I've seen some buckles (usually worn by those who can't tell the difference between a bull and a goat) that were essentially pie plates attached to a belt...if these geniuses sneezed, they could cut themselves in half....

I usually wear a buckle shaped like an acoustic guitar (very rare...only 100 made from the cast 25-30 years ago) or a Montana silversmith buckle with the emblem removed....got a couple others, but they are either collectables or gifts that are just not my preference.

One ol gal I know used to call those stupidly big buckles "tombstones for the dead"...every once in a while she would refer to someone as "Jesus"...but I never asked.

Hey Wire...was doing some research on the "vintage" FG series...as much as you seem to hold them in disdain (please correct me if I'm wrong...that's just the impression I got), all I ever found in the way of reviews on them was that their sound is unsurpassed in a guitar in that price range and to never get rid of one!

Plus I can't afford a Martin...and I saw lots of bad things about their customer support when things went wrong.

So I guess I'll be looking for a good guitar tech...

Disdain - heck no! Am am quite a fan of most Yamaha instruments (anyone say C7 grand piano?)

My only point was that Yamaha guitars are not considered "collectible" by most, therefor the pricing/external value of older Yamaha guitars is considerably lower than many lesser quality but well branded counterparts.

I think it all comes down to what your ears and hands tell you... collectibility and external value aside, if you think its worth fixing up, then go for it! There is a certain intrinsic (you know this) attachment we make to instruments that surpasses market value....

FWIW #1: Many of the Yamaha FG series are outSTANDING instruments in almost every classification....they don't hold their investment or resale value well, but if that's not an issue for you, then by all means get yours fixed.

FWIW #2: Even the higher end brand names (Martin, Gibson, et al) have had their (really bad years" in which most of their products from those eras would not pass muster today. Fender did it, Vox amps, they all have gone thru it, and unless mistaken in EVERY case the quality issues were caused by accountants, lawyers, and unions, and not by the actual people making the instruments.

FWIW #3: How well it gets fixed up depends on who does it....If resources are not a major concern, contact Gruhn Guitars in Nashville or the list of folks I posted before...

Sorry for any misunderstanding....

In my discussion with Tex, I forgot to wish the top of the day to my friends here - I apologize!

Tex, look at Erlewine Guitars in Austin, Charlie's Guitar Shop in Dallas, Joe Shepard at N-Tune Music here in Midland, or for a truly unique experience, Mike Stevens in Alpine....

There may be...but everyone I have talked to says the best work is done by the folks I mentioned....

I should comment - I talked with the Midland fellow I mentioned on the phone earlier, explaining your plight....he mentioned that Mike Stevens (Alpine) doesn't repair anything not of his manufacture anymore, unless its a pet project for a near priceless isntrument (like an original Flying V or a 1913 Gibson Parlour guitar...that sort of thing)....

You don't need encouragement, Mel...you are one of the strongest personalities out there, a definate babe regardless of hair length, smart as a whip, and rock steady in the world....if anyone has a problem with your hair length, then that's not your problem...its yours, not a community process....

Wear it how you wish, and wear it with pride...If the shots you provided as examples earlier are accurate, then that is a VERY flattering look for you....

A short historical perspective of one of the previous owners of my home:

Kenneth Mills Regan (March 6, 1893 - August 15, 1959) was a U.S. Representative from Texas.

Born in Mount Morris, Illinois, Regan attended the public schools and Vincennes (Indiana) University. During the First World War served as a flyer in the United States Army Signal Corps. In 1920 engaged in the real estate business and as an oil operator in Pecos, Texas. Alderman of the city of Pecos. He served as mayor of Pecos 1929-1932. He served as member of the State senate 1933-1937. During the Second World War served as an intelligence officer in the Air Corps and was discharged with the rank of captain. He moved to Midland, Texas, and continued oil operations.

Regan was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert Ewing Thomason. He was reelected to the Eighty-first, Eighty-second, and Eighty-third Congresses, and served from August 23, 1947, to January 3, 1955. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1954 to the Eighty-fourth Congress. Representative of Texas railroads in Washington, D.C.. He died in Santa Fe, N.Mex., on August 15, 1959. He was interred in Resthaven Memorial Park, Midland, Texas.

When we did a title search some years ago, we checked phone books, city hall records, etc....an elderly lady at the city library asked our address, and she said "Oh! The old Regan house..." That matched the name on the title history. We have verified with the Tax Office and platt records offices this was the Senator's home.

A little digging around, asking some old timers, and there ya go.

What's this "shower" you speak of?

I took a GI bath ... Deb caught a shower at the ER (she worked last nite)...

How did it happen? There are 2 prevailing theories:

1) this is the last of the original water pipes when the place got plumbing in the late 30s'/early 40s... (we still have the foundation outline where the outhouse used to be...)

2) There has been a slight seismic shift in the area in the past 2 years....every house/office within 500 ft of here in every direction has reported plumbing problems in the past 48 months....also, the house converted to office immediately next door has actually had to be re-leveled within the past year....

I tend to think it was a combination.

An 86-year-old man went to his doctor for his quarterly check-up. The doctor asked him how he was feeling, and the 86-year-old said ,"Things are great and I've never felt better. I now have a 20 year-old bride who is pregnant with my child. So what do you think about that, Doc ?"

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began to tell a story.

"I have an older friend , much like you, who is an avid hunter. He never misses a season. One day he was setting off to go hunting. He was in a bit of a hurry , and he accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun."

"As he neared a lake , he came across a very large male beaver sitting at the water's edge. He realized he'd left his gun at home and so he couldn't shoot the magnificent creature. Out of habit he raised his cane , aimed it at the animal as if it were his favorite hunting rifle and went 'bang, bang'."

"Miraculously , two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead. "

"Now, what do you think of that ?" asked the doctor.

The 86-year-old said, "Logic would strongly suggest that somebody else pumped a couple of rounds into that beaver."

The doctor replied , "My point exactly."
