this reminds me of a poem See if anyone can tell me who wrote it

Born of the rubble that lies there
Nurtured through snow and through rain
By men whose only companions
Are derrick, and shovel, and crane.
Center for great institutions
Place where conglomerates grow
Yet home for the little cigar shop
With the candies all in a row.
Seven-seven-seven they will call you.
Towards heaven, heaven, heaven you will soar.
Only God can make a tree, I will grant you
But only man can make a fortieth floor.

Despite what the weatherman said, the rain held off and the sky cleared by early afternoon... turned out to be a nice day... was finally able to mow the lawn.

I went tubing on the Salt River today, and as it was a planned trip I did some preparation for it. One of the things I saw on the last trip was a floating cooler, but it was a little one that one of the girls had.

I'm a man and being a man, I like 'em big. I don't know who invented the boob job but I'd be willing to bet it wasn't a woman. I digress.

Anyway, I go shopping in search of the greatest river rafting cooler ever invented, and I found this monster cooler. http://www.pooltoy.com/60qucobysp.html

At Cabela's, they had it mounted on the wall next to a Catamaran and a Bass Boat so it didn't look THAT big by comparison so I happily grabbed the box, put it in my shopping cart and out came the debit card. Ka-CHING!!

Getting this cooler home was only part of the battle. I had to blow it up. So, puffing away, I blew and blew and blew until the Three Little Pigs sent me an e-mail saying "NO MAS! NO MAS!" and then I remembered I had a 5 Horsepower electric air compressor with a 25 gallon tank in my toolshed. That thing could paint a house so I let it blow up the rafting cooler like a power tool should and it grew. And grew. And grew. Just as I'm beginning to have serious doubts about any ability to get this thing through the door, it was finally inflated.

This was a "What Were You Thinking" sort of moment as I gazed upon this thing taking up fully half my kitchen floor and I realized that 60 quarts is 15 gallons. This thing is bigger than the gas tanks of most modern vehicles and I'm gonna fill it with what?

So, I put my six-pack in there, some pints of water, soda, and such and then the ice and it was only a teeny bit full. Not even 1/4 the way full but I figured I'd certainly need help getting this beast down to the river and what better way to enlist aid than having extra cooler space? I'd simply say that I have space in my cooler (understatement of the year), fellow tubers would seize the opportunity and then they'd share a mutual interest in transporting this floating cooler to the Salt River with me.

Few things have foiled great plans as much as gravity does. If not for gravity, Wile E. Coyote would have long ago caught that Roadrunner, and my planning fared little better. You see, my plan actually did work and it was effective, and I did get many people putting their stuff in my cooler and therefore helping me get to the river with it, however MY STUFF WAS ON THE BOTTOM.

I did enjoy the trip down the river, even though getting any of my beverages required more effort than your average coal mine takes, and I did have bar none the coolest, biggest, baddest cooler on the river today but next time, I'm taking the girl-sized cooler. There's a reason Wile E. Coyote was a male. Nobody would believe a girl could be that dumb with overkill.

Glad you had a good time..you can use the cooler as a jacuzzi until the next trip.

OMG Rick!!!!

You know what you were telling us happened to Elizabeth's dad's kitchen yesterday? Guess what? That happened to Sarah's bedroom today!
Or at some point...i don't even know when it happened. My dad said...what happened to the ceiling in Sarah's room? She hasn't been here in over a week so I had no reason to go in her room and the door was closed. I was like...I don't know what you're talking about. I walked in a big hunk of sheetrock is on the floor and another hunk is bulging down and the globe around the light on her ceiling fan has about 3 inches of water in it! It must have happened a few days ago because everything feels dry but it's obvious that a good bit of water was leaking in there because all of her bedding is water stained.
It's from the air conditioner.....and we've had this problem before and I'm ****ED.

Soupster, do you have any idea what that pound sign is supposed to stand for? It looks like a funny "L" and I always thought it stood for "LBS" because that's an abbreviation for Pounds.

I've never figured out the American dollar sign. "$" can't stand for "Dollar" by any stretch of the imagination.

I think it stands for you've been ripped off! Or to be academic it means This sign is simply a capital letter L, written in old-fashioned roundhand, with one or two crossbars to show that it is being used as a symbol or abbreviation. The L stands for the Latin word libra, the name of a Roman unit of weight, which also gave rise to the abbreviation lb for a pound as a measure of weight, and to the French word livre. The symbol for the Japanese yen was probably invented by analogy with the pound and dollar symbols, as it is a capital Y with one or two bars across it.

So you were spot on  ............courtesy of google

I thought of that after I typed it that it probably does have something to do with the Latin word for Pound (Libra, as you said).

The $ is all over the place with different theories as to its origin. Google can't even figure this one out.

The story I think is most credible is that the "S" stood for "Schilling" and the bar through it shows it to be an abbreviation. You see the same convention in the capital "L" for the British Pound to and again in the Yen symbol and the Euro.

Gene does this sound pheasable:-
The history of the dollar is a story involving many countries in different continents. The word dollar is much older than the American unit of currency. It is an Anglicised form of "thaler", (pronounced taler, with a long "a"), the name given to coins first minted in 1519 from locally mined silver in Joachimsthal in Bohemia. (Today the town of Joachimsthal lies within the borders of the Czech republic and its Czech name is Jáchymov). Thaler is a shortened form of the term by which the coin was originally known - Joachimsthaler.

Later on the English version of the name (dollar) was also applied to similar coins, not only ones minted in central Europe but also the Spanish peso and the Portuguese eight-real piece. Both these large silver coins were practically identical in weight and fineness. Today we are familiar with the phrase pieces of eight from tales of pirates in the Caribbean.

Those coins, particularly the Spanish peso or dollar circulated widely in Britain's North American colonies because of a shortage of official British coins. That is why, after the United States gained its independence the new nation chose "dollar" as the name of its currency instead of keeping the pound.
