LANSING --Gov. Jennifer Granholm said today she hopes lawmakers won't be intimidated by an anti-tax group's threat to mount recall campaigns against those who support tax increases to solve the state's $1.75-billion budget problem for fiscal 2008.http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070828/UPDATE/708280424

LANSING -- All that trash coming in from Canada that Michigan politicians have spent years trying to restrain is starting to look like pure gold as a source of alternative energy, Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Tuesday.
"Something that has been a terrible negative for Michigan certainly has the potential of being something we can convert to energy and a positive for our state," she said during a news conference. "We in Michigan are set to be able to capture our resources and our waste."

I always hear clips that are parodies of politicians meant to get laughs. Rush is really good at this. Well with Granholm toy don't need to twist her words or anything. Just take her quotes right out of the paper. A paper that happened to endorse her for governor. When I hear the things she says I swear I am listening to some comedy sketch.

She can't possibly be as bad as King Blago we have here in Illinois. He is now sueing the (democrat) Speaker of the House (at the taxpayers expense of course) because he didn't jump, step, and fetch when he whistled. He got a budget that passed out of both chambers, took money out where he didn't want it spent and put it back in so he could start his universal health care. This program has been VOTED DOWN by our ELECTED REPRESENTAIVES AND SENATORS in a DEMOCRAT led state congress. Why do we even bother voting for our reps and senators if the little dictator is going to just rip up what they pass as a budget and write his own anyway?

Your assessment is spot on. It is pretty sad really. There was an 8 year glimmer of hope when they had Dennis Archer in there, but went right back to the "Woe is the people of Detroit" mentalilty. It's sad to drive through the city and see it in such shambles, knowing how great it really can be. It's like they were defeated during the 67 riots, and never felt much like picking themselves back up. They act vicimtized, and the public school system is falling apart. And what do they have? A Mayor who has personal vendettas against people on the City Council, and instead of trying to work with them, he threatens to do things like close the Detroit Zoo until the Council concedes to his wishes.

Politicians rarely make urban disasters a better place. What is need is more people like Illitch who have the courage to invest in Detroit. Nothing is going to change until people actually want to go to Detroit and that hasn't happened in over 40 years. I have talked to my parents friends who have find memories of going down to Detroit to spend the day walking the streets and going shopping at the Hudson building and other places as well. These days nothing could be further from the truth. People are scared to go downtown. When people go down there to go gambling or go to a game, when they have the attitude like let's get out of Dodge ASAP. That is not going to be changed by government. The only way that is going to get changed is by businesses investing in Detroit.

Gov's cuts don't add up
His health plan takes money from the ill
August 30, 2007
Gov. Blagojevich's ham-handed cuts to the state budget have only reinforced our view that the state can't afford his costly plan to expand health care. In order to free up a half billion dollars for his pet issue, he used his veto pen to slice millions of dollars that were targeted for equally needy health-related goals and safety concerns. The fact that he made those cuts in such a political and inconsistent manner only makes matters worse.
Consider: In the name of expanding health care, he cut $40 million in Medicaid funds to hospitals, $50 million from nursing homes and $2.2 million to add beds at a retirement home for veterans. His cuts to programs for autism, HIV, Alzheimer's disease and sickle cell anemia also contradict his commitment to health care. He also sliced nearly $1.2 million for more lab staff and equipment to help the state prepare for pandemic flu. And after he approved a big raise for himself and lawmakers, he trimmed a modest raise for workers who care for the developmentally disabled.
The governor said he was axing "special pet projects and other spending that we simply can't afford," denying that politics played a role. But how else can he explain some of his cuts? For instance, he funded one half of a bridge replacement near Carol Stream but rejected the other half. He considered one youth mentoring program to be expendable "pork" but spared an even more expensive one. A handicapped-accessible van for one group was sliced but another group's van was saved.
We can't say everything he cut was essential. But neither can the governor say he judged each slice on its merits. His sole consideration seems to have been who proposed the funding. In almost every case, he axed proposals sponsored by House Democrats and Senate Republicans -- two groups that battled him this year. Money for Senate Democrats, House Republicans or the 12 members of an obscure but important legislative panel was generally retained.
Why? Blagojevich needs Senate Democrats and to a lesser extent House Republicans to make sure his veto isn't overridden. And he needs the legislative panel to approve his expansion of health care.
The governor says he is pushing forward with his plans -- without legislative approval -- because he is trying to improve the lives of Illinois citizens. But his methods shouldn't include using taxpayer money to reward friends and punish enemies. And they shouldn't include taking money from one good cause to fund another.

All of this is true. But people won't invest because people are still skiddish to go downtown because of the crime. And that is something the government should be trying to take care of. But the mayor is too busy acting like a 2 year old to do anything constructive.

Yeah the government can do sometime about the crime and address the issue of safety in downtown Detroit. As most people here know, my politics fall left of center, so I am not saying that as some right wing Ronald Reagan disciple. The people of Detroit keep looking to the Mayor to solve all the problem and bring Detroit back to its prosperous past. Well no Mayor will ever be able to do that. Only way that is ever going to happen is if business goes back to Detroit and people actually have a reason to go to Detroit. Ford Field, Fox Theater, the casinos are all part of that. If more of that happened then people would go back to Detroit. Almost every other major American City except Detroit has plenty of things to do downtown and people talk about going down town and spending the day in the city. That is only going to change when there are things to do downtown and that starts with businesses come back to Detroit. The government can help, by doing what it can to make things safer and also by increased funding into the museums downtown. Detroit needs a better Motown Museum, something Ernie Harwell is working on. The DEA is good enough but kiddie corner is the Detroit Museum of history and that is rather pathetic. Belle Isle would use an upgrade as well. Detroit could be a lot better than it is. It could be like the other major cities where people want to go down there and spend the day, but sadly most people don't have any desire to make that effort.

One of the biggest reason that people love to hate on the Detroit sports teams is the reputation that the city has. We still haven't lived down the celebration of 1984.
My point is pretty simple. It is shameless that Detroit is the one major North American City where people don't want to go downtown. People like to blame the idiot Mayor, well no mayor can simply change things. It really rests with the businesses. They need to come back. I know that Detroit has tax revenue issues, but what would also really help is if they increased funding for the museums and renovated Belle Isle.

Well, maybe a mayor couldn't fix everything that is wrong with Detroit, but a good one could at least work toward that goal. Archer had the city starting in the right direction and there were businesses starting to come back. During the last campaign, Kwami made the point of touting all the great things that took place in his first term. What he failed to point out is that most of those were already happening as the result of Dennis Archer's hard work.
The Casinos and the teams are already drawing people down town for entertainment. And the Illiches are pumping money into those areas like crazy. What Detroit needs is more commerce. but who wants to go shopping in Detroit with all the crime? And what business can afford to set up shop in a place with such high taxation?
Tax breaks for businesses and a mayor that wants to stop crime rather than creating it would be a major shot in the arm for this city.

Part of the United States constitution says that you have to be born in this country to become President. Should the states have a similar provision in their state constitutions that you have to be born in that state to be Governor. In ND, I don't agree with everything the Governor does, but he has been very business-friendly. It took a while, but it's showing it's merits now. Our economy is doing very well here, our government has a 500 million dollar budge surplus and new businesses are popping up all over the place. You can't even find a contractor these days, they're all so busy. In some areas, unemployment is nearly nonexistent.

Michigan's problems is less a result of taxation and more of a result that for the last 80 or so years the entire state has been dependent upon one type of industry to keep this state afloat. The same problem has been here when taxation wasn't as high, back when we had a republican governor. The same problem was here. If Michigan ever gets back on track it is going to have a lot to do with taxation, but rather to bring in new types of business. Michigan is a perfect example why trickle down economics is a disaster just waiting to happen.

Economic Diversification has been the goal of our state government for the last couple of decades. In the 70's and 80's, it was all farming...every business was ag-related, and our legislature was mostly made up of, surprise, farmers. When the ag markets went sour, it was finally a wake-up call. I have to hand it to them, they've done a terrific job of diversifying our economy. And they did it without raising taxes.

Michigan never had most people working for the auto companies but they were dependent on them. When the auto companies flourished the other companies flourished because the auto workers had money to spend, when the auto companies struggles so did every one else because they auto workers didn't have money to spend. Our entire economy is tied to the auto industry. I am glad that you guys have a booming diversified economy. I wish that Michigan had that.

I am not sure what Devos could have really done to make Michigan better, but at least we wouldn't have to deal with Granholm.
I believe the answer to Michigan's troubles is to make us less dependent on the auto industry, but I am not sure how we can do that. I don't know how we can bring in new industries that aren't tied to the auto industry. Until that happens, Michigan will stay in trouble.

Our biggest problem in bringing in new business to the state was that stupid "Single Business Tax". Now that that thing is history more and more businesses are looking at the state with a more favorable view.
Unless the stupid politicans impose new heavy taxes on business we should work out of this mess in about five years.

Now therefore be it resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 13, 2007, as Steve Yzerman Day in Michigan. Congratulations to Steve on an exemplary career with the Detroit Red Wings. You have made Detroit and the State of Michigan proud. http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168-23442_25488-160416--,00.html

There is no point in bringing Devos into a thread griping about Granholm and the way she governs, because he was never our Govenor.
That would be like griping about Al Gore when we talk about how the President is handling Immigration.

I know that she has said a lot of stupid things, but this one tops the list.
Maybe so, but at least you aren't stuck with "Ahnold".
The crime has dropped so much in Los Angeles, that the city council now has to examine the pressing issue of not allowing fast food restuarants to build in certain parts of town. Now while I am all for eating healthy, I would think that once the LA City Council finally once and for all tackles and solves the gang problem and other violence in the city, then they can move on to the fast food restaurants.
It is just such a joke. Yeah, it takes a lot of courage to ban a fast food restaurant, but it takes even more guts to put into effect laws that will go a long way into stemming the gang problems that we face out here in LA County. It is not getting better, it is getting worse. The City Council, the Mayor, the county Board of Supervisors, all need to come up with a viable plan that puts enough law enforcement on the streets to tackle what is a huge problem in certain areas of Los Angeles. Once they tackle that problem and the illegal alien problem (like doing away with "sanctuary city" titles) and calling the feds and cooperating with them on their investigations, then maybe, just maybe we might get something done for the people.

I sympathize over your problem. In Michigan, illegal immigration is one issue that doesn't effect most people. Still though, I'd rather have Arnold then Granholm. Unless you live here you really don't understand how bad she is and what an embarrassment she is for this whole state. She constantly says stupid things are her policies are really stupid as well.

She constantly says stupid things are her policies are really stupid as well.
Her health care plan is one of those stupid policies.
Office of the Govenor (http://www.mi.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168--158790--,00.html)
Under the plan, uninsured individuals will have access to private sector insurance plans offered by a newly created "Exchange," which will administer the plan. Premium assistance will be provided on a sliding scale based on income up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level (approximately $40,000 for a family of four). Health insurance products offered by the Exchange will rely on private sector approaches, including managed care with defined networks, benefits that are more comparable to employer sponsored insurance, and small group market plans, cost sharing, and the pre-tax treatment of contributions to reduce cost.
Doesn't she know that the federal government and the IRS are the ones who determines what is tax exempt?
And the idea of calling it an "Exchange" to administer the plan is just another name for "Government Run". And she thinks we common people can't figure that out.

She talked about how all the resources that we have make Michigan an ideal place for alternative energy manufacturing. She mentioned the waves from the Great Lakes, the wind from the Great Lakes and how Dow has invested a lot of money into alternative energy plants at Midland and another company doing the same in Saginaw. I have a real question for Democrats on this board. Democrats are generally in charge in Detroit and Michigan in general when it comes to politics, why aren't the citizens there outraged at their elected officials. It seems they reelect them, and make excuses for them. Whats up with that? Do they hate republicans and dare I say it whites that much that a majority will vote in a crappy democrat or african american person no matter the qualifications or past job they did in their position? What else could it be? I"m serious, someone explain it to me.

I've got another question:
Johnson declared War on Poverty decades ago. What are the BENCHMARKS for victory in this war? How long are we going to be stuck in Detroit taking casualties for the sake of somebody NOT US? This occupation of Detroit is obviously causing more poverty elsewhere (especially in my bank account). Shouldn't we get Petraeus into Detroit to design the same type of Surge tactics they've been using to get control over Baghdad and Fallujah and places like that? At least send in Bremmer to guide Michigan to a new constitution that would provide some measure of human prosperity to all groups in the state. Or maybe we should just go ahead and divide the state -- the original boundaries are so OBVIOUSLY artificial and non-functional, ignoring all kinds of internecine strife.
WAR ON POVERTY: occupy America PERMANENTLY in order to win it.
When are people in Michigan going to wake up to the total fiction of the DNC's little "war on poverty" that taxes the middle class in order to ENRICH THE GUBMIT?

The War on Poverty resulted in a huge drop in poverty...
NO it did NOT. It resulted in one hell of a JOB LOSS, inflation from hell, dispossession and homelessness.
And we've NOW got more living under the official poverty line than ever before, because income NEVER keeps pace with cost of living.
Check the figures for family income. and compare one POTUS to another. On average, family income levels have INCREASED under GOP admins, decreased under DNC -- because of two factors -- labor costs passed onto consumers as increases in the cost of goods and services and increased taxes taken out of family income which increases far more slowly -- especially for salaried mid- to bottom-tier white collar -- than costs.
Polkfan
February 1st, 2008, 1:19 am
More in raw numbers, but not more as a percentage, which is the relevant figure.
The war on poverty did not create in inflation in 1970s, the rising price of oil did.
As for family income, it's been on the decline since the 1970s no matter which party holds the White House. In fact, the only president who saw family incomes increase in any year during his term in office was Clinton.

That is the press release from the governors office.
The report (http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/uploadedFiles/Grading-the-States-2008.pdf) actually says:
The Battle of Lansing, as many have come to remember the state’s bloody budget deliberations last year, drew national attention to Michigan’s economic woes. And there’s no question that fiscal austerity has hurt the state’s capacity to deliver basic services. The workforce has been drastically reduced, and Michigan officials worry that agency staff reductions have gone beyond fat and deep into bone and marrow. No new workers are likely to arrive soon. As the automobile industry continues to suffer, revenue streams are in trouble and the state’s credit ratings have dropped. And for all the emergency moves, including a substantial tax increase, Michigan is far from structural balance between revenues and expenditures.
Michigan is on page 62. :D
