my husband had to work in Phoenix...wasn't going to be able to make it home for Christmas. Matter of fact, he worked all day Christmas Eve and again on Christmas morning. Since he couldn't come home, I told him that I would go to Phoenix. He was so excited. He (sort of) attempted to talk me out of it, b/c he knew he'd be working so much, but I could tell he was happy not to be alone out there for Christmas...........
so he had a surprise for me.

Hubby and I had a dog a long time ago, a siberian husky... Hubby's work schedule required that he get up at around 4:30am and so the dog got into a schedule of needing to go out at 4:30am. :evil:

On weekends, when hubby was off, the dog was still on that schedule and he'd sneak past my side of the bed and go push (he didn't scratch, he pushed) hubby then whisper in his ear, 'woooo'. That's pretty sad when even the dog knows not to wake you up. :redface:

I live on black land ... we always have foundation problems.
nothing ever too major though. not as bad as some others have it.

I've noticed that...when I travel to SA for whatever reason, all the radio stations seem to run more ads for foundaton repair than they do for car dealers...and THAT is scary!


Why is that? (foundations coming undone after a relatively short time), when houses/ranches built before the need for slabs became code?


Weirdness I tell you..must have someting to do with the impending doom of 2012 and the end of times.

ours honestly isn't as bad as some people.... we knew we were on black land when we built.
it's just much nicer when we get rain ....

We, on the other hand, set on caliche and limestone shale.

One of the roads I run on is caliche for part of the way ... I love running on that.
black land ... well, first of all, it is black. and hard.
this is going to sound a bit like a contradiction, b/c it's also "gummy" ... which doesn't exactly go with hard ... but it is. go figure. a thick hard gum ... if that makes any sense.
when it doesn't rain, it gets nice deep thick cracks in it.... the best thing about black land though is that stickers don't grow on it and we don't have the scorpions that people on sand get. :)

Maybe I'll check with one of my geology nerd clients about the surface differences...I do (sort of) remember the black almost clay surface and substrates.

FWIW - at a house I owned years ago, we decided to install a fence in the backyard...I tried with a post hole digger, no luck - we hired a guy with a small auger on the back of a pickup, and when his truck hit the caliche, the truck raised up and started to spin. :eek:

Ended up having to have a truck that bored out telephone poles and water wells come out just to dig holes into the limestone slate 6 inches under the topsoil just to put a fence up...

yep....I understand that all too well.

let me know what your friend says about the land ... black land is not really like a clay, it's harder, but in some ways it would be similar because of the gumminess. (is that a word??) :))

Around here it depends on exactly where you build as to if you end up on limestone (stable) or sand and/or clay (unstable).
