I officially don't like my truck anymore. It's a 1984 Ford Bronco II and on the way up to Williams, AZ the alternator died.
It didn't totally strand me dead on the road, it limped up to a place called "Mund's Park" which is like Hillbilly Hell using the battery to fire the engine but I had no gauges, nothing but the speedometer worked anymore and I had to spend $200 at Cooter's Garage to get the alternator replaced.
The truck doesn't even have a Blue Book Value anymore, the Blue Book only goes back 20 years and when that truck dropped off the Blue Book three years ago it was only worth $500 so I spent half as much as the stupid truck was worth to get it repaired in Cooter's Garage.
I am definitely going to get a better vehicle. The one I've got has become unreliable and it's kind of embarrassing having the oldest vehicle in the parking lot everywhere I go.

135K miles which isn't bad for as old as it is but I don't really drive it that much given that I often drive a work truck as an on-call tech.
I'll probably pick up a regular 1/2 ton pickup truck. Those are cheap enough and for my transportation needs they're good enough.

Mr. Jet has a Chevy Silverado.....not bad but the gas mileage sucks. But it's one tough truck. What are you looking to get? Another Ford?

135K and 23 years? Wow......lucky you. Your commute must be short.
6.6 Miles from my driveway. I've been known to ride a bicycle to work. The bus is also an option and for me bus rides are free because I kinda work for 'em. I can ride buses all day long and just swipe the free employee pass in the card reader.
Not only is it basically a 13 mile round trip, but that truck only makes that trip about 8 times in your average month. The rest of the time I have a company vehicle because I'm on-call in case some 911 dispatch center goes kerplooey and I have to go fix it back up.
Basically the Bronco II gets 104 miles per month put on it plus whatever else I decide to go and do, and a tank of gas is basically good for 300 miles which means I fill it up about every six weeks or so. It gets pretty crummy mileage, about 15 MPG but for the amount it's driven I really don't feel the pinch of gas prices that much.
Mr. Jet has a Chevy Silverado.....not bad but the gas mileage sucks. But it's one tough truck. What are you looking to get? Another Ford?
I really don't know what kind I want. The Bronco II kind of freaked me out when the stick shift broke and I had to get a replacement for it. In that little misadventure I found out that my manual transmission in my "Ford" is actually made by MAZDA. Yes indeed, turns out that Ford Motor Company actually owns Mazda and they snuck in a Japanese transmission on my supposedly AMERICAN MADE TRUCK.
Not that it's a bad transmission, the unimesh design makes for easy gear shifting and I do like the feeling of throwing it into overdrive. I just thought I was buying American and it turns out to not be all that American at all.
I'm thinking something like a Toyota Tacoma, Chevy S-10, GMC Sonoma, Ford Ranger, or just your basic midsize 1/2 ton pickup. I don't need 4x4, I don't need anything bigger than a V-6 engine, and I don't need great fuel efficiency either.
I don't want to spend a whole lot of money either because of the way Arizona does vehicle registrations based on the value of the vehicle. They figure if you can afford a $30,000 car that you're ripe pickings for an $800 registration fee but if a car is like worthless like my Bronco II then it's about $25 per year for registration.
I've never agreed with that idea because I'd think somebody who gets a nice new fuel efficient car good for the environment and all doesn't deserve to be raked over the coals in registration/property tax and besides, they already paid their fair share in sales tax.
Florida does it right. They do it by vehicle curb weight. When I registered my Suzuki GS-450 motorcycle there it was like nothing, maybe $20 for a year's registration because the curb weight was like 420 pounds or so. It makes sense to me because if the idea is to recompense the government for the damage this vehicle does, then curb weight is directly proportional to the wear and tear the beast will put on the roads and the environment.
My GS-450 was hilarious on gas mileage. It was like 55 MPG even when I was romping on the throttle and gunning it off the line.
I got a ticket on that thing too. Apparently there's a rule that says you can't ride a motorcycle with the front tire off the ground. So I get this ticket and to keep the points off of my license, I have to go to traffic safety school. Of course, I ride the motorcycle to traffic safety school and the instructor asks the class who came to school without wearing their seat belt.
I've never seen a seat belt on a Suzuki GS-450 Motorcycle. I'm pretty sure they don't have one. So I raised my hand and admitted that I had, indeed, come to class without wearing a seat belt. However, I did have a DOT rated helmet on which was more than those other people in the class could say.

I think I want a Toyota too but I've never bought a Japanese vehicle unless you count my Suzuki GS-450 motorbike. I've always felt like I should buy American out of loyalty, ya know? I'm actually a bit patriotic, I'm a decorated wartime veteran and all and I do love this country with all my heart so buying foreign if there's domestic just as good as imports creates a conflict of interest.
But then, Ford threw a Mazda tranny in the Bronco II so even if I buy domestic, I'm buying import. Heck with it. Gene is getting a Toyota Tacoma.

Well, yeah, and who gets the sales tax on your import? Who does the work on it when it breaks? And well, your car very well may have been assembled here in the US or parts for it were shipped overseas. I used to feel that way.....and then I bought a Honda. I will never go back to an "American" car again as the Japanese just build them better. Plus, the upkeep is done here so I help out the economy either way.
