View Full Version : The Late Night Review

Finally, a thread for all you late night loiterers and insouciant insomniacs.
A place to opine about threads divine and posts pathetic. A sort of soup to nuts of the daily activity on WP.
So what was hot, and what was not...
Today?

Considering a democratic debate was held Thursday night, one would expect the board to be liberally littered with threads about the positions of the various candidates today.
Specifically, one would have thought our friends from the left hand lane would be extolling the virtues of their fair haired boys (or in the case of Sen. Clinton, their flaxen fringed Fraulein) and pointedly poking those candidates of lesser intellect.
I noticed several running commentaries about the debate, though they were started, and largely populated, by those of more conservative bent.
Why the general indifference to the debate, and more specifically why is there not more lively debate over democratic candidates...
from democratic posters?
Mr. M

well from where I stand.. The debates are a joke. They are scripted at least loosely anyway. Give each candidate a 1 on 1 for an hour in late night, rather than just sundays face the nation. That would be the best way to get the issues out there IMO
It's probably a stretch to call the recent formats we've been treated to a "debate".
Dive usually refers to it as advertising and I couldn't agree more. The pol's do their best to make one or two points, but largely they're looking to not lodge their loafer in their craw.
He who gaffes least, lasts.
Still, I'm curious about the lack of response to the alleged debates from Democrats hereabouts...

Well Thursday night, there were three live viewing threads one of them started by me, a Democrat. I was the only Dem posting in that thread but it was nice actually. Substantive even.
I think it's great that conservatives watched and took the time to comment. I watch the Republican debates as well.

I'm curious why there aren't more "Rah Rah!" (or "Boo Hiss" for that matter!) threads by democrats for their chosen candidates, particularly following a debate.
Any theories?

In order to have a debate one must first have controversial issues to debate. Then you must have those who are willing to talk rationally about solutions.
No one had any ideas for fixing the problems except to run from Iraq.
Nothing new, no hard issues for Clinton, and jabs towards the others....
it wasn’t a debate it was a commercial.

actually, i call them "joint press conferences"
and all you ever really get are their talking points
what i would love to see are real debates where you have a topic for that debate and its a give and take between 2 candidates and do them in a round robin style with all candidates getting their chance with each topic and against all the other candidates
that would separate the wheat from the chaff fast enough

yeah, not much of a debate when everyone on the stage basically agrees with eachother
and then the softball questions were a waste of time

I stand corrected Dive. And the term "joint press conferences" is fitting.
I think the candidates dread the kind of debates you recommend especially early on in primaries. They simply provide too much fodder for "gotcha" politics and nobody wants to say something off their talking points...
and see their name splashed across the newspaper and cable news crawl the next day.
It is difficult for us to differentiate between them when they spend most of their time trying to not take any stand.

I think its because absolutely nothing new was garnered that night. The only thing I am hearing about is how CNN set up the questions in at least 1 case.
http://hotair.com/archives/2007/11/16/woman-who-asked-hillary-moronic-diamondspearls-question-cnn-set-me-up/
“Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN,” Luisa writes. “I was asked to submit questions including “lighthearted/fun” questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance.”… {Not the ones about pearls or diamonds} ~ my words
That’s what the media does. See, the media chose what they wanted, not what the people or audience really wanted. That’s politics; that’s reality. So, if you want to read about real issues important to America–and the whole world, I suggest you pick up a copy of the Economist or the New York Times or some other independent source.
Smart man, from Texas, you are. The Economist is one of the best sources of info on American politics, but more importantly on policies. The NY Times is a tremendously good source of information - they dig deep on stories, and bring issues to light. Sometimes the right-wing jabberers don't like it, because the Times doesn't play just their favorite song 10 times an hour.
The "media" in this country mostly talks about the horse race, to all our detriment. Even Fox News, and ABC Radio, talk more about The Race than about policy. THey, and CNN, ENCOURAGE flames on non-subsantive issues, like what someone in Hillary's call said about somebody else, because it stir CONTROVERSY (about nothing), and they make it appear to be important (though it's absolutely NOT). The Economist is a much-needed breeze of substance - i second the recommendation.

The Economist has always been far more insightful than Time or Newsweek, especially as concerns American politics. I'm afraid People Magazine has had influence even in what are supposed to be policy journals.

I didn't really see the ones who do get into those live viewing threads online Thursday. Don't make more of it that that.
I got into some of the threads this morning discussing the debate and it was a mix of Hillary hate and Biden love. There was a good bit of interest so I have to respectfully disagree with your premise that nobody cares about the debates.
I watch them whenever I can. There is a place where you can still learn about the candidates in between their scripted responses and where they get ticked at something. It just sort of comes out when they least expect it.

I don't really think I'd characterize my view as "nobody cares"...
I'm more interested in where all the threads extolling the brilliance of Obama or the poor performance of Clinton are at, particularly from those with a more Democratic bent.
Usually Republican debates bring out dozens of threads about Hunter or Guiliani or Thompson or Paul by Republicans and/or Conservatives.
I'm somewhat nonplussed by the lack of those threads by Democrats.

I saw that thread and was a little surprised it didn't generate more lively discussion.
I've seen some discussion of Nicolas Sarkozy on the boards in the past. The gist generally goes something like this:
John: The French have elected a Conservative.
Jane: He's a socialist considerably to the left of any American Democrat.
John: Yes, but for the French he is Conservative, particularly when compared to Chirac.
Jane: That doesn't make him conservative.
And so on.
What I have seen (I believe it was in Le Monde or La République) is the French press revile him as conservative. I have no idea if that portrayal is monolithic to French press in general or simply to one or two Gallic rags. It is interesting that, at a time when America is being advertised as reviled globally, a French leader would speak effusively about us.
Any thoughts on why the thread got short shrift?

I suppose most folks in here don't care about Europeans or about what's going on in Europe.
I'm kinda guilty of that myself, but the stuff Rush played today made me stand up and take notice of this guy.
By the way, I just went to Rush's site and got the link to the transcript:

I must say, listening to the broadcast was much more stirring than reading the transcript.

Thanks for the link. It could be said that he was simply being polite, but I don't recall any addresses Chirac gave that were as warm and conciliatory as the transcripts of the Sarkozy speech, though I certainly might have missed them.
America, in general, I think is rightly befuddled by the politics of Europe. Is Union pour un Mouvement Populaire sufficiently distanced from Chirac to be distinct from him? How does it differ from RPR? Is Sarkozy the successor to Chirac or the reaction to him?
And ultimately, how would it affect us? I think our self-infatuation guarantees our disdain for them if their politics were simple.
How much more so when their politics are Gordian in nature.
Still, those threads usually generate a little more electricity from the likes of Polkfan, Tommy and BJ. Perhaps they missed it...

I must admit ignorance to the internal affairs of France, but it's my impression that the people of France are so accustomed to having some form of government largesse, as well as govenment mandates such as the 35-hour work week, that it'll be extremely difficult for Sarkozy to implement reforms that try to wean the people from the beneficent government teat.
I've seen the insideous nature of government entitlements. No matter what their political persuation, people don't want to give up a government handout that they've become accustomed to having. I see this in my own family. I have several close relatives who are prosperous well-to-do farmers, who are otherwise staunch conservatives and who decry such things as welfare. These same folks have become accustomed to getting government crop subsidy checks. They don't really need the money, but they take it because it's there and they like getting it, and they don't want to see the subsidy program scrapped.
Sarkozy's success, or lack thereof, could be instructive to those of use here in the U.S. who long for a reduction in the size and scope of government.
I hope Sarkozy prevails, but I don't foresee him having much success.

I don't believe Europe's broad experiment with socialism in its various forms has reached its zenith yet. France might be considered something of a bellwether for continental politics, though I think many would argue France is a xenophobic country whose Gallic arrogance makes them an unlikely example for fledgling democracies recently released from the boot of oppressive government.
In any case, Sarkozy is more likely a steppingstone in a larger, global trend. That trend is not likely to be conducive to those of libertarian leaning for some time. Not until national tills and natural resources run short when the bills of public expectation are overdue.
In any case, try bumping that thread when you see one of the aforementioned on board and let's see if we can jump start it.

Ok srsly, wth is up with this?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the threat of a recession looming, many families are looking for ways to get some quick cash to make it through these hard times.
In a move that financial analysts are calling a dangerous gamble, one company is offering a debit card that lets you tap into your 401k savings.
Borrowing against your 401k isn't a new concept, but financial planners say making that money so easily accessible through a debit card greatly increases the potential danger. Money taken out of a 401k now could mean less money left for retirement.
The Reserve Solutions ReservePlus debit card lets employees borrow against their 401k plan by making withdrawals at ATMs, paying interest on the money withdrawn.
The director of Reserve Solutions says there are a number of advantages to the program including:
Young contributors are more likely to open accounts, knowing they can access the money in an emergency
Since people can withdraw as they need, Reserve Solutions says its clients take out 35% less than traditional 401ks
The ReservePlus debit card was first offered in 2003, but Reserve Solutions is just beginning to market it now. Reserve Solutions claims the program has between 5,000-10,000 subscribers.
