another one not ethereal, but definately sweet and melancholy:

"The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmtVipC_-kk&feature=related

BTW, I'm not really a big ABBA fan, but these two tunes stayed with me back in the days of my darkest melancholia as I reflected upon the breakup of my first marriage.

another tune not particularly ethereal, but sweet and melancholy:

a tune I found and held close a few years after my breakup with my first wife.

Okay, I've definately strayed from the ethereal, on a jag about my ex-wife...

"The Things I Used To Do" by Stevie Ray Vaughn

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3N1DbLi0A4

I raged around the house 20 years ago with this song in my head, contempating my soon-to-be-ex wife.

Funny thing...

when I put up this thread, I wasn't thinking about my ex-wife at all.

Funny how stuff can come back up like that.

I hardy ever think about her nowadays, and it's been that way for many years.

But I guess I gotta admit... I still miss her.

Love your music choices. Love this thread title. "Sweet Ethereal Tunes For The Troubled Soul (http://forums.hannity.com/showthread.php?p=32719271#post32719271)"

The Heart of the Matter is a terrific song for this topic.

Some music actually reduces the stress hormone called cortisol and increases the endorphines that support the immune system.

Next to the time I spend at the ocean and my faith of course,my music and the laughter and good talks I share with my friends and family are my soul replenishers.

Not so ethereal but whenever I think of my ex wife there is only one artist and album that is appropriate.

Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails

With lyrics like"heaven's just a rumor she dispels as she walks me through the nicest parts of hell" its the perfect album to listen to whenever you think about an ex.

when I think of my exhusband, there can only be one sweet and ethereal tune that comes to mind....

by Phil Collins /In the Air tonight

Well, if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
Ive seen your face before my friend
But I dont know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been
Its all been a pack of lies

What a great tune!

I don't understand why nobody in here likes Meryl Streep.

Sure, she ain't got a professional singing voice,

but I'd love to have her sing to me in her sweet croaky voice.

In case you missed it, I have a thang for Meryl Streep:

Scenes from a movie I'm not familiar with, set to a wonderfully melancholy tune.

It's amazing how the video effectively conveys the entire span of a love affair in two minutes or less.

I always get goose bumps towards the end with the swelling strings.

Curious that you think we might live too long.

Yeah, the accumulated memories can be painful, but I can deal with that.

And I sorta think I might finally get things right if I had another 50 years to have a crack at it. Enought time to get things right and make amends to all those whom I've failed or otherwise disappointed in my life.

I was impressed with your juxtaposition of ABBA with more classical works, I imagine it might be the ultimate compliment for a Swedish pop group to be mentioned in the same breath as Mozart.

A paean to your classical side and something Finnish for your ABBA fixation...

Your quick wit is missed in WP, though I understand why you might spend less time there as opposed to here. Here the sense of camaraderie and community overcomes the base need to finish off the weak when there's blood in the water.

There are subjects I generally avoid on the boards and discussions of our unique and irreplaceable nature in a universe seemingly constructed to deeply wound us for trading animal instinct for human memory is on that list. There are few places to discuss those issues and, perhaps, the subject matter might be a bit dark for a political forum.

I also imagine my demons are hardly the stuff of compelling reading...

That's an absolutely gorgeous piece of music!

Thanks for sharing it, M. I'd never heard it before. And the accompanying video is wonderous.

I remember being familiar with some of Sibelius's work from back in the days when I was a music major (35 years ago), but I can't for the life of me remember what they were. Maybe I am indeed outliving myself.

You know when you listen to Heavy Metal...especially Randy Rhoads or Metallica...some of the true metal guys...if you slow there solos down, and take away the distortion...it's classical...A lot of those guys studied classical guitar.

So true. Metallica's lyrics and music, especially the S&M album..live with the San Francisco Symphony..from which my previous two posts/links come..is some of the best music ever written. Michael Kamen, the deceased director of the SFS compared Hatfield's music to Mozart and Beethoven..stating "His (Hatfield's) scores are more difficult to play, more complex, and arguably more beautiful than most of what the "great" composers have written. I'm honored to be chosen to direct this event, and awed by his depth."

Many of the SFS classical musicians expressed the same sentiments.

S&M is a live album by the American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) heavy metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music) band Metallica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallica), recorded live with the San Francisco Symphony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Symphony) on April 21-22 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_21) of 1999 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999) at Berkeley Community Theatre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Community_Theatre).

It probably don't get much more country than that.

A little bit of trivia.

Did you know that is the only song to get the CMA Song of the Year award 2 years in a row?

But, I thin this would be the greatest C&W song ever written. ;)

I remember listening to these tunes with my girlfriend

on a balmy overcast afternoon,

the bedroom curtains stirred by a gentle breeze...

When I was in high school I loved a girl...we all did right? Unless you are a girl then you loved a boy...well some of you may have loved a girl, and that's ok too.

But this was something extra special...I would have married this girl in a heartbeat, and she would have married me.

Unfortunately, after the death of one of our close friends we chose different paths, she got saved and became a devout Christian...I chose to turn to drugs and alcohol...she said she'd be there when I got my self straigtened out, but you know how it goes. Two years later when I was saved it was too late, she'd already met someone and was engaged to be married.

Every time I hear this song it reminds me of her...it was our song.
