It's a cooling cleansing rain....it's good for you and the ground....so quit yer complaining.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/0723stormdamage0723.html

It drowned a HORSE this weekend. It rained so fiercely that it opened up a fissure in the ground, sucked in a horse and drowneded it. THAT is some bad rain. I don't think even Hurricane Katrina went and drowned no horse.

We've got people in Queen Creek trying to sell their houses before the rain destroys them. They're claiming the builder didn't tell them there might be flooding in the area.

Hello?!!?? You buy a house in a place named Queen CREEK and you need the builder to tell you water comes by every once in a while? What do these people think CREEK means? Do they come from some bizarro land where the word CREEK means "High and Dry" or what?

A few weeks ago it was hot, but it was a dry heat. Now we've still got the heat but the dry is history. It's like a sauna out here now. This weather ain't fit for a dog. Or a horse either for that matter.

It's a DESERT, not a dessert. There is no whipped cream involved.

There's no dealing with the rain when it hits. The dirt here is baked hard as a basketball court and about as absorbant.

Well..in the neighborhood I grew up in, which was mostly Italian with some Jews mixed in (I too am a mixture of the two).."Heim" was a slang word meaning Jew..so..depending on which heim you licked, your statement could be false..there were some damn fine heim chicks running the streets of Chi-town back then..I'm sure there still are.

I never heard that. I have heard the slur "Hymie" as used by the "Reverend" Jackson in reference to the Jewish population of NYC.

I guess I just never considered the roots of the word or that the spelling may have morphed.

I have been on a couple of occasions quite "smitten" with some sweet young Jewish lasses.

So, in that context, I certainly see your point.

Won't be at my "regular" place. They need to send dispatcher up into this:

Could be "fun". I sure as hell hope they get the mobile dispatch center hooked up FAR away from the front line!

Going to take my camera with me, so I "might" have some pictures when I get back tomorrow. But who can complain about 12 hour over time. Gotta pack some stuff and head out. Wish me luck.

Me: So what will I be doing.

Me: ummm
Supervisor: They want a Radio person (would that be the equivalant of YOU gene?????), a dispatcher, and a secretary. Each to work 12 hour shifts to cover the trailer.
Me: Okay

I don't really mind radio, but when it's combined with "active" I start to have problems with the idea. I do radio, not radioactive. I don't need a healthy glowing complexion that badly.

Yup, it was a "you". I'm getting all the dispatch stuff out of the emergency bag, logs, big book of knoledge, pens and crap. Radio guy is hooking up radios to all the frequencies we'll need. Guy driving the motor home sets the jacks to level, hoists up the 20 foot tower on the top, turns on the camera and tv and sets so we can watch the smoke billowing from behind the ridge above town.

Radio guy gets his radio's set up. Give us his call ID and cell phone number. Looks up at the TV with the billowing smoke. Says he needs to go work on the other comand center. As he leaves, tells us. You see flames on the monitor . . . it'd get the hell out of here if I was you.

Think is . . . I was set up 20 miles away from where I "thought" and was told I was going. I was told I was going to a spot 10 miles from the fire line. Wouldn't you know it . . . I'm sitting a half mile from the "line."

4 hours later, we find out . . I'm not supposed to be with the command truck they told me, I'm supposed to be dispatching from the main incident command. Get their in time for dinner, started raining . . . kind of killed the fire for the night and they sent me home!

I do my fair share of dangerous. I drove some contractor workers up Thompson Peak last week and one of the guys was about freaking out. A 3,000 foot vertical drop and a one-lane road has that effect on some people. I've made the drive a thousand times if I've made it once so I don't really share the same concerns but yeah, if the truck goes off the road you're going to be hurt really bad. My truck ain't going off the road. I've had trucks stall on me, I've had to back up that road, I have more experience in extreme offroad driving that than any ten average men can claim and I respect it, but I am not scared of it. It's part of the job and the scenery is spectacular.

Radio guy gets his radio's set up. Give us his call ID and cell phone number. Looks up at the TV with the billowing smoke. Says he needs to go work on the other comand center. As he leaves, tells us. You see flames on the monitor . . . it'd get the hell out of here if I was you.

I don't think your system is as big as what I have to run. 40 dispatch positions across six public safety agencies is what I'm the tech for and I go from the ground to the mountains and back down again making those things work. DC to Daylight and back down again. I know exactly how they work and my biggest challenge is operator turnover.

I've got all these carefully crafted backup plans, backup radios ready to go and trained operators who know if this bad thing happens, you push this button and it's all good and then a week later, they're gone to a better job.

Do you know what you call a 911 Dispatcher who has been on the job for six months? "Shift Supervisor". The turnover rate is THAT BAD.

I couldn't do your job. Oh, technically I could, I can tear your equipment down to Parade Rest and put it back together again and I know exactly how and why it works, but I wouldn't have the people skills required to deal with people in perpetual panic mode. That's why I like electronics. You'll never hear a radio panic.

Think is . . . I was set up 20 miles away from where I "thought" and was told I was going. I was told I was going to a spot 10 miles from the fire line. Wouldn't you know it . . . I'm sitting a half mile from the "line."

True enough, but it's a trailer so it's really not like you're stuck there. If the "line" moves, then so does the trailer.

You're going to like the next-gen dispatch of Voice over IP. Dispatch from your home PC. Don't even drive to work. Hopefully that will help the turnover rate in dispatchers. I know there's no more money to be thrown at the problem but not all compensation is cash either. Making the job easier or more convenient is a bonus too.

4 hours later, we find out . . I'm not supposed to be with the command truck they told me, I'm supposed to be dispatching from the main incident command. Get their in time for dinner, started raining . . . kind of killed the fire for the night and they sent me home!

They handed me some potassium pill at the command trailer and a radiation meter and I'm like "this really sucks, why don't I wait over there like in SCOTTSDALE if you need a radio fixed?"

I think they really look at me like a McGuyver kind of guy and that's not entirely untrue, but I ain't no good to anybody as a victim of the catastrophe so my survival instincts aren't totally selfish in nature. Ain't no disaster has ever been averted by a man who ain't breathing.

See Gene? Now you know what I was talking about a week or so ago with the ants here..

'They were everywhere': Residents deal with bugs
Carol Sowers and Diana Balazs
The Arizona Republic
Jul. 24, 2007 11:05 AM

NORTHEAST VALLEY - Tiny black bugs swarmed into the Northeast Valley, where it "looked like a horror movie," said one witness.

Pete Kosednar, who owns a Scottsdale-based window-washing company, said he was walking about 6 a.m. Monday at the el Pedregal Festival Marketplace, near Scottsdale Road and Carefree Highway, where he saw bugs "hanging from the ceiling. They were everywhere."

The black bug story is crawling all over the far Northeast Valley.

The Scottsdale-based office of Arizona Exterminating Co. received many calls from Cave Creek, Carefree and north Scottsdale.

There were sightings at a Scottsdale bank, where they were reportedly swarming over a wall, a few at a realty office, and at a grocery store.

Debbie Bridges, in the management office of el Pedregal, said she had no reports about bitty black bugs at the marketplace.

But that doesn't mean she hadn't seen them at all.

Apparently some of the bugs preferred the north country.

"We saw black bugs swarming around on our way home (Sunday night) from Flagstaff," she said.

Without examining a sample, it is difficult to say what the bugs might be, said Jennifer Snyder, a research specialist with the University of Arizona's Maricopa Agricultural Center, based in Maricopa.

But Snyder said the monsoon is bringing out many critters including cicadas, crickets and grasshoppers.

In the desert, water is gold, Snyder said.

"Water is going to bring out all kinds of things and for a brief period of time usually because they're just completing their life cycle and it's just one stage and then they move on," she said.

Brian Benham, of the Boulder's Resort & Club, next door to el Pedegral, said the bugs turned up overnight in the area outside. A few crept inside, but he said he got no complaints from guests.

They were clearing out Monday morning.

"We couldn't have stopped the bugs any more than we could have stopped the rain," Benham said.

That's weird that a local paper would screw that story up. Scottsdale Road turns into Tom Darlington Drive before it meets up with the Carefree Highway so technically there is no intersection of Scottsdale Road and the Carefree Highway. If they're talking about that intersection it's about 25 miles from my house as the crow flies.

I love what the desert does right after a rain. It's like you blink your eyes and it's instantly greened up. Plants perk up, wispy little desert grass pops up in less than an hour, and things spring to life if only for just a little while.

The bugs are part of that. It's like there's a million of them one minute and the next they're just gone until it rains again.

Well, there's a lot to it. You can go out in the middle of nowhere with your guns and just start shooting and nobody calls the cops on you. Try that in a city park and you'll have a SWAT van unload nearby with several very serious men with bigger guns than yours.

I like getting out there at night away from the city lights with my little telescope, I like driving my little 4x4 around exploring aimlessly just to see what I can see, and I like the smell of the creosote and the lazy rattle of snake in the distance... the further the distance the better.

No bushes, the bathrooms are on the other side of the house, the porch is closer to the livingroom. Therefore, it's easier to go to the back porch than to the bathroom. After 6-7 beers you'll pee anywhere anyway.

just don't stand too close to the cactus....

Guys can see the target. Hitting it is a different story. My favorite is the cliff drop. 5000 feet off the side of a cliff waterfall is just beautiful. It's one of those things you do and then think "Hope nobody was down there!"

Second favorite is writing your name in the snow, but in Phoenix that's not an opportunity that shows up very often. Besides, with a name like "Gene" it's not much of a writing opportunity anyway. The "G" is the only really cool and expressive letter in my name. The other letters are just lumps in cursive handscript.

I knew a girl who would pop a swat pretty much anywhere. I think she prefered peeing outside. She was an eskimo. We don't get many of those here in SC.

MEL could be done all straight lines easy. Even if you did the whole name the only challenges would be dotting the "i" (and not even a guy could easily pull that one off) and the curve on the "d".

I can read the writing on the wall. That wouldn't be impossible to do.

Embarrassing moment while I was drunk:

Was drinking before a Rage Against the Machine/U2 concert. Got drunk. The concert was held at Clemson's Death Valley (football stadium). On the way to my seat I was walking backwards down some stairs (mistake #1) talking to my friends and tripped. The stadium stairs are concrete, and I rolled down about 20 of them. I got up bleeding and bruised but still ready for the concert, didn't hurt yet b/c of the alcohol.
