Or rather, lack there of. One radio station around here started with Christmas music on 11/1-which I think is ridiculous. By the time the holiday comes people will be sick of it. It got me thinking though about how there are a buttload of Christmas songs but I can't think of any for Thanksgiving. I can understand not hearing them now because of the recent push that the judeo-Christian God is offensive and Columbus was a genocidal psychopath murdering thieving racist (ala the father of capitalist right wing conservatives or "republicans"). With that in mind why even keep the holiday...? Oh yeah, we can 'change' it to something better.
Anyway, my point was to ask if anyone knows of any legitimate Thanksgiving holiday songs (I really can't think of any) and if there aren't any, a proposal for some new ones to be made here.
I thought of a theme fo thanks that should make a lot of people happy.
"Barak Hussein Obama, mmmm-mmm-mmmm"
Just that one line would be sufficient, but I'm positive that expounding on his many 'accomplishments', kept promises and stellar, experienced leadership could generate lyrics and songs o' plenty.

I didn't know "Alice's" was a Thanksgiving song. I learned something new. that's weird because it's only played here around Christmas and New Year's for some reason.:eh:
why aren't you giving thanks to Obama...?

Alice's Restaurant Massacre was an anti-draft song.
The only relationship to Thanksgiving is that the litterbug incident that supposedly disqualified Arlo for military service occurred when they dumped the trash on Thanksgiving day (when the dump was closed).

It works for me, anyway.

"Over the River and Through the Woods" was traditionally a Thanksgiving song.

The only one I know of (besides "Over the River") is Adam Sandler's song "The Thanksgiving song"

There's one called "Happy Thanksgiving" by Debbie Friedman. I don't expect many people here to have heard of it, though.
Here it is on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DC2kEsDqA6g

For some reason, it drives me nuts when people get that backwards! :D

I know, right? But it's a Thanksgiving song. There is a lot of winter imagery, so that is why it is sometimes thought of as a Christmas song, but pumpkins are long gone (or were, before the late 1800s) by mid-December. The fact that "pumpkin pie" is one of the things looked forward to is a tip-off.
Plus... When I was in elementary school, our music teacher was big on holiday songs. Once upon a time, I knew every Christmas carol by heart as well as other Christmas and winter songs, and a handful of Chanukah songs (the music teacher liked me and knew I am Jewish). We learned lots of songs about Easter (seriously more rabbit than resurrection related, though). When I was in fourth grade, my grade (we were a musically talented bunch) learned all KINDS of songs about St. Patrick, and all kinds of general Irish folk-songs.
And when it came to Thanksgiving, we learned "Over the River."
Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZW73Qzju4A) is a lovely rendition. You see the snow, you see the deer, but when you hear it, there is no Christmas. You do get warm, family fuzzies, though.
Hooray for fuzzies!

sweet judas, no offense but I didn't get fuzzies from that number. My mom's side of the family would love it though. They're huge fans of the Alabama Christmas type stuff.
"Christmas in the Heartland" or "Christmas in Dixie" whatever it was is like torture for me. Not saying it's bad, just not my preferred musical style. But then I seem more drawn to the depressing ones which shows what kind of oddball I am.

Sorry... Country isn't for everyone. The way I remember it best is with the traditional instrumentation.
I'm having trouble finding an audio I like on this one. So far, the best two runner-ups involve a children's community theater style production. One is far too bouncy and campy.
I'm working on finding a better one for you.

In any event, the entirety of the lyrics is here:
Over the river and thru the woods,
To grandmother's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,
Thru the white and drifted snow, oh!
Over the river and thru the woods,
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and thru the woods,
To have a first-rate play;
Oh, hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ling!"
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day-ay!
Over the river and thru the wood,
Trot fast my dapple gray!
Spring over the ground,
Like a hunting hound!
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river and through the woods,
And straight through the barnyard gate.
We seem to go extremely slow
It is so hard to wait!
Over the river and through the wood --
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!
Over the river and thru the woods,
To grandmother's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,
Thru the white and drifted snow, oh!
Over the river and thru the woods,
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
