methinks we should have 12 of them

"I can't believe he gave me the bottom," Stewart said of his inside pass for the lead. "I just cannot believe he gave me the bottom. But I'll take it. Matt is a guy you can trust. (http://www.nascar.com/2009/news/headlines/cup/05/16/post.race.tstewart.wins.all.star/index.html) We got to second there, got by the No. 18 and I thought, 'All right, we have a shot at this thing.'

"We weren't that good until the last run. Crew chief Darian Grubb, I mean he made some awesome calls there at the end to get us where I could drive that thing the way I could. Man, it was fast."

Adjustments during the 10-minute break before the final segment made Kenseth's car better but not good enough to keep Stewart behind him.

Sunday I was watching the final day of qualifying for the Indy 500. John Andretti, who is the driver for Richard Petty's first Indy car, had been finding it difficult to get the car up to speed for two weekends. Finally, in the last hour of qualifying, he found the speed necessary to make it into the field. Just before he went out for his last attempt, he was given a text message from a friend of his who happened to be home watching it all on TV..... the friend told him to widen his entrance into turn 1 to avoid scrubbing off so much speed. It must have worked, as he went 2 MPH faster than anything he had done all month. Oh....... that friend?..... none other than Smoke himself.

Surpisingly, I am starting to warm up to Tony. When he first came on the scene I thought he was a punk with an attitude. I think working around Gibbs mellowed him out, a lot. I was actually rooting for him the other night. I NEVER thought I would see the day. Now the Busch brothers, that is another story. I still think they are punks. Don't care for them much at all.

Have you seen how Office Depot has their racing site up for Tony's win in Sprint All-Star Race XXV?

Independent driver Carl Long and his crew chief were hit with a big $200,000 fine, 200 point penalty, and the prerequisite 12-week suspension for having an oversized engine.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/nascar/2009-05-20-long-penalty_N.htm

The oversized engine was found in inspection after it failed during a practice session for the Sprint Showdown.

Hey, Tony is a racer, not a point racer, he goes for it. Same with the Busch boys, especially Kyle. You don't have to like them, but those boys are very good.

I was very sad when Tony was leaving Gibbs as Joe is a quality kind of person. What I learned during those months is that Tony likes to be in charge whether it is Midgets, Sprints, IROC, IndyCar Series or Late Models, the good car for Nationwide and the COT for the Sprint Cup.

Anyway, he has been mellow so far this year and is having a blast. I hope it will continue. :)

Xena, it's not their behavior on the track that I dislike. I am all for all out racing and racing hard. It the punk attitude off the track that I find distasteful. The Busch Bros. are good drivers, they have the wins to prove it, but their attitude off the track sucks. I guess that is why I love Mark Martin. Have you ever seen him act like a punk? I haven't in all the years that I have been watching. I would say that 99.99% of the drivers respect HIM, not just his driving abilities, but him as a man.

Marky is 50 and the Busch boys are 31 and 24. Both have been better each year with their attitude. Getting to be an old fart seems to mellow them. And I know this how? Because, I am getting to be one of them! ;)

I agree... Kurt definitely used to be a punk (I think the drunk driving incident turned him around,) but I never saw that same level of immaturity in Kyle. Arrogance yes (and well justified,) but he was (and is) a lot more mature then I was at that age. ;)
