Montoya takes the lead

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 2:49 pm
He's depressed . . .

well.....he needs to adapt his driving....that's what his dad was really good at.
Dale senior would totally change his driving style when he had a bad or mediocre car, and still would finish about 10th

junior has kept trying to race along the wall, and not adapt to what the COT will do.
the best thing he could do is take a break for a bit.

He's got the talent, but his thinking isn't right....he's got to adapt to the car, and has to stop trying to force the car to do what it can't do

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 2:51 pm
Montoya takes the lead

yep....wonder how long it will last.
Betcha Jimmie makes him burn his tires and brakes up, by faking a lot of passes.

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 4:27 pm
Denny to the lead.....

jimmie a little crummy off the corners now...

dale jr blew another RF tire.....
pitted, no problem...probably lost 2 laps

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 4:38 pm

I think nascar ought to at least warn both to quit using the bumpers

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 4:43 pm
00 and 14 are gonna have to pit soon for fuel...

the rest of the field will have to pit about 15 laps or so later

spinach

spinach
October 25th, 2009, 5:13 pm
there aren't many cars on the lead lap-- 19
some are taking tires....

interesting....
that may work for a great finish
however, I think there will be more cautions and it will be counterproductive

Xena

well he was right....
the caution should have come out the moment there was a guy on the straight not moving

NASCAR put the guy in danger....bigtime
safety is supposed to come first.

This is an absurd call. Chad was right and unfortunately, this is that "GWC rule" where officials try to finish this race without the race-ending yellow. If the pre-2004 CWTS rule of "caution during GWC or white flag results in another GWC" was in play, that would have meant another.

Yep... at very least it prevented anyone from spreading out to make a dash for the line. The fact that nobody did tells us that the spotters did their jobs and told their drivers to stay high.

Martinsville is always paint-trading entertaining, but I hope somebody puts both Montoya and cousin Carl into the wall at Talladega next week. Carl in particular should "get his" for what he did to Kyle; I am quite surprised that Kyle kept his cool and did not reciprocate for what was an overt and completely out of line action by Carl. Montoya was merely driving aggressively and was impatient with Gordon, but the gall of him to accuse Jeff of being the aggressor. For that he should get nailed next week too.

Notice Montoya was also crying about JJ "speeding" on pit road. Well Juan... if Jimmie was not within the rules NASCAR would have penalized him... so shut the **** up!

Martinsville is breaking its nearly 47-year association with Ridgeway, and later, Howard Miller. Howard Miller shutting down the Martinsville clock plant means a new manufacturer will be called to produce the signature trophies at the circuit.

I would agree his chances are greatly increased if he does not wreck at Talladega, but don't think he cannot be wrecked at Texas, Phoenix and Homestead. Unless Mark, Jeff, Tony and Juan all wreck (or have a serious problem) in one of the next three races, the determination of the champion will go down to the last race.

In NASCAR "cheating without getting caught" is part of the game. Case in point is that Jimmy (and I'm sure, Chad) has figured out he can accelerate from a stop to beyond pit road speed then tromp on the breaks before he gets to the timing line and average pit road speed from a standing start. That is what Juan was complaining about last week... but it is perfectly legal as the rules are set up. Taking the rules to the absolute limit is not cheating; it is smart.

Not about speeding on pit lane. If you look at the penalties on Jayski, it goes on . . . and on. And if you push, you will be caught, sometime. Some get through. My point is, if a team get a championship it should be without being tainted. More so when it could be four championships back to back.

As far as I am concerned, cutting it as close to the rules (when doing so gains you an advantage) is what being a championship team is all about in NASCAR. The level of competition is so tight that even gaining 0.01 second per lap will greatly increase your chances of scoring well.

The only thing that taints success for me is nasty driving habits... doing things like what Carl did to Kyle last week or even Juan beating on Jeff's doors for no apparent reason other than he does not like to be passed, are unacceptable. Jeff, Mark and Jimmie are three of the most respectful drivers out there (while also not being easily intimidated...) which is why I like to see them win. If Jimmie wins the championship again this year, it will not be because he or Chad cheated... it will because they are very very good at what they do.

... and I love you too; even when you are wrong. ;)

because of restrictor plates, I hate the talladega race
it's more a crapshoot than it is a race.

the restrictor plates bunch the field up too much
they should take them away and just require a lot lower gears
that way teams aren't robbed of power, and also would come up to speed a lot quicker-- and then teams would have to use rev limiters.
those who choose to abuse the engine more would go faster-- but at the expense of possibly blowing up

"restrictor plates" is a stupid idea

a lot of times the winner of the race is just the one who happens to pick the right place to be to draft correctly-- and depends very little on skill, or car, but mostly on dumb luck.

with no restrictor plates, it would put it back on the car and driver

the thing about pit road speed is to protect the crews.

the reason for the rule is why Jimmie should not have been speeding
nascar needs to change the rules to prevent this

use much narrower timing grids- so that speeding gets caught every time- no matter where you are on pit road.
sure, what he did was legal, but it was manipulation of the rules, and could have hurt someone.

finding loopholes is not in the interest of the sport

the restrictor plates bunch the field up too much
they should take them away and just require a lot lower gears
that way teams aren't robbed of power, and also would come up to speed a lot quicker-- and then teams would have to use rev limiters.
those who choose to abuse the engine more would go faster-- but at the expense of possibly blowing up

"restrictor plates" is a stupid idea

a lot of times the winner of the race is just the one who happens to pick the right place to be to draft correctly-- and depends very little on skill, or car, but mostly on dumb luck.

with no restrictor plates, it would put it back on the car and driver

restrictor plates or not.............Dega is still full tilt exitement.

I believe the Edwards wreck would have killed many fans had he been going faster.

I was right there in the stands 3 rows from the track and 100 feet from the wreck and the car was very very very very very close to being in the stands.

They did increase the fence hight by 8 feet I believe since the spring race.

Well in about 1 hour I will drive to Talladega and have seats very close to the start finish and am soooooooooooo ready for the thrill of Talladega.

Been napping all day will drive through the night ,eat breakfast at about 6 and git to da track.
The hotels up there get all they can with a 3 night minimum........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

GOOOOOOOO Jeff Gordon!!!!!!!

Yesterday in practice there was whining, "leave me alone" from two.

Gordon suddenly slowed and jumped out of line in the middle of a large pack of cars, setting off a chain-reaction. Mark Martin smacked Dale Earnhardt Jr., and at the same time, Sam Hornish Jr., Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer wound up making contact, with Hornish and Bowyer getting the worst of things.

Greg Biffle was an eyewitness.

"I think [Gordon] got bumped out of line or decided to quit or something going into the corner and everybody got bunched up," Biffle said. "I hit the brakes and I got clipped in the left rear. It did a little bit of body damage, but then I looked in the mirror and they were wrecking behind us, so we're not real sure what happened there."

Michael Waltrip wound up second-fastest, but also ran afoul of NASCAR officials' pleas to be less aggressive with bump-drafting and was ordered to the garage area for a short time. The reason? Mikey bumped the 48.

Brad pushed Jimmie, and JJ was not amused. He was trailing brakes, not driving like normal.

Should the rest of the drivers should part the "water" for them? I think NOT. And IMO, a lot of this is because of the stinking Chase.

so what do the nascar dumbasses do?

use an even smaller restrictor plate. their thinking? make the car slower top speed
the new plate is 1/16 less diameter on each of the 4 holes
the effect should rob about 50-80 horsepower from last year
which would put the cars at around 400 hp

the actual effects:

less drivers will 'lift', because the car will now lake longer to come back to speed
cars will be bunched up
aerodynamics will be even more hellish that it already is
drivers will have to be more aggressive to pass

and what does this mean?

a lot more crashes and lot more angry fans as their drivers get wrecked early.

Nascar maxed out on dumbass this time.
I hate this race

I hope all the guys come home safe, and no fans get hurt
although if a few nascar officals got a 'tap' from a car, I wouldn't mind.

The better way to slow the cars down is lower gears.
If you set a ratio to where it takes 10,500 rpm to go 200, you would have the right idea.
that way with rev limiters at about 9400, the cars only go about 190 top end

and with the lower gears, the cars would come up to speed quick, and passing after braking would be no problem

spinach
November 1st, 2009, 12:59 pm
this is cool-- the girl who got hurt the last race here, Blake ....something...
is at the race as the formal guest of the speedway, and got to meet all the drivers.

Carl Edwards [whose car disintegrated into the fence, to hurt the girl], gave her an official team jacket that he signed

I think those jackets go for about $1200 or so these days.

I bet the girl has gotten a lot of goodies from nascar and the speedway.

The IRL uses a rev limiter (10,400 RPM) and six forward gears. Maybe NASCAR needs to consider switching from the current 4-speed gearboxes to 6-speed boxes.

Going to a single-barrel fuel injection system would also be a good idea.

NASCAR warned drivers today no bump drafting in the turns or tri-oval. But NASCAR needs to adopt the IRL's One Move Per Straight rule.

But the real story might be what happened at Daytona. Kyle Busch's two moves on Tony Stewart (which would be illegal in the IRL) led to the crazy crash at the end. Had Busch let Stewart pass and lost just 2-3 positions instead of the 10-12 positions he did, Kyle Busch would have made the Chase. Busch missed by eight points at the end of the regular season.

Busch may have learned a lesson in that crash by thinking "if I had just let him by and lost 2-3 positions instead, I would made the Chase."

Remember, the race starts at 12:19 PM CST and will be the first race with the new 2010 rule. The last three races all start around 3 PM EST.

And we're headed to the first round of pit stops for half the field that did not stop on Lap 6, then followed 3-4 laps later by the other half, so it's virtually neutralised. They're preparing for pit stops as we're coming to the hundred-mile mark.

The fans who have the scanners are probably listening to more action inside than watching this race outside. But as Mad Max tells his friends in Italy, Sprint Cup racing is a mix of endurance racing with the mind games and rally racing with the sliding and driving tactics needed. What we're seeing now is the 24 Hours of Talladega, with drivers in an endurance race mode.

And you see why fans love to pick up the scanners and listen to their favourite drivers. They're getting comedy at the track by listening to their heroes talk while playing chess. Some of these drivers are probably sizing up each other right now. Nobody's flinching.

Everyone wants to be the Silver Fox right now.

the "racing" in the past few laps was largely due to some teams trying to get down on the inside, to pit
and because some cars had already pitted, the leaders caught them and had to go around them.

Looking at my scorebook for most laps run today between stops . . .

Cars pitted: Lap 52 (after 2- Kurt Busch spin)
Restarted: Lap 55
Next pit: Laps 92-99.

The maximum number of laps: 42-47 laps.

This restart will be interesting. Some drivers could make it on fuel, some cannot. The scorebook says this race could go down to who takes fuel and who does not. We could see some more cars pit on the one to go signal to take extra fuel before the restart to see if they can make it to the end on their 18.5 gallons of Sunoco 260 GT.

spinach
November 1st, 2009, 3:39 pm
if it were me, I'd pit as soon as the window for it opens...
that way you don't have to stop any more

and a couple of cautions after you pit gives you opportunity to close back up if you get shuffled back

since there isn't much bump drafting, no one is gonna get away from anyone
so it's all about picking a draft spot.

which means, it's probably about 75% luck and 25% car plus driver

we could easily get a "surprise winner" in this race.

may have to use the hydraulic jaws to cut the car open.
