Everyone has 'em. Words that people say that make you cringe. There may not be any reason, or anything particularly unusual or offensive about the word, but something about it makes you cringe. What word(s) have that effect on you?

I'll Start.

Along similar lines, I'd have to say I hate the word "mouth-piece". Too much usage in the last few years, makes me think of a retainer.

moot- Subject to discussion (originally at a moot); arguable, debatable, not settled.

My most hated is "quote, unquote" then what a person wants to quote. If you write it out it looks like this

"..." then the statement being quoted, the proper way is to say Quote (the statement you are quoting) close quote.

Get it right people!!

If you say "quote unquote" you are not quoting anything...nada...zip...zero...

<stepping off soapbox now>

Can I quote, unquote you on that?

I've gotten tired of the word "actually". Can you possibly overuse a word anymore?

Why yes, as a matter of fact, you can. If any of you are golfers and enjoy watching it on T.V., count the number of times the announcers use the word "perfect". Drives me out of my mind.:wall: The object of golf is to put the ball into the hole. Any shot that fails to do that is, by definition, NOT perfect!!! Then, when someone actually (It's appropriate here.:snooty:) does make a miraculous shot which ends up in the hole, they use every word in the dictionary EXCEPT the appropriate one, perfect. :wall:

For some reason, the word "irk" bothers me

when it's used as a verb in a sentence.

And I just now realize that I'm not too fond of the word "irony".

I like the concept but I don't like the way it sounds.

The pairing was intentional...

comes under the heading "Subtile Humor". ;)

BTW, the word "subtile" bothers me...

looks funny in written form,

sounds funny in pronunciation,

and what's the point of using subtilety anyways?

when ya end up havin' to beat somebody over the head after all. :wall:

Subtile is a real word though. I googled it but didn't think it was what you meant.

subtile

1. Thin; not dense or gross; rare; as, subtile air; subtile vapor; a subtile medium.

2. Delicately constituted or constructed; nice; fine; delicate; tenuous; finely woven. "A sotil [subtile] twine's thread." "More subtile web Arachne can not spin." (Spenser) "I do distinguish plain Each subtile line of her immortal face." (Sir J. Davies)

A grouping of words that bother me is:

"It goes without saying."

Why do people say that and then invariably go ahead and say the thing that goes without saying?

Ahhh...

So "subtle" was apparently derived from the older English "subtile"...

so I wasn't that far off.

In either form, the word still sucks. ;)
