Since when was the Enterprise made on Earth? It's not an planitary capable ship so it has to orbit.

Probably have shipyards that hold its awkward frame in place. Like any normal boat. They had that Klingon Bird of Prey flying through Earth's atmosphere with no problem in "The Voyage Home", why not the Enterprise?

*puts geek hat on*

I recall a couple episodes of the original Star Trek that say otherwise.

Specifically the episode Tomorrow is Yesterday where the crew travels back in time to 1960's Earth and the Enterprise is seen in the sky.

*realizes geek hat is stuck on*

It's a damned movie, for the love of Mike!!

We gonna argue whether time travel follows "Tomorrow is Yesterday" rules or "City on the Edge of Forever" rules next??

I've seen flame wars on another message board over things like this that make the ones here seem tame.

Hey Im just trying to be accurate. But then again, I now think that the MEANING was to say. "Under Construction" not meaning that it was built on earth. Present middle finger here. Thanka very much

Gotta be better than Oliver Stone's "Star Trek XIII, the Romulan/Vulcan Conspiracy". ;)

The Enterprise was built in San Fran but assembled in space... http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/USS_Enterprise_%28NCC-1701%29

The vessel registered NCC-1701, which was constructed in San Francisco and launched in 2245, was christened the Enterprise. Larry Marvick was one of the designers of the Enterprise. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday", "Is There in Truth No Beauty?")

According to The Making of Star Trek, the Enterprise was built on Earth but assembled in space.

I read in the TV Guide Magazine that the USS Enterprise was made at area 51. It seems like JJA is a Trek revisionist.

Let's have Tim Burton make the next Star Trek movie.
That should be fascinating.

Can't wait to see it - unlike a lot of Trekkies, I have no problem with reimagining the franchise. It has worked for Bond and Battlestar, why not Trek? Besides, most of the folks that fall on their sword over this stuff have way too much time on their hands - but, but in Episode 4 of season 5, Spock said he didn't like orange. He would never have an orange painting in his bedroom - whatever, just enjoy the show.

In the trailer it seemed like people were walking on it in several directions. I'm guessing it's in a dry dock in space.

AARGH, I can't find it! When "Muppets Tonight" was on, they had an episode where Beaker went on a "Star Trek" cruise. George Takei was on the ship and basically bored everyone with the same stories. It was hilarious.

I forgot to mention. At the end, Sulu decided that he was the ranking officer on board the ship, but then found out that he was outranked by Captain Kangaroo.

wow you guys are serious...

hey did they have any special, zero gravity crappers on that thing? DO they have seatbelts so that if the ship is struck under attack it doesn't throw the person (or the 'payload') all over the john?

In one of the books it has the 1701 Being built in a orbitial spaceyard.

I think it was mentioned in the book "The Making of Star Trek" by Gene Roddenberry.

If the Enterprise was built in an orbital dockyard with an atmosphere, it would make sense. It was a Constitution Class vessel. There were older Saladin, Excelsior and Miranda-class ships that were built before the Constituion Class.

One would have to assume that some sort of orbital drydock would have been built for these previous starship versions. The move from an open space drydock to contained drydock would also be the next logical step.
