The New Dollar (kinda like New Coke) should bear the likenesses of President Nixon and Barney Frank.

One relented to the financial community and finally gave us fiat currency.

The other has gone to the mat for that same bunch so they could turn a fast Old Dollar through shady accounting practices and always generous executive 'compensation' schemes.

I agree with you about the lack of constitutional commitment by most Republicans (including Senator McCain); but, there is still a difference between someone who is a lazy nere-do-well when it comes to misconstructing or abusing the federal's power and someone like Senator Obama who is eager and energetic to do the same.

In football a "prevent defense" is always about giving up ground.

In politics it may be about nothing more than buying time.

I'm sure he does.

And I respect McCain too. All other things aside, he's lite on earmarks — that alone has gotta count for something.

It's just ... why a US Senator at all? Ever since the effects of the 17th Amendment finally took hold as the old culture of the Senate finally died out the only thing that body seems to produce is mendacity.

Or is it that there just isn't some other place able to produce less desirable candidates still, so the powers that be find a way to settle with least?

I respect McCain for his stance on earmarks, but the primary objection to earmarks is that each expenditure is not voted on on it's merit. Not all earmarks are bridge to nowhere boondoggles. One of the earmarks on Obama's list is a new water tower for a town in his state. I don't have a problem with a town getting a new water tower if they need it. It was likely part of a block grant to the state and was money that would be spent anyway, the use of the funds are simply being specified by the earmark.

I don't know that taking no earmarks at all really should be the benchmark. The system obviously needs to be reformed in some way, refusing all earmarks is ok for taking a stand and raising awareness of the problem, but it's a little more complex then earmarks=bad.

I must not understand earmarks. I heard they don't increase the budget by one dime, it just allows a Congressman to put some money in his District as opposed to a bureaucrat deciding. Is this true?:eh:

I keep hearing over and over again that it is only 1% of the budget.

Seems to me that all these people who rail against earmarks are like the carbon tax people.

Here we have all these corporations straight dumping toxic chemicals and waste into our oceans and clearly poisoning our earth in a matter that anyone can see, but instead of attacking a real deadly problem like that, they want to tax some carbon.

well

Here we have an unconstitutional central bank giving us a fake paper currency and charging us interest on it, meaning money = debt, but instead of attacking that they scratch for the pennies that fall off the cart.

Take all the earmarks away and we're still a game we're meant to lose.

If you look at some of the more slimy ones, they are clearly things that the government shouldn't be spending public funds on, hence the objection to being able to approve or reject on merit. As a budget buster, no.

The figure I heard was $100 billion a year. Not chump change to an ordinary citizen, but not enough to "pay" for any additional spending as certain politicians would have you believe. Especially true when you can't count on that full $100 billion in the first place.

Most on here oppose him for one reason and one reason only which is the traditional conservative foreign policy. I saw people here say they would support any Rep. nominee BUT Ron Paul and some even said they would vote for Hillary before they'd vote for Ron Paul, now we're supposed to swallow OUR principles to vote for John "Gang of 14" McCain?

He's far from a messiah, we just got excited(some overly so I will admit) that we found someone that we agree with on the vast majority of issues while others here are supporting someone who is blaming the very foundation of our economy<capitalism and free markets> for our problems and if that isn't a **** salad I've not seen one in 47 years of living!

are you sure about all of that? Cause at least one of them I know Ron did. He was very good at saying one thing and doing another. Can you say pork?

Your candidate can't even be honest about the nature of pork spending. Pledging to refuse all earmarks doesn't mean the money doesn't get spent, it means he isn't responsible for determining how it gets spent. It still goes to the state, it doesn't add a cent to the budget that hasn't already been allocated.

On the basis of keeping the government from spending money on things that it should not, McCain's stance is a good thing, but in terms of reducing the budget, it means absolutely nothing. It simply gives him a position of strength to come from in terms of being a crusader against government waste. McCain is selling earmark reform as a way to "pay" for more spending. That is dishonest and perpetuates a myth of how "pork" projects are paid for.

Earmarks are only $100 billion a year, and come from money that is already allocated, they are NOT A BUDGET BUSTER and is small fry compared to the cuts that Ron Paul and others have proposed. Touting McCain's position on earmarks in the face of the massive amount of spending that both major candidates have endorsed in the last few weeks, is about as week a position as you can argue from.

Paul Asks President for Emergency Declaration

September 21, 2005

Washington, DC: Congressman Ron Paul has joined Texas Governor Rick Perry in requesting a federal state of emergency declaration for the entire state of Texas. Under a federal declaration of emergency, federal assistance in many forms becomes available to the people of Texas. This assistance includes Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Hazard Mitigation, SBA disaster loans, and USDA loans, in addition to assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security in general.
President Bush declared the emergency today, pledging a stepped-up federal response to what may be the biggest Hurricane ever to hit Texas.
Paul, in a letter to the president, stressed that all 254 counties in Texas likely will be affected by the hurricane, causing the displacement of thousands or even millions of citizens. Galveston and Brazoria counties in particular may be hard hit, and will need the coordination of federal, state, and local disaster services to ensure the fastest possible recovery.
http://www.house.gov/paul/press/press2005/pr092105.htm

Well when Paul was begging for FEMA and the FEDS to do whatever they do during and after hurricanes in the entire state of Texas it was merely to get some of the taxes Texans had paid returned to them!

Granted it was in between bitching and whining about how FEMA and the Feds intervening on the rest of the Gulf Coast after Katrina was a waste of a) Taxpayer dollars from other states, b) going to be borrowed from China, or c) just plain printed! As well as complaining that his constituents, and I quote..

Ron Paul's Texas Straight Talk - A weekly Column
Responding to Katrina

September 12, 2005
In several disasters that have befallen my Gulf Coast district, my constituents have told me many times that they prefer to rebuild and recover without the help of federal agencies like FEMA, which so often impose their own bureaucratic solutions on the owners of private property.

Sure I did...and I bet the people he represents would have liked to have the coast guard handy if needed...

Coast Guard , Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security in general.

Don't act like it was just for FEMA....It was a declaration

Congressional Office Available for Assistance
UPDATE: The Congressional office in Victoria is now available for constituent assistance at 361-576-1231
Washington , DC – Congressman Ron Paul continues to be gravely concerned about the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike in Texas and getting help to everyone affected is his utmost priority.
Congressional offices have been staffed over the weekend for constituents in the 14th district. Those in need of information or assistance from the congressional office are advised to call 361-576-1231 and we will do our very best to help. The Congressman’s office is acting as a liaison between Federal agencies and constituents to ensure that available assistance is as accessible as possible, and that FEMA and other government agency activities are appropriate, efficient and helpful to Texans. In addition, Congressman Paul’s office seeks to ensure that private aid organizations are also allowed to help.
In addition:
The Red Cross can be contacted at 866-GET-INFO (438-4636) or TX211
FEMA can be contacted at (800) 621-FEMA or at www.fema.gov
http://www.house.gov/paul/press/press2008/pr091508.htm

Also he dosent seem to mind the Feds sending in FEMA when its Texas, the rest of the Gulf Coast.. and all of a sudden he is worried about...

The other side claims we need to pump billions of new dollars into the very federal agency that failed (FEMA), while giving it extraordinary new police powers. Both sides support more authoritarianism, more centralization, and even the imposition of martial law in times of natural disasters.
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congrec2005/cr091505.htm

Then again maybe DR! Paul is worried about jackbooted Federal thugs in the rest of the Gulf Coast, but feels Texas needs some good old extraordinary new police powers, more authoritarianism, more centralization, and even the imposition of martial law in times of natural disasters.

Also he is on the record claiming that other states getting this help are basically either recieving taxes taken from other states, borrowed money from China, or freshly printed greenbacks! All bad for the economy and the U.S. in general.

Apparently thats fine for Texas, oh wait, my bad, when its Texas recieving Federal funds its just tax dollars that were taken from them being returned! So its Ok!

Last week, Congress passed a $23 billion FEMA disaster recovery plan - money his constituents need. It was attached to a bigger law - one that kept the government running but also funded stuff like Homeland Security grants and prison sex abuse prevention programs. Ron Paul has opposed stuff like that for 30 years. And just two weeks after parts of his district were flattened by the storm, he stuck to his principle.

He still urged people to try to get help from FEMA....Just w/No prison sex abuse prevention programs included

How many here is going to buy a horse and buggy if President Obama nationalizes the oil companies?

We have a winner.

I have no problem with people accepting the subsidies they pay for. I have a problem with the subsidies existing. When the government hands out money who should I be angry at? The people taking the money or those taking back a small share of what was taken from them?

He's da man!

w00t!I don't really consider him to be the man, except that he's practically the only person in our entire congress with actual principles that are in line with our founding principles. He expects the constitution to be followed to the letter. He doesn't think there is any crisis great enough to excuse the government from expanding its power, as it is always prone to do. And he is correct that as government expands its power, it expands its spending and debt, to the point now that we are on the verge of economic collapse. Who can possibly argue with these points? That's pretty much all the man has been saying.

Personally there are greater libertarian minds, people like Rothbard, now deceased, and others. Paul is an icon because he is in a position of great power and, unlike others with equal or greater power, he uses that power to promote the common good. He doesn't abuse his power. He doesn't aggrandize himself. He is constant as the north star. And I and other libertarians and constitutionalists revere him because we more than most people understand the corrupting influence of power. So in that sense, given human nature, he's almost like a godsend. Few people have attained his stature and not been corrupted by it.

Forgive me if that offends you.
