So I finally broke down and started a myspace page. This is my first semi-webpage and it is kinda fun, or addicting at least. Anyone else here have a myspace?

Heck no. The amount of spam, ID theft and sexual predators is enough to keep me off of it.

Please, please monitor what he does on that website. I've heard such horrible, horrible stories about it. Hopefully he knows never to give out personal information.

I agree that people (especially kids) should be careful with it, and definitely avoid providing personal information. But I have no problem putting up the schools I attended, my hometown, my current location, and age. Not too much people can do with that...

My daughter uses MySpace.com (she's 15). I keep her page on my list of favorite addresses and I check it all the time to see what she posts there, to make sure she doesn't give out info she shouldn't and also I see what her friends write to her, gives me a different way to check on her and them and see what they are up to.

I would never ley my child divulge the amount of personal information that you find in these myspace pages. Its a virtual directory for predators.

Not to mention even the kids are misusing sites like myspace: http://www.syracuse.com/news/poststandard/index.ssf?/base/news-3/1141898206251740.xml&coll=1

It all comes down to parenting and knowing what your kids are up to.... Obviously the parents of these "cyber bullies" have other priorities ahead of parenting...

It actually started as a place for bands to hook up. I'm a producer and I do a lot of work with bands. I stay in touch and meet a lot of them on MySpace. Obviously, I have a page however I don't know if I should give it out here. I thought about having a link in my sig but - I have some of my work up there and I don't know if I should post that info here.

He has one, and I checked his site out...he doesn't have bad things posted, nor does he chat with anyone but people he knows from school, or places we have lived. I haven't checked mine out. All I know is my son asked me what song do I like. Oh gosh so many to choose from. I couldn't think, then just picked a recent one. Myspace I'm Lera213. I have no idea what is on there.

again offtopic and really geeky but I gotta...

Roberts was a fluke last year, he got more contact which is understandable, but also he got much, much, more power (Slugging% jumps 150 points in one season? Please.). He'll have to have a repeat of last year's stats if he wants to sell me.

Plus when you look at his production in the first half compared to the second half, the production dropped astronomically going from bonefide all-star to the same old Brian Roberts.

The injuries played a large part in that....But I do agree, he needs to come back and have a good year to really prove himself. He just took his first swing since surgery last week, so look for him to start slowly, but pick it up as the season goes on...The best part about him is he's also a down to earth team guy who is really nice and respects the game and the town he plays in.

People are getting hysterical about myspace - look at how many tens of thousands of people use it. Like anything you just have to be sensible.

But I have to wonder how "innocent" children are. Do a search on there and you will see the majority of young teenage girls with photos posted which frankly make them look like sluts.

Of course I am not saying they deserve anything to happen to them but dont be fooled into thinking they are all so innocent.

I just have to wonder where their parents are. Why let a kid have a PC in their own room - that is asking for trouble. Why let your childspend hours at a time in front of it?

Myspace is not the problem the parents are.

You can find out what city I live in, whoopee (if I provide that info)....you can find out where I work (again, if I pprovide that) big deal

Noone has to enter a credit card # or Social security # or anything else along those lines.

I'm not saying it couldn't pose some danger, especially to teens who might be willing to provide more info than they should, and who might be willing to talkt to strangers when others (like myself) usually just delete that type of stuff...

I have a myspace page -soley- to assist in efforts to track down online sexual predators and turn them over to the authorities.

Just in the last few days, the US Navy has convicted a sailor from the USS Nassau for attempting to solicit who he thought was a 12 year old girl for sex. When his myspace accounts (yes, he had MULTIPLE accounts) were uncovered and examined, it was noted that he had SEVERAL underage females as his "friends". Many, many of the pedophiles busted by PeeJ or CPIU frequent Myspace and/or Xanga. Where there are children - and particularly where those children have a chance of being unsupervised - there will be pedophiles circling like sharks in the water.

Please, parents. Understand and be aware of what your children are doing on the internet. There are MANY, MANY kinds of software out there that will help you track and monitor exactly what your child is doing on the internet - right down to the exact keystrokes they are typing. If you allow your child to have a Xanga or Myspace page, make sure you know their username and password, and CHECK UP ON THEM frequently. Monitor who is on their "friends" list. Look at their messages. Go look at the myspace pages of their friends, see who their friends are. If you are in doubt about ANYTHING, shut it down completely. Delete the account.

Be careful, be vigilant, and be realistic. Nothing less than the health, safety and well-being of your child is at stake.

I have one I play with sometimes.

I got it to watch my daughter and her "friends", OK let's say peers. Others my daughter's age expose more of their real selves than what we might see at sporting events and out in public. If they are fools enough to organize an underage drinking party or sneaking away from her home for trouble in online sessions, we can see them for who they truly are. We have turned her away from several "potential friends". Later some of those "friends" have been caught in substantially worse troubloe than was suggested by their MySpace posts.

I was an independant ISP for 6 years and know of the dangers. My daughter's site is not perfect but she is not an easy target.

One day I looked at her MSN profile and showed her what possible scenerio could play out. I knew her friends from their postings. Some gave names and phone numbers!!! At any rate I told her I knew she was interested in certain sports, had her picture as well as some of her friends'. I knew about what time she would be at school. I new the group of kids to watch for. Say I go to the nearby fair where only she and one other would be walking around. All I have to do is mix in the crowd, wait for them to go to an opportine location where I could have nearby cover, and grab her while her friend is not looking.
It scared her.

I plan to survey the local kids' sites with my daughter, gather information, and send, possibly anonymously, a list of things I know to their parents.

Many parents don't look, and trust their kids.

I liken myspace to the forest or a rough urban area. Who would allow a child into the forest alone? I will first teach the child what a snake and other dangers are and what to do to avoid them. Eventually they could be trusted alone but even adults get into trouble in those places. This is a new, different kind of jungle!

Watch your kids!

I think parents need to have more control of their children.
INDEED! At the same time, though, I still think there are some parents who just don't "get it" - they think because there's a two monitors and miles of wires between their "baby" and a predator, that their kid is "safe". Unfortunately, that's far from the truth. Parents cannot afford to assume that because Junior or Juniorette is sitting in their house, that they must be safe. An unsupervised internet connection (whether it's unsupervised because of ignorance or laziness is irrelevant) is like an open, unguarded door into your home.

It's disgusting how many parents think it's okay for children to talk to adults online!
What's even more disgusting is how many adults think it's OK to go online to talk to children...Seriously, some of the stories about how predators "groom" their targets and then snare them would curl your toenails.

I've been trolling for predators online, and you'd be amazed at some of the "offers" I've had. I've had guys offer to transport me across state lines, to let me move in with them, and three very tasty characters (to date) have offered to set me up in kiddie prostitution. And you know how long it takes predators to find me? On average? Less than 3 minutes from the time I sign in my underage trolling screen name to the first approach. I -never- have to approach anyone, and I don't because the organization for which I volunteer has very, very strict rules about how the trolling process works.

Believe it, people. These predators are OUT THERE, and they're slick, slimy, sophisticated, and they want YOUR child.
