It finally happened, I had a salesman try to sell me an extended warranty that cost more than the item I was buying.

Radio Shack had a golf distance finder scope on the bargain table for only $3, and when the sales clerk rang it up, there was an extended warranty available for $5 and he asked me, with a straight face mind you, if I wanted to buy a $5 extended warranty on a $3 golf telescope.

I looked at him and flat out said that's the stupidest thing that's happened to me all week. It totally takes the cake. No, I did not want to spend $5 for an extended warranty on a $3 item.

That's gotta be the scam of scams, and what I was thinking is they wouldn't even ask if there weren't people actually stupid enough to buy extended warranties for more than the item costs so we could sell extended warranties for Rickalodeon.

We wouldn't make much, as there aren't that many idiots here, but what we do make would be pure profit, wouldn't it? :cool:

I was kidding about the backing into the mailbox thing. I couldn't even back into my mailbox without actually taking out the front brick wall of my house. I've got a wall-mounted mailbox and the postman has to walk door to door in my neighborhood because it's "grandfathered" (my house was built in 1955) so the poor post office guy has to actually get out and carry a mail sack from door to door like in the old days.

I've lost about another 20 pounds since the last time you saw me, so I'm about drop-dead sexy guy now. Kinda like Rick but without the buzz cut thing going on. It works for him, but I got cowlicks so I can't run with the whole macho buzz cut. I actually need to style my hair a little bit, although I usually just wear hats.

Speaking of hats, I sort of lost my New Orleans hat. I went camping and a little girl at the camping trip thought the bright blue and white hat was absolutely adorable, and she kept swiping it to wear. I'd swipe it back, and we went back and forth but I wound up letting her have it. The girl (Jocelynne, or "Jossie") was about KK's age.

So, I need another New Orleans hat. Which means I need to come back to New Orleans to get a replacement. When do you think is a good time?

I'm hoping when the Wii actually starts getting some online gaming that I can play you, or Austin, or KK, it's all good.

I can't take any time off of work for several months either. I've got four 911 dispatch centers moving in the next five months. I'm swamped until at least October. I just moved the City of Scottsdale 911 dispatch center last week, which took a lot of my time and racked my stress levels to heights they'd never reached before.

When people call 911, they expect everything to work. When dispatchers answer 911, they expect everything to work. Guess who they yell at if it doesn't work? Poor Gene. I live a life of loud complaints and faint praise, but it's cool anyway, I love to have my hands in the cutting-edge tech that makes it all happen.

I have to do this exact same project I just did four more times this year. I'm either going to go stark raving mad or become a communications genius the likes of which Halliburton would pay a million bucks a year for.

I'm going to say the exact same thing that I say to everybody who asks my advice in buying a computer.

You ain't buying hardware.

Nobody wants to buy a drill, what they want is holes. They don't want the hardware at all, what they want is the job done.

Wii actually embraces that concept, and it's a simple concept. The Xbox 360 (I own one) and the PlayStation 3 (I can't even find an excuse to buy one) are basically the same as drills. They're just hardware and you don't want the hardware at all as a gamer, what you want is the game.

It's just like in an arcade, you'll put a token in the slot and play the game, and flat-out walk right away from the hardware because it's nothing you wanted in the first place, right?

The Wii is basically a Nintendo Gamecube, it's five-year-old technology retooled with a new sort of user interface to get the job done.

What's the job? To entertain the gamer. The zealots at Microsoft and Sony think the job is to IMPRESS the gamer and that's truly not the job at hand. You can make impressive games all day long but if they aren't entertaining games, they won't sell so why build gaming consoles to impress people who want to be entertained? Where's the logic in that?

That's exactly the logic behind the Nintendo Wii. It's not going to compete in the impressive. Nintendo isn't out to impress anybody, they don't sell wow factor, they sell entertainment and they simply stepped out of the silly wow factor 80 bajillion gigaflops and 40 bajillion quadrangles and went back to why people play games. They just want to have fun. They don't want to buy the drill, they just want the job done.

You say you weren't impressed? Good. That's not what the Wii does. Don't be impressed. Have fun instead.

It's ARIZONA, nobody has basements here. Bedrock is like three feet down. Arizona used to be the bottom of a prehistoric ocean and you can still find the fossils of sea urchin shells around here.

One of my closets is so big that when my brother stayed here he used it as a bedroom for his kids. The thing is HUGE, not just a walk-in closet, it's WALTZ-IN closet class. I've never figured out why the closet is like that either, it's totally out of character for the rest of my house but it's really cool.
