Serious question for the Texans here or anyone whos been on cruises out of Galveston:

Vacationing down that way in a few weeks. Whats the best means of transportation from GB International to Galveston without renting a car. I don't want to leave a rental sitting for 7 days unattended and it seems no one will let you rent at airport and turn in, in Galveston.

Also, when staying in Galveston, any "crack" or "hourly"" type hotels to stear clear of around the beach?

Thanks for any input.

hunter, I just read this....give me some time to think about this and work on it. I have a friend who has a home on Tiki Island, close to Galveston, so I'll ask her of any places you might want to steer clear of.
Transportation in Houston w/out a car is NOT good....but I'll see what I can think of.
Will you just be in Galveston overnight? or for the afternoon or what?
you know you'll be darn close to NASA and the Kemah Boardwalk. Just wondering if you're going to have any extra time while in town.....

We will be at sea for 6 days, then in Galveston for 3, so yes, plenty of time for sights. Wife was looking at a hotel on a wharf which sounds fun we're just not sure if all spots are "good" so to speak.

I think I found a shuttle (almost affordable taxi for that distance) from GBI to Galv..Not sure though..am trying to see if any puddle jumpers drop into Galv.

Any info is very much appreciated :D

this was a great place for this question.....let me work on it.
are your plane tickets already purchased? are they part of the package deal w/ the cruise? The reason I'm asking is b/c GBI is way NW of Houston, and Hobby Airport is on the SE side of Houston. Hobby would put you much closer to Galveston, plus it's a smaller/easier airport.....

just talked to my friend w/ the house on Tiki Island.....she says as long as you use common sense and stay pretty much where the action is, you should not have any trouble. The Sea Wall is fine. The Strand is fine. The only place you may find trouble is if you drive way down Broadway (which she says is a shame b/c there are some great restaurants down that way), but you'd have to be way down Broadway away from all the action before things get bad...........and chances are you are just not gonna be doing that anyway.

I assume you did not give Juan an eyeful of that which us mortals have begged to see for generations...

translated: you didn't flash him, did ya?

I only ask because I did that once...heard our car pulling into the carport, and in an attempt at humor, exposed certain body parts just kind of peeking around the doorjamb.

At this time, I found out the wife had a female friend in the car with her....

Of course, in retrospect, I played this out ALL wrong...because nothing happened after the laughing stopped....

An old Texan went to the local church and asked to join.
The preacher said, 'OK, but you have to pass a small Bible test first.'
The first Question is 'Where was Jesus born?'
The man answered ,' Longview .'
The preacher said. 'Sorry...you can't join our church.'
Soooooo....he went to another church and asked to join.
The preacher said, 'We would love to have you, but you have to pass
a Bible test first. Where was Jesus born?'
The man said. ' Tyler .'
The preacher said, 'Sorry...you can't join our church.'
Soooo....he goes to another church and asks to join.
The preacher said, 'That's great; we welcome you with open arms.'
The man said, 'I don't have to pass no Bible test first?'
The preacher said, 'No.'
The man said, 'Can I ask you a question?'
The preacher said, 'Sure.'
The man said, 'Where was Jesus born?'
The preacher said, ' Palestine .'
The man mumbled to himself, 'I knew it was in East Texas somewhere.'

this friend of mine was telling me about a family trip they took once when he was a boy. Well, actually his wife was telling the story, b/c it's not one of his favorites. Anyway, he's old, like me, so his family trip back in the day consisted of long hours in the family car. At one point his mom stuck her head out the front window....wanting to get a better look at whatever she was looking at, he stuck his head out the back window. Only to find that his mom was NOT sightseeing, but instead throwing up. Well, doesn't take a genius to figure out physics and his location to his mother to figure out what happened next. :)) :)) :))

indian paintbrushes look similar to bluebonnets except they are a reddish orange in color....every once in a while you'll find a beautiful yellow one, just like every once in a while you'll find a whitebonnet, instead of a blue one.

we had a German Shepherd (well, a shepherd/collie mix, but body style was definitely shepherd) many years ago in California...big dog...dangerous to kids only when she got out of the yard without a leash...she flattened one kid who made the near-fatal mistake of calling her name...hit the kid full-speed and put him on the ground hard...before she started licking him to death.

I got racially profiled by a cop the other day. Yep, Texas the police state.

So? So is everone else on the planet....Law, policy, or no, until police are replaced with machinery that has no collections of historical facts we call memories, no individual reaction to group stimuli, etc, then profiling is a simple fact of life...I suggest understanding the racial (and other) profiling is an extension of associative heuristics, and I would suggest learning to accept it as a part of the human experience.

I get racially/socially profilied daily...so does Rick Perry....as does the cleaning lady at the restaurant next door....until we all become blind and deaf, certain salient cues will be noticed, and our reactions to those cues may or may not interfere with our actual conduct...

Life does not have an ignore button, Czzzaar...took me a LONG time to realize this....

morning wire *manly slap on shoulders*

maybe if we were pro athletes, you could touch my butt it your wanted...as long as it was a slightly painful pat on the ass, and not a gentle caress....

Nah...

I guess we won't be discussing the time we all played flag football....at the nudist colony.

Made for some very interesting tackles...the QB was none too happy about the arrangement, thus the shotgun formation was used most of the time.

trust me....you ain't...

Actually, we did have a rather attractive female as the center...but every time she bent over to snap the football, a fight broke out as to who would be quarterback...It was kind of embarassing, really, as the other team's defense won the fight...the referee's were going to throw penalty flags, but no one knew where they left them....

that explains the reason why no one would volunteer to be the QB while I was the center.....

btw: one of my not too well known talents. I actually throw a heck of a mean spiral w/ the football.............

Texans...just some random thoughts about yesterday - ignore if you wish...

- yesterday's drive TO the gig was mostly on Texas 158, from Midland to Ballinger....most beautiful and peaceful stretch of road I've been on in a while...not much traffic, deer crossing the road (in broad daylight), literally hundreds of hawks...
- Real towns like Bangs, Ballinger, Santa Anna, others....US flags flying everywhere. People actually speaking to each other using terms like "sir" and "ma'am" ...
- The gig was a fund raiser for the Brown County Boys and Girls Club - held at a HUGE horse ranch outside of Early....people donating thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars...everyone seemed to have a good time, a whole bunch of drunks, no fights, hassles, no stupidity, just people having a good time for a good cause, giving away their hard earned money to those who could benefit more ...
- I got up yesterday morning at 0630...got home this morning at 0630...stopped once on the way home to reload the coffee barrel...the lady behind the counter says "no charge, just be careful."

THAT is what Texas is all about....
