Detroit needs to be bailed out now!

Two atomic bombs went off in Fontana today, and the Americans have surrendered.

The leader of the Hinomaru strikes again and once again, we're all Japanese. Please stand for the National Anthem:

Jimmie is on the prowl . . . will he win his third consecutive night race at Fontana?

Note that the February race is now the night race, and the October race is the day race, since ESPN requested that their race move to a 12 noon start so that they will not get past 4 PM (which is when the race moves from ESPN Broadcast Network to ESPN2) to protect "Desperate Housewives".

88 laps to go, and rain is threatening again!

Paint California as a BLUE state again . . . five in a row for Roush at Fontana in February. Undefeated in February races at Fontana. Roush is also undefeated in night races at Homestead.

That's three consecutive Roush wins and of tracks banked 14 degrees or higher. they have won five consecutive races.

We may be seeing 36 Roush Ford wins . . . one team wins all 36 races? This is looking like we'll see one juggernaut. Next week is the Shelby 427 and this is another Roush parade historically.

Once again, for the third consecutive Sprint Cup race, the Mazda Atenza wins. Last year, Toyota and Mazda dominated the sport; interestingly, the Atenza is raced in the US wearing its Mexican identity as the Ford Fusion; Mazda's Detroit plant builds Atenazs as the Mazda6.

Congrats to Matty!

That's MY GUY!!!

Way to Go MATT!!!

I think karma is coming back for Matt this year..

He had so much "Bad Luck" last year...But he just stays so centerd...

Few Drivers are as in touch with their car as Matt Kenseth is...

He makes a lot of his own calls on the pits...

WOW!!....What a start to 2009!!

Kevin Harvick has an engine failure . . . the late Herman Beam's record is safe again after being threatened with just three races remaining.

Clint Bowyer (75 races) is now threatening Beam's no-DNF streak of 84 races (1961-63). If Bowyer goes to Darlington and doesn't score a DNF through the Rebel 500, he ties the record; the 600 could become Bowyer's record-setter.

My official stance if anyone asks. Boo Matt Kenseth, I don't want to see him win anything.

Ask me off the books though, and I'll tell you the truth. ;) The only reason I don't want to see him win is because I can't stand Rousch racing, and when Jack gets a win it makes the baby Jesus cry. I was happier than hell for Matt last week when he won Daytona, but I was just as upset the Jack got his long sought-after 500 win.

Matt seems like a stand up guy, and he's obviously a great racer. Anytime he wants to drive a Childress car, we'd be happy to have him. Hell, we'll even throw in Casey Mears free. :)

Five Toyotas -- Kyle Busch, Ambrose, Reutimann, Speed, and Vickers -- will all be sent to the rear for engine changes. There is a rash of Toyota engine failures that has become very prevalent among the Hinomaru camp.

Lee White of Toyota said we had added more power to the engine and it caused oil pressure and wear on the cam shaft and lifter.

He also said that the teams wanted to get the most speed by putting ice water on the engine before qualifying, along with using hot oil.

Hmm. This is interesting.

BTW, Kyle's blow up yesterday was a head gasket issue and was not Toyota's fault, rather it was a Gibbs problem.

Hmm. This is interesting.

That's got to be hard on an engine... impose a lot of thermal stresses not normally incurred.

I thought I posted this on Monday :eh:

Gordon said to Joe Gibbs after the race "When the car is right, he's never seen in the history of this sport. He's never seen anybody as good as Kyle." That was very nice of Gordo.

I note that Kyle does well with a loose, neutral or tight car too. He doesn't need a perfect car as we have seen over the years. Another thing that I like Kyle is that he hangs out with his crew and works on his car.

Kyle said, "We were so loose, but we ran those guys down and caught them. At least we didn't win it by coming off pit road first, actually drove by guys."

Now, who could he mean? Methinks he's jabbing the 48 team, king of pit stall racing.

Speaking of Chad, he was on This Week in Nascar with Waltrip and they were awesome. Informational and funny.

Woo hoo, most of the states have saving time, so change your clocks

Truex has a kidney stone but he will race today

The tires for Atlanta are ok by the drivers, however, grip isn't very good

Johnson isn't blaming beard (IMO he looks better without it)

Chevy drivers hopeful GM can avoid bankruptcy for consumers, sport (don't worrry, Obama will save the day )

Dale Jr. lashes out at new car (he's noticing now?)

Obama won't save the day for the Bowtie -- I think Hendrick, Childress, and a few other dealers might just buy them out of bankruptcy and reorganise in a stronger way.

Obama wants us in 2-seat microcars.

Damn that 2 car is strong... just when it was beginning to look like Gordo may have the race in hand.

I gotta say... Kurt Busch is off my **** list. He has reformed himself and paid his penance, and he and his team have worked very hard to come back this season. I don't think he is quite the driver his little brother is, but he is perfectly capable of winning with the right car.

... not that I want him to beat Gordon today. Jeff has come oh so close every week to breaking that spell. Let's hope he gets that out of the way with a win today.

Poor Martin, that car has trouble in each race so far. Hope it will get better.

What in the heck is going on with Mark Martin!? :wall: Is Rick buying Mark's equiptment from Big Lots or something? He had the pole today for pete's sake. The man knows how to drive the car, but yet has had car trouble in every race so far this season? If Hendricks doesn't do something about this quick, I am going to be one ****ed off redneck, Bible-thumping, NASCAR watchin, conservative lady.

Well, a cut tire is an unfortunate happening, but the guy can't get any good luck. Hang in, it has to get better. :shifty:

NASCAR ejected the #47 person who ran across the track to retrieve the errant tire upon the caution. Now that's a penalty -- ejection of crew member. I've seen drivers ejected from races for rough driving, now a mechanic is ejected for going out of bounds into a dangerous area.

Ejected for how long?

What they ought to do is make him run a gauntlet of all the drivers who went a lap down because of his bonehead action. That one act screwed the day for at least a dozen cars.

A bit of histrionics from WHB.

"Watts was suspended from competition for the remainder of the afternoon by NASCAR for "putting himself in harm's way," according to NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp. The teams adversely affected by the incident simply were left to deal with the unexpected setback as best they could."

NASCAR laid the law down on the #47 team.

Jimmy Watts (Fueler) - Four race suspension
Frank Kerr (Crew chief) - On probation for rest of season.

Watts' penalty relates to NASCAR Article 9, Rule 15, Paragraph U -- "crew members must not go on the race track for any reason while the cars are racing or while the cars are running under the yellow flag or the red flag, unless otherwise directed to do so by a NASCAR official."

Watts was ejected from the race promptly after the infraction, and was suspended four races. In hockey lingo, he received a "match penalty" of the game misconduct and the four races.

Kerr's penalty relates to Article 9, Rule 4, Paragraph A, which states the crew chief is responsible for the actions of his team.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Jimmy Watts, a crew member for the No. 47 team in the Sprint Cup Series, has been suspended from the next four races (until April 22) for rule violations during this past Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Watts was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 9-15-U (crew members must not go on the race track for any reason while the cars are racing or while the cars are running under the yellow flag or the red flag, unless otherwise directed to do so by a NASCAR official). Watts has also been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

In addition, Frank Kerr, crew chief for the No. 47, has been placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 for violating Sections 12-1 and 9-4-A (crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of the team).

That sounds like a fair penalty. NASCAR would have seen the tire and thrown the caution (and in fact, the caution may have already been waving by the time the flagman saw Watts - I didn't get a good shot of both at the same time on the TV), and then NASCAR would have sent TRAINED safety personnel out there to remove the tire.

One wreck in the frontstretch and they'd have been minus one crew member PERMANENTLY instead of for just four races.

Traffic soars on Hendrickcars.com after Stewart's win (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=526386)

March 11, 2009

By Michael Smith
Special to the Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

The tired NASCAR axiom of "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" has been outdated for the past decade, if not longer, but the executives who run Rick Hendrick's NASCAR team and auto dealerships brought it back to life last month at Daytona.

Hendrickcars.com, the website that aggregates all of the used cars at Hendrick's 80 dealerships, was the sponsor on Tony Stewart's winning car at the season-opening Nationwide Series race. Not only did Stewart's car lead much of the race and capture the checkered flag, Stewart also mentioned the site in his postrace interview on Fox.

The visibility from Stewart's win, combined with the quick turn-around for website traffic, returned blockbuster results for Hendrick Automotive Group's flagship website.

On the day of the race, Saturday, Feb. 14, the site's total unique visitors numbered 53,000, an increase of 6,424 percent over the previous Saturday. Total visits were up more than 5,000 percent, and the 1.2 million page views were up more than 2,000 percent.

From the period of Feb. 11 through Feb. 28, the site received 151,655 unique visits, compared with an average of 40,000 visits for a typical month. Sales directly related to the sponsorship won't be available for another month.

"It wowed us, it really did," said Chris Little, a director in Hendrick Automotive Group. "We were expecting about a 1,000 percent increase in our traffic and the numbers that came back just blew our mind. The combination of winning the race and all of the marketing we had behind this, it was the perfect storm."

That's old-school racing. Dale Senior 20 years did a one-day "all cars on sale at dealer cost" at his dealership in Newton, NC, after winning the First Union 400.

And Stewart is probably one of the best at the phrase. When Stewart drove for Joe Gibbs in 2005, in the middle of his fence-climbing antics, Home Depot ran discounts in the newspaper -- win the race, get 10% off certain home improvement equipment (bricks, fences, ladders, et al).

Local sponsors do this tactic to promote their drivers.

SAD NEWS -- one of NASCAR's great drivers has died. North Haverhill, NH driver Stanley (Stub) Fadden was 75. Talk about racing . . . he ran 11 years in the Camping World East starting at 54. For a good part of that career he raced alongside grandson Mike Olson.

The Sprint All-Star Race XXV poster was unveiled at a press conference today. It looks like a combat sport poster:

Saturday Night, May 16 Sprint All-Star Race XXV
All-Star Slugfest. A night of fractured fenders and ****tered dreams.

Kevin "Happy" Harvick vs "Cousin" Carl Edwards
Transmission Submission Match: Dale "The People's Champ" Earnhardt Jr vs Tony "Smoke" Stewart

Also Featuring Intercontinental Roll Cage Match
Kurt "Vegas Violator" Busch and Clint "The Destroyer" Bowyer vs Kasey "Night Train" Kahne and "Marvelous" Mark Martin

Grudge Match
Kyle "Rowdy" Busch vs Just About Everybody

One thing I didn't like was the Rowdy reference. I would have said "Wild Thing". "Rowdy" is his tribute to Bobby Hamilton Sr that he did three years ago at SASR XXII when he painted a truck like Hamilton's Days of Thunder car as a tribute to the cancer-stricken driver.

Five teams were clearly in the "start and park" mode in today's Nationwide race -- having dropped out after less than ten minutes of green flag racing - one was from a legitimate team:

02 - Corrie Stott Racing (22 laps, "rear end")
91 - MSRP Motorsports (20 laps, "rear end")
90 - MSRP Motorsports (10 laps, "brakes", exempt team)
10 - Braun Racing (5 laps, "brakes"; #32 and #38 are legitimate)
0 - Davis Racing (2 laps, "vibration"; #01 is usually legitimate)

At least this race wasn't a cluster like the Daytona w/Jr taking out many of the best drivers (Kyle, Kurt, Carl, Denny, Jimmie, Jamie, Speed, Vickers) and RAIN.

5 races:
Matt Kenseth - 2 wins
Kyle Busch - 2 wins
Kurt Busch - 1 win

And Marky didn't have anything go wrong.

Gee, stoopid NASCAR hasn't updated on the Stats. It is STILL showing the stats for March 8?

Official Sprint Cup points are not released until Monday, when post-race inspection, penalties, and other confirmations are sent, so official points results are then announced.

Jeff Gordon may be leading, but Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch are tied for the top seed currently. Gordon's problem is Impala Nation has been silenced this year.

Ted Christopher, a Northern Invader, takes home checkers for the Mod Squad in Concord Speedway. There is a North and a South division for the Whelen Modified Tour (sometimes referred by hardcore race fans as the "Mod Squad"), and the North Division driver went South and scored the victory in the first Whelen Southern Modified Tour race of the season. The Whelen Modified Tour (North) doesn't start for a few more weeks.

The Northern-based Camping World East tour also doesn't start for a few more weeks either, with a 150-lap race in Greenville (CL) April 11.

http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Mods_WSMT/Post_Concord_3-23.html

A Pennsylvania driver who usually races in the United Speed Alliance Racing series (USAR) may face additional penalties after being disqualified following qualifying for Saturday's Nationwide Series race; that driver had illegal fuel in the car. NASCAR is checking the fuel further to ensure it was not intentional use of illegal fuel additives, but rather it was a different fuel that had not been drained out. That team usually races in the USAR, which uses composite bodies and old Cup/Nationwide cars. If NASCAR finds just USAR fuel, no severe fines would be implemented; if NASCAR finds illegal fuel additives, there is a penalty.

In 1986, Geoff Bodine had his time disallowed and the Hendrick Motorsports team had to requalify on the second day at Pocono when his pole-winning time was disallowed because of illegal fuel; the car had been testing at a track where the NASCAR fuel (Union 76 at the time) was not available, and they had used another brand. In 1996, Darrell Waltrip had time disallowed at Martinsville in a Truck race when he had tested his truck at a track where Sunoco racing fuel (not used until 2004) was sold, and remnants of the Sunoco were found at the track. (Truck rules at the time stated the fuel sold at the speedway was the only fuel to be used at the track; during races run with Cup weekends, the 76 leaded racing 108 was the only fuel permitted; current NASCAR rules require the same unleaded 98-octane Sunoco Racing Gasoline to be used for all 136 races of NASCAR's three national touring series.)
