That's how I feel, the best memories of my holidays in Spain was talking ( attempting) to talk to the locals, I like to shop in the local shop etc, I just like to feel the different culture. Being in a big hotel with English bars and food , when say in Spain, eating and doing what you would do at home is sooooooooo naff to me!
Absolutely-git out there, enjoy the culture and people. That's the only way to truly experience another place :D

anyone wanna take in a single, double jointed, 30 yr old woman :))
Let me get this straight... a woman who can smack a guy upside the head forwards and backwards is what double-jointed means?
I can abuse myself just fine. Don't need a double-jointed woman for that.

WHAT??? I just came back from a camping trip at Picacho Peak State Park with the Ahwahtukee Singles Club and I had two women asking me about the strange noises I was making in my tent this morning.
I had to tell 'em I was trying to get through World 5 of New Super Mario Bros. on my Nintendo DS and I was having a heck of a time getting through the snow levels.

THAT RIGHT THERE is the difference between women and men.
Let this be an object lesson...
The female here wants to be one with nature, to blend in and not disturb anything, to co-exist and find harmony.
I'm a male and I say SCREW THAT!!
Do you know how the West was won? Guys with guns and trains and wagons coming through and kicking ass, that's how the West was won. It wasn't about being one with nature. It was about giving a black eye to nature and saying "That's right, I'm doing this MY WAY!!"
You can't win by avoiding conflict. If you're not willing to win... you won't.
I went camping to have fun in a nature surrounding.
Goals:
Have Fun
See Nature
Kick Nature's AssCamping is about OVERCOMING NATURE. It's like winning the West. The harder you kick it in the pants, the cooler it is. That's a manly-man thing.
I was in the middle of the desert, on a Queen-sized double-flocked Coleman Mattress, in a 6' tall tent playing videogames and drinking Propel Melon energy drink.
I came, I saw, I kicked it!! Vini, Vidi, Vici bay-bee!
I love nature. It makes a great opponent.

Huh, and all this time I thought "overcoming nature" was scrounging up yer own vittles from what's around you, dealing with the rocks in your back while sleeping, and avoiding being eaten alive by skeeters (or worse) while camping....

I took a kite and flew it, and a mountain bike and rode it. Those are good camping toys. I wasn't even the only one with a mountain bike. Other campers bring those all the time. The kite was admittedly unusual for camping, but a kite is a celebration of nature.
Camping is about staring in the face of Mother Nature and saying "Ma, I've grown up and I'll do as I please now. Stop sending me to my room."
You gotta remember too, I'm a radio tech who takes 4x4 drives up the steepest mountain roads, to the highest peaks and through the roughest desert and I get paid to go beat nature with technology. It's fun! It's Daring! It's very, very MALE.

Those toys are okay, they get you out of the tent. Leave the battery operated toys at home.
I guess you'd have been really disgusted with me on the White Tanks New Years Eve camping trip then. I took my DLP Projector and a 6-foot movie screen watching the Ball drop in Times Square live using my HP Laptop as a TV receiver. The ranger saw that and said he ain't ever seen campers do that one before.
On an off topic side note . . . . last week our radio tech was listening in his shop and came in and helped answer phones for me . . . . they tried to give him an hour dispatch pay on top of his regular pay but he wouldn't take it (Man he saved my life by coming in to answer phones!)
Radio techs get paid a lot better than most dispatchers do, at least where I'm working. I probably wouldn't take the money either, not if I was getting my regular pay. I don't usually talk about pay with dispatchers because it would tick 'em off.
The closest I've ever come to helping out with dispatch was one of the operators wasn't able to get an emergency callbox to operate because she was making a basic mistake so to get the citizen some help right away, I just asked "do you mind if I do it?" and she shook her head "no" so I grabbed my portable and punched the sequence to open up the box and make the call connect. Turned out it was a guy with kids who had gotten stuck in the sand, had no water and kids in the car.
After the call was over, I politely told her what she did wrong... she wasn't waiting for the second call from the callbox. It repeats itself, transmitting twice and only after the second time does it go into receive mode for the call initiate sequence.
The callboxes go like this when the citizen pushes the "Help" button...
A voice tells the citizen "Please Stand By, Your Call Has Been Sent" (liars, it hasn't yet but it probably makes the citizen feel better.)
Then the radio in the callbox transmits a message over the air on a designated channel like "Emergency. Canyon Lake Callbox Number 312. Emergency. Canyon Lake Callbox Number 312."
For 15 seconds, the callbox will listen for the sequence (basically the number it says is the sequence). If it hears it, the call initiates and the dispatcher will say "Sheriff's Office, What Is Your Emergency?" and the citizen can push the button to talk, same button he used to start the thing.
If after 15 seconds the callbox hasn't heard anything, the callbox transmits the "Emergency" call again, twice and waits again. Over and over. The thing is like the Energizer bunny too, it will keep on going and it won't be ignored.
Usually if I operate the things it's because I'm doing maintenance to make sure the things work. It would kind of suck to have a citizen see one of these callboxes and push the button on a broken one with a real emergency.
It's an entertaining channel to listen to sometimes. So far "emergencies" I've heard have included:
A citizen reporting a vending machine for stealing his dollar. (Grand Theft Cola?)
A citizen requesting a deputy bring beer (he'd obviously had ENOUGH).
A citizen asking where to buy a fishing license at. (Not from the fish)
A citizen who needed gas for his boat (row, row, row your boat!)
A citizen reporting a UFO (Close Encounters of the Stupid Kind.)
The things people think are emergencies is just about comedy in and of itself.

Have you ever shot a full beer can? Yeah, I know, that's alcohol abuse but man is it funny. A .22 gives a better show than a .357 Magnum though. I like seeing the can rolling around fizzing out foam everywhere and the .357 just blows the thing up.
I like to do all of those things too, but I only hunt stuff I could actually eat. A Javelina is about as big as I'd go, because something like a deer for one guy to eat, I'd be eating deer for three solid months and I'd be so sick of deer that I'd never want to watch Bambi again.
WTH is wrong w/ u........
i dont take electronics camping w/ me.
I work on electronics for my supper. Pretty much every meal I've had for the past 20+ years has been paid for by my mad electronics skillz. It's part of who I am, it's part of my personality and it's my comfort zone. If I'm out without electronics, then I'd feel nekkid and uncomfortable.
Some people need coffee to function.
Some people need their cigarettes.
Some people need their jewelry.
Most people have crutches. Mine is electronics. It's a crutch which has served me well.

I've seen the posting for ITS openings. Waaaaaaaaaaaay more than dispatch. But you know it was the thought that counts.
Only thing the tech did to help was answer the non-emergency lines.
Imagine PSAP for three counties, and Primary for all state agencies for seven counties. I'm the only body in dispatch. I take 8 9-1-1 calls of a blue pick up on it's top on highway x, and they had to drive to get cell phone service. Only three things the 8 agree on. 4 say the truck is empty, 4 say single male strapped upside down in seatbelt and bleading from the head. 5 different locations on where it could be in two different counties on the same highway. Then the Third county calls in they have two cars off. Now I'm calling and waking troopers up. Fire and medical rolling.
Fourth county is getting a report of a car on it's top in the median of the interstate. So I'm getting a trooper headed that way.
I hear the LT check on . . (running through my head oh **** why does he have to check on TODAY)
about this time the radio tech comes in and asks "need me to answer phones?"
Soon as he sits down, 9-1-1 of a possible heart attack in county number 5.
Ended up in 45 minute streatch, two injury accidents, three property damage only, a heart attack.
oooooh my head just thinking of that morning!
The things people think are emergencies is just about comedy in and of itself. If I only had a dollar for each one!

What happened was we went to go camping, and everybody had planned on an evening by the campfire but Arizona had a drought so no campfires were allowed. No fun campfires, so we were discussing what to do without a campfire and I saw the power outlets and the big covered patio and thought "my projector and movie screen would WORK here!"
I didn't live very far away (about a half-hour) so I just ran home and got the stuffs and then set it up so if we couldn't watch a campfire, we could watch the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. It wasn't even planned, it just worked that way in a moment of inspired dementia.
I've seen the posting for ITS openings. Waaaaaaaaaaaay more than dispatch. But you know it was the thought that counts.
Only thing the tech did to help was answer the non-emergency lines.
Yeah, I'd suppose so. I'd be afraid I'd mess up on an emergency call and say something totally inappropriate. I'm not trained for that sort of thing and besides, if I actually started operating the equipment I'd probably find something I didn't like and go and change it around to suit myself.
I tend to make things more complicated than they need to be. Bad habit of mine, I'm a techie. Better to let the customer determine the level of complexities.
(snip)
Ended up in 45 minute streatch, two injury accidents, three property damage only, a heart attack.
oooooh my head just thinking of that morning!
I've seen personnel shortages in most of the dispatch centers around here and the reason why is that it's a high-stress job, the pay is crummy, it's thankless work and overtime is practically mandatory.
I wouldn't work that job for that money. I can operate the equipment, heck, I can FIX the equipment, configure it, integrate it and wire it too, but what I couldn't do is the talking calmly and rationally to people who aren't calm and rational. That would get really old, really fast.
My job is fairly thankless too, after all, most of the time when people think of the comm tech, it's when something is broken and they're not happy about that, but on the bright side I get to play with some of the COOLEST STUFF you ever saw!!
If I only had a dollar for each one!
I think it'd be a cool reality show.
America's Stupidest 911 Calls!
Dispatcher: "Hello, 911, what is your emergency?"
Caller: "My Cable TV isn't working and the game is on in three minutes!"
Dispatcher: "Sir, that is not an emergency. You need to call the Cable Company."
Caller: "Can you give me their number?"
Dispatcher: "Sir, that's 411, not 911."

I should have done that before he got to my house that morning.
That would have been priceless when he picked up my laptop and tried to log on to get a banned message.. I could have been lying in wait with my camera...hehehe
Course he did have handcuffs.....
Just remember not to IP Ban him at your house. That would make it difficult to make it back in to undo the deed.

Actually our center is fully staffed. Fully staffed we have a single dispatcher on from midnight to 8am. We don't get over time :(( They do everything they can to keep us at 40/week.
And we occassionaly get our thanks. Every now and then a letter will come in through one of the agency thanking a dispatcher. We get a "YAZ" when that happens. Three YAZ's and we get a paid day off.

That's different. I've never been in a PSAP with less than two online and manned.
At least two of the PSAPs (not naming names) bought an "extra" position and then wound up having to run it not as a spare, but as a full-time operator position.
They're buying new ones, but they're finding out the hard way that these things aren't grown on trees. The new dispatch positions I'm putting in tomorrow, two Centracom Gold Elites, they're pushing $50,000 apiece. That's not including the $50,000 CAD system and phones, or the $30,000 furniture it's going on. With installation and everything, the ops are probably pushing a quarter-million bucks apiece.
It takes time to get all the parts and integrate it all. Even if you had the money to put down on the barrelhead today, it would still be three months at least to get a good dispatch position going.
And we occassionaly get our thanks. Every now and then a letter will come in through one of the agency thanking a dispatcher. We get a "YAZ" when that happens. Three YAZ's and we get a paid day off.
If we get a letter of thanks, our boss has a stroke. That just never happens.

Rural Utah :) We have three positions that are manned during peak times. Also the supervisor and manager can enter calls in the CAD from their offices.
At least two of the PSAPs (not naming names) bought an "extra" position and then wound up having to run it not as a spare, but as a full-time operator position.
Somewhat like our center. The third position is the "supervisors". But it is now filled by a regular dispatcher during peak times. We were supposed to move to a new building this July with 4 positions . . . . but the money for the remodel and move dissapeared.
Note Rural utah: One county we dispatch for has a land area of 2,466 square miles and a popularion of 2,450 :)

He told me that it's because it's Kielbasa, it's Polish. So, apparently I polished off Polish sausage AND Kielbasa at the same time, so happy that I had killed two pork products with one stone, I asked for a Polish dessert to polish off, but alas, the waiter had no Polish desserts to offer. He did suggest a Danish, however.

Why can't you buy water at a soda fountain?
I go to a convenience store, and I want a cup of ice water.
Isn't that a simple thing? A cup, with ice, and some water. Why in the heck can't you buy that?
You have to buy water in a bottle. These places have soda fountains and thirty different kinds of soda pop, but heaven forbid you find Dasani at the dispenser.
Everybody knows the stupid bottled water came through a city water system and got processed anyway, so what's the big deal about putting it out as a choice on a soda fountain? I can get GATORADE at a soda fountain but I can't get Propel, and they're the same company. Something is inherently WRONG with that.
I just want a cup of ice and a soda fountain that has Propel Citrus Flavor dispensed at the push of a button. Is that so wrong?
