it's not a high-end guitar...

Yamaha FG-312-II 12-string...I've played 12-strings that aren't this tough to play...can't seem to get the tension down (I'm using the lightest set of strings I can find, too)...top set of 5 frets probably need to be replaced (they were ground down to smooth them out about 15 years ago and they are grooved again...but also very low)...

oh, and of course tuning a fixed-bridge 12-string is always an adventure...

(Without seeing the instrument there is no way to be certain about these things)

Have you tried tuning down a half or even whole step, then using a STRONG capo to bring back up to normal left hand positioning? If it has a truss rod, then you may have developed a bit of back bow as well...as for frets, they can only be redressed so many times before replacement is needed...at that point you have to decide whether its cheaper to just get another guitar or spend a lot of money in fixing up the Yammie

now I've heard good and bad things about the de-tuning trick...yes, that would drop the tension, but it would accentuate tuning problems...I've never experimented with it...

It does have a truss rod, and a while back (at least a couple of years) I gave it a bit of an adjustment (trying to remember...I think I did a "push", which would decrease the action)...it wasn't a huge adjustment...

how much does it run to get some frets replaced (generally speaking)?

Tex, a fret job is something that varies from luthier to luthier...what town are you closest to/in? I might be able to at least find you a reputable referal from the guy who does all my work (he's built a couple of guitars for Billy Gibbons, and I trust him to fix it right everytime...)

haven't you paid attention, Wire? :)) San Antonio...

Wireline
January 31st, 2008, 1:37 pm
hell no...if I paid attention, would I be here?

Wow...even though I was born there and still have family there, I don't know anyone I would trust....you might be smarter to get hold of Charlie's Guitar Shop (if still open) in Dallas, or Erlewine's in Austin. If time and money are no object, then contact Mike Stevens in Alpine (he founded the Fender Custom Shop years ago, decided to be an independant rancher instead) or Joe Shepard here in Midland...

Might be time to donate the 12 string to a church, and get another one though...there is a very thick brick wall between repair cost and actual value....

What part of SA? I've got relatives there, as well as dear and lifelong friends....graduated from Cole HS on Ft Sam Houston in 1974

I always wondered about the "death warmed over" types who live on that stuff...

Actually the stuff we were shopping for is for my spouse. She has Celiac Sprue and a mild case of Crone's, which made her violently ill when she consumes wheat or dairy products...

As for the 50 year Barbie doll that looked like she had just stepped out of the microwave, I cannot say...

A song for the Texans here from a fellow Texan,Don Hemley.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejvdaHGNce8

Talking To The Moon

In the hot september sun down in Texas
Sucked the streams bone dry
Turned to roads to dust
In the sleepy little towns down in texas,
The shades are all pulled down;
The streets are all rolled up.
And the only thing that breaks the silence
Are the trucks a-passin by
Late at night on the front porch swing
You can hear their mournful sigh
And the lonesome weeping willow cries to the stars above
He was callin out for his lady love
Shes been gone so long

I was just talkin to the moon
Hopin someday soon that Id be over
The memory of you-too hard to hold

And the wind across the plains
Is all that now remains
And the night shakes loose the names
But they never quite go back the way they came

So, good-bye rodeo
Its a long, funny way for men to go
Never change
Never change at all

I was just talkin to the moon
Hopin someday soon that Id be over
The memory of you- too hard to hold on

I was just talkin to the moon
Hopin someday soon that Id be over the
Memory of you

actually its probably H2S gas that sometimes leaks from well...smells exactly like an egg fart...but much more deadly.

If you smell it, you are still OK...once you stop smelling it, only two things could have occurred: 1) the H2S has dissipated to a non-detectable level, or 2) you have received so much of it the body became saturated, and you will die soon...

Your posts are witty? You call them repartee? There's the first part of the confusion.

OTOH my posts are to this forums what "Faded Love" is to Texas Music, the "Mona Lisa" to the art world , and so on...

The only thing you fixed was any remaining misconceptions of your being a man of honor...to purposely misquote the Mona Lisa is OK...but when you start messing with Faded Love and/or anything by Bob Wills....

Well...the nanny filters are kicking in just thinking about the insult to the State of Texas...

Accusing me of insulting Bob Wills is just...just...:evil::snooty:
