Hey Ski,

I wanted to share this with you.

I just got done watching FSN talking about spring training and Leyland said that Inge has been one of his pet projects during spring training. I just thought you would be interested in hearing that.

He talked about how the amount of errors he committed was unacceptable. He said that most of that is because Brandon thinks he can make every play and many times trying to make those plays hurts the team. He said he just needs to calm down, concentrate on fielding fundamentals and not try and make every play. He said that Brandon is a good fielder and he could become a great fielder. When asked about Leyland about Inge's hitting and if he is working on that, Leyland said some, but not much. With his hitting the best thing is to just leave him alone. He had a huge increase in his batting stats last year. He said the best thing to do is not to put pressure on him. He just needs to relax and hit the ball. He thinks that in the future we will see 40 Hr/.300 batting average type of seasons out of him.

We'll see if all of his work pays off. If not he'll be chasing A-Rod in the lead for errors by a thirdbaseman.

If you look at his career stats every year since he stopped being a catcher his stats have improved. Last season he bat .253 with 27 homers and 83 RBI's. Not great stats but not terrible either, especially for someone who is usually batting at the bottom of the lineup. Sure, he not great, but he's a work in progress. It has to be remembered that he started off as a catcher and when we got Pudge we had to figure out what we were going to do with him.

Heck, I've been a fan for years and I am not even sure that I know the lineup. It would help if Leyland was consistent with it and was not always tinkering with it. Hey, give the poor a guy a break and start of with something that doesn't change so often, like the pitching rotation.

I don't know if he has a blood clot or not. That is just one of the spring training rumors that ESPN is talking about. He might just have a sore arm and will be able to be back in May.

If he does have a blood clot, for his own health his season might be over before it even started.

Well you know how ESPN is, they always like to talk about rumors.

Here's what the Tigers website says.

Rogers was to visit a specialist on Thursday to further determine the cause for what he told teammates felt like a strong case of dead arm. The Tigers are cautiously optimistic that it isn't a major injury, but until they receive the test results, they're in limbo.

"We're hopeful it's not a long-term thing," said Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski. "But we'll know in the next couple days."

The 41-year-old Rogers has been battling the flu for the past several days. After recovering from that, however, his arm wasn't feeling well. Rogers told teammates that his arm was feeling heavy.

"His arm was feeling like a dead-arm period," closer Todd Jones said, "but it was more intense than he had felt before." http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070329&content_id=1864954&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=det

No, I didn't get home from work in time to see it. What did I miss?

They talked to Draper for a bit are part of it was about the cheap shot on him in 96 and how he thought he would get some stitches and get right back out of the ice, but that didn't happen and he had to miss the rest of the season, the he talked about the infamous day in March of the following year. He said that the first three games were rather mild, but that he had a very bad feeling about the game the night before and didn't sleep well and just before the game the only person who noticed that he wasn't quite right was McCarty (probably his closest friend in hockey at time) and as they went on the ice he told him don't worry about it, Lemieux won't lay one fighter on you tonight.

Hey ski, check this out.

On June 30, 1993, Detroit picked up a minor-leaguer from the then-Winnipeg Jets for future considerations.

"We ended up giving them a buck,'' said longtime Detroit exec Jimmy Devellano.

The return on that investment was center Kris Draper. Nobody forecast him as the glue to the "Crash Line," which helped check Detroit into three Cups in four years.

"Doug MacLean actually did that deal,'' Devellano said. "He was our assistant general manager at the time, and he was running our farm team at Adirondack. Doug knew Draper was a good minor-leaguer. So Draper went to Adirondack for three-quarters of a year and then came up to us.''http://espn.go.com/nhl/draft2003/columns/wheatley_tom/1570024.html

Actually its a bit of a controversy. Apparently the deal was made may back in March and once again Yzerman played a big deal about it. Part of the deal was that it wasn't going to be released until after the playoffs. Maltby didn't want it to be a distraction, but apparently it got leaked.

I suspect that Bob**** also had a lot to do with getting it done. He has said all year that although the euro-twins and Homer is our scoring line, the Maltby/Clearly/Draper line is the heart and soul of the team, I know that he didn't want to break that line up. That line is having a greater impact than it has since McCarty left and maybe it is having an even bigger impact than when McCarty was here. I have seen that line start games. I never thought Draper and Maltby would be on the ice when the game started.

He just goes out there and does his job which is doing forechecks and killing penalties and occasionally chipping in goals. Of course with the goals that Draper and Clearly have been getting, his line has become quite formidable. Then when you add what it costs to put that line together I think that its one of one most cost effective lines in all of the hockey.

They are saying that he's a younger version on Verlander. As for Porcello, his ability is not in question. He's good enough to go No. 2 and there are even some scouts who'd consider taking him No. 1. But his bonus demands, especially for a high school right-handed pitcher -- the biggest risk pick there is -- could very well force him to slide really far...maybe even as far as the University of North Carolina...http://draft.mlblogs.com/

ESPN is saying that the reason he dropped so much is his signability, many clubs didn't think that they could get him signed. If he doesn't sign by August 15, then he won't play in the minors, at least not this year, and will be headed to college ball. I hope that Dombromski can get him signed.

According to ESPN a group called Baseball America had him listed as the #4 prospect in the draft. He is represented by Scott Boras nad he usually gets his prospects more than the slot value, so many teams shy away from dealing with him. However we have dealt with him before Verlander, Maybin and Miller all were represented by him. Anyways we have till August 15th to get him signed, otherwise he's headed to college.

I never understood why he was so willing to put so much money into the Red Wings, but not the Tigers.

When Dombromski came aboard he told Illitch that our farm system was a mess and that we needed to put a lot more money into it and we have and we are seeing the results. And unlike other teams we usually don't trade our prospects, we trade for them. With Shef being the notable exception.

Yankees pay attention, this is how its done, you find a way to get top notch pitching prospects and then you groom them. Picking up pitching greats who are the their prime isn't the way to a championship.

Yep, many of the baseball analysts think that in 3 of the last 4 drafts that we have been able to get the best pitching prospect. Verlander and Miller are without question the best prospects in 2004 and 2006. As for this year years draft, Porcello is probably not the best prospect, but he is near the best. According to the list that I saw at ESPN about the best prospects they had Porcello at #4 overall and the #2 in pitching.

Getting those kind of pitching prospects 3 out of 4 years, I would think that they might be on to something. That still leaves us with Bonderman and Robertson, and don't forget about Durbin, she is has not been lights out, but the organization is really high on him.

The future looks bright.

Yeah, I saw your comments in the Costner thread. When you said that it wasn't because he was in a Tiger uniform, that you liked it so much, I said "Yeah, right" or something like that. Then I hunted down that pic and posted it in that thread, but apparently you had already left for the weekend.

Honestly....the fact that he was a Tiger is the reason I like the movie so much :))

Schneider cashed in and went to Anaheim. Then about an hour later we signed Rafalski, he's suppose to be a really good defenseman and was born and raised in Dearborn.

Damn...I liked Schneider.....but I cannot wait to see what this new guy does! It will be nice to have a homegrown player on the team.

I liked him to, but Holland said that he wasn't going to give him more than 5 mil a year and the Ducks offered him 2 years/11.75 mil. The guys that we signed put up good numbers for the Devils last year and he signed for 5 years/30 mil.

In other news, there is this one particular free agent that I hope that the Wings go after, do you know who I am talking about?

Thats a good point and I think of that to when I heard this.

Over the last week or so I have read several articles about how Holland is having talks with Peter Forsberg. They are looking for a top 6 forward and the picking are slim.

Well they are looking for someone to center the 2nd line. Forsberg and Selanne are about the only players out there who could step in that role. Most think that Selanne is going to retire. That really aren't many options out there for a top 6 forward.

They might not. It is possible that a deal might not get done. I am sure Holland will only sign him if he can get a discounted price on him. His production is way down and he has injury issues. Still he's friends with several Wings, still not sure how that happened. And they might have some influence in getting him here.

He's been good friends with Holmstrom and Lidstrom for over a decade. I really don't know how that happened. And he's been a mentor for nearly 5 years to Zetterberg.

I swear if this happen, we might as well become the Sweedish National team. :)) :)) :))

Affordability is a relative term, what is affordable to one is not to another. I went to their website and went to the buy tickets section and it shows tickets still available in from $15 to $60. Of course then there is concessions, parking, etc...

Yeah when TC and I went to a game against St Louis it was only $38. a ticket, but you're right...parking downtown is at least $12.00, and the price of food and drinks at a Major League Ballpark is highway robbery.

Highest contract given to a high school kid, just broke the previous record that was held by John Beckett, who everyone is comparing him to. The contract was also a major league contract, first time the Tigers have ever given one to a minor leaguer, which means that he has to be in the majors by no later than 3 years and he immediately gets put on the 40 man roster. I hope that he lives up to the hype. Baseball analysts are already crying foul. Detroit was 3 solid starters pitchers at 24, another promising one at 21, and then we got this guy at 18. 2010 rotation Bonderman, Verlander, Miller, Porcello, and someone else. Looking ahead they think the first 4 could all be #1's on most teams.
