View Full Version : Hines Ward voted dirtiest player in the NFL by players

No surprise here, given his play IMO.
http://cincinnati.com/blogs/ludwig/2009/11/12/349/
In a Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players from New York state to the Golden Gate, Ward has been tagged, awarded and honored with that dubious distinction.
And deservedly so.

Ward took delight when he jacked up Cincinnati Bengals outside linebacker Keith Rivers a year ago, breaking Rivers’ jaw on a block that was late, unnecessary and uncalled for.
and perfectly legal. Odd, and perhaps a bit telling, that the example given as dirty actually wasn't.
though I have to admit I find it amusing that defenses get all butt hurt because a wide receiver is hitting them instead of the other way around.

When it was Rodney Harrison who had this dubious title, many folks in the forum reveled in making fun of him and belittling him. Let's see how some of those same folks treat this news.

its not about that, its about him hitting guys blindsided, its dirty, and the NFL has begun to change the rules to ovoid this kind of play. he is a dirty piece of **** and I hope he gets whats coming to him 10x

You need a tissue? maybe a hug?
What exactly is your definition of dirty? You admit that his blocks are within the rules, and then whine like a little girl that he plays dirty because he blocks. Sounds to me like you just want to whine about the guiy because you don't like him.
edited to add: The irony of you wishing harm on a player for playing within the rules while at the same time crying about people being cheap is not lost on me.
It is the NFL players who voted this title upon him.... not VCaddy. Are you saying they are all wrong and you're right?

Hines Ward does not play dirty. Rough? Yes, but not dirty.
You wanna stop him? You gotta give it right back to him on the playing field, as some good defensive players have done.

IMO he plays very dirty, You will see him hit players on the other side of the field who are no where near a play. Plus defence cant hit a defensless reciever like he hits them. The NFL has been addressing his style of hitting, and Im afraid its going to bring about more rules, just what the NFL does not need. Just because this punk ass ****ing creep has to run around smiling as he just laid out a defensless defender on the opposite side of the field from where the play is. He is going to hurt someone when the hit is unnecessry. If he does one of his hits, near the ball thats fair, but ive seen him do some really ****ed up ****.

If Ward's so dirty, why isn't he flagged more often?
Look, I'm hardly a Ward fan, but if he's getting away with dirty hits, the fault lies in the officiating for not calling him on it.
And again, GET A DEFENSIVE PLAYER WHO CAN STOP HIM COLD, AND YOU WON'T HAVE THIS ISSUE!

You are a Ravens fan aren't you? any words about teams taking "contracts" out on opposing players by chance?
And for those that are actively wishing injury on someone, such as VCaddy and 5thidsoldier are actively wishing harm on a player, you are the most unsportsmanlike POS football fans I can imagine. While I am certain that the Steelers have there share of horrible horrible people as fans who make such wishes against our opponents, I am certainly glad that none of them are here in this thread.
I never wished harm on him, yet you call me a piece of ****, classy. Point out where a "contract" or what ever you say has resulted on a dirty hit on a player and I will tell you how I feel about it. If a ravens player played like him you could be assured that he would be flagged.

Its not tough to ram into a man at full speed while hes jogging down the field 20yards away from the play. Thats dirty, and now because of his abuse of the rules is illegal. Im not saying that it wasnt legal when he was doing it, i am saying that he was abusive of a rule, and now its illegal. You can do things leagally and still be a classles, dirty player IMO.

In my dictionary, laid out cold doesn't mean someone got brought flowers and cookies and getting what he deserves x10 doesn't include hugs and kisses.
Im sorry what were you saying about not wishing that he got hurt?

And here we have it, the real reason why you don't like Ward. I actually smiled as I read this because I swear I can hear you sniffle a bit as you complain how unfair the NFL is while you wipe away that little tear in the corner of your eye. Don't worry, you can blow your nose on your blouse and wipe your hands on your skirt, no one will notice.

To clear the air though, dirty does not mean illegal. So I'm not eaxctly sure what the conversations about legality of the hits are. I would say dirty would mean taking something that is legal by the rules, but use it in a fairly illegal or excessive way. Like say, breaking someones jaw. Legal hit? Probably. Over excessive? Probably. There are certain trash talks that could be considered dirty, not like your Mom's stupid. There are a lot of 'legal' things that would be dirty in most peoples eyes.
I'm not saying good or bad on it, but he did win by a substantial margin. He 'won' by almost twice as much as second place.

Exactly, even over excessive, and just outright dirty can be different. I mean his hits are just dangerous when as unexpected as they are. You can have a vicious hit be alittle excessive but still be a good hit if its a play that could save your guy from being tackled, but he does this **** when not even in play.

nah, it can be sugar coated, but its still inexcusable. Thats why its now illegal, I think it took this long because most recievers dont do that. They have more class. Sorry but when your out of the field of play, you shouldnt need to pay attention for some ******* coming up from behind you and laying you out. Was it legal, yes, is it now no. That's what being a true fan is all about. Being able to make excuses for your teams players even if you don't agree with them.
Take T.O. for example. Everyone hates him and think he is pompus and a jerk when he's on someone elses team, and normally even towards the end of his career with your favorite team. But that doesn't stop people from make excuses for him when their team first picks him up.

Well to be fair to Rodney, the coaches did have to pull him aside and ask him not to level their receivers in practice as hard as he was.
Rodney was a smashmouth player regardless of the team he was on.

Or that you want him to get what he deserves, x10, but that you dont want him to get hurt? Exactly what is it that you think Hines Ward deserves to happen to him but that when multiplied 10 times would NOT be an injury?

Fined, released from the team, flagged, suspended, but I think more than anything have his image as a person tarnished.
All of those are things I can think someone who doesn't like him might want to see that won't result in injury.

Released???? For what? He is productive and Steelers fans absolutely adore Hines Ward. He plays the game like it's supposed to be played, hard and violent. You can only flag, fine, or suspend someone for doing things that are against the rules, which it appears everyone agrees, Hines does not.

I wasn't saying he should be, or people in Pitts want him to be. Just pointing out something that someone who hates Hines Ward would like see happen to him. I'd like to see him traded to the Vikes honestly.
I mean think of someone you hate, watching them get dropped by their team (think the T.O. from Dallas). How funny is that?

Something he cannot say now about his past hits, since the league has evolved the rules to cover that ****** bag's style of playing. I didnt want it to come to this, but he wanted to continue. I admire his intensity on the field, but he is still a ****** bag for the **** he pulls and has such a good time doing it.

Or they dont believe that hitting a man when the play is not near them is wrong, especially laying someone out. Once again you dodge my point, that legal hits are fine, I encourage it. I have the rules for QB's now, like Tom Brady, but when (and im getiing really tired of saying this) a player is on the other side of the field of where a ball is, having a guy run full steam into you is absolutely insane. That is why it is not legal. It can ruin a mans career, and for what? it accomplished nothing for either team and got a man hurt.

It's not legal now, it was legal then. It doesn't happen any more, but the vast majority of Hines' hits have come blocking in close proximity to the play. You are taught to isolate your man and make sure he in no way makes the play. Ward does that better than anyone.

he was fined for it so it certainly wasnt legal... otherwise he would not get fined. I can root for guys who play well against my team, even steelers players. Not Heinz because of the cheap hits he makes on other guys. Hes got talent, hes got intensity, but he plays with disreguard of other players. Not that thats all bad, and I didnt really pay much attention to the Rivers hit. I know he got hurt, but my disdain for ward goes back years. I was very saddened to see Troy go down in the first game, i dont hate all steelers, just a guy like ward for his type of playing I have observed over the years.

gah, this is like talking to a truther. It os pretty pointless to debate this, as no matter what is said you will deny it anyway.
Instead, i am gonna go back to laughing at VC's attempts to unsay what he said. Maybe I will point out that it is pretty horrible to wish injury on someone again too.

he was fined for it so it certainly wasnt legal... otherwise he would not get fined. I was very saddened to see Troy go down in the first game, i dont hate all steelers, just a guy like ward for his type of playing I have observed over the years.
also if i recall he led with his helmet which is illegal.
Actually he didn't get fined for it. They changed the rule after the season and the league even said after the hit that it was a legal hit.

I only take it like you say it. First, you whine about a football player making legal hits and then say you want to see someone put him unconscious.
Sure you want to discourage that. Hines ward makes big legal hits. you are whining about them and applauding when those legal hits get made illegal. Though io dont see you complaining about Other hits, like lewis's hit on johnson last year.
So should he call the commissioner before he blocks someone to see if it is actually necessary?
tell me, if he plays so dirty why dont the refs call him on it?
You wanted him knocked out, unconscious, and hoped that someone would do it to him this Sunday. That is exactly what you wanted, evidenced by your OWN posts. You are more than welcome to admit that it was a horrible thing to wish on someone and that you were wrong to do so. or you could just keep on making excuses for yourself. Whichever.
and listening might not be your strong point, several members have said that this type of hitting is illegal now. And he has been fined this year (afew times if i recall correctly for doing so) I have repeatedly said that i dont want him hurt but would like to see him get nailed. I want guys to be allowed to hit, but when talking about people out side of the field of play, that should be off limits. Im sorry we dont agree there but I cant agree. I like the big hits, and I am against the tougher roughing the passer rules, but there is a reason why you cant hit a qb or kicker after the ball has left. They are not in the play and any hit on them is excessive and they are vulnerable.

Maybe, but I'm talking about the hit that broke Keith River's jaw. That is where the Hines Ward rule came from, and he certainly wasn't fined or penalized for it.

I thought he was, but he has been fined in the past for late hits and is notorious for blind side hits, which is why were having this conversation now.

He has been fined many times, but who hasn't. Hell wasn't Ray Lewis just fined 25 K? Most of it coming on a dirty hit on Chad Johnson?

Chad Johnson.. the name rings a bell.. but who could it be.. hmm...
I'm a bit more surprised that Albert Haynesworth is high on this list. He is so tired after each play where does he find the energy to play dirty? Unless they mean like un-showered, in which case it would be more believable.

yes thats true all good players have been fined, because sometimes its a matter of seconds between a great hit and what could be deemed as a dirty hit. Had that ball been 2 feet lower that hit ray delivered would have been hailed as a great hit. Chad couldnt get it, got leveled, ray gets fined. end of story IMO. However Ward makes quite the habit of it, and when the officials make a rule and unoficially its called the Heins ward rule, and the players vote him the dirtiest player in the game. There is something to that that I believe to be valid.

See? When MY guy has a dirty hit, it was just an accident that was ALMOST a great hit, but when YOUR guy does its dirty and I hope he gets hurt!

Less than 2% of the players voted that way. A real overwhelming mandate there. hell, I am pretty sure Ron Paul got more votes than that.

Of polled players I believe it was 11%, unless you are assuming of unpolled players not a single one would have voted for him, I'm not sure where the 2% comes from.
To use your Ron Paul reference, if adding in all American's who didn't vote and assume they wouldn't have voted for him, I'm guessing he didn't get 2%.
But your first point is correct, but like I said before, that's common practice.

Why has no one brought up that Rodney Harrison still got 3 votes? That's the story here. Rodney Harrison still effective in retirement. Receivers still upset and afraid to go over the middle in games he is recapping at halftime.

When it was Rodney Harrison who had this dubious title, many folks in the forum reveled in making fun of him and belittling him. Let's see how some of those same folks treat this news.
This isn't news. This is at least the second time he's been voted this, if not the third.
And I don't recall Rodney being a dirty player. I hated him, yes, because he had a lot of success against my Steelers, Of course I hated him. But I don't remember anything dirty.
And it's an opinion poll amongst football players. Show me some stats on who gets the most fines for cheapshots, then we can talk. Who was that guy that stepped on somebody's face some time ago? Or this idiot from Chicago that punched that guy in the face?
Show me video of Hines Ward doing anything like that, and we'll talk. The man is pure class, the ultimate teammate, and a great football player. Just like Rodney Harrison is.

Funny choice. I guess a lot of players got tired of getting lit up by him.
Harrison was dirty. They made rules because of the guy's play. He would have fit in with the seventies Raiders.
I'd vote Albert Haynesworth.

Well VC was claiming the entire NFL voted ward as the most dirty player, when in fact it was only 11% of 296 polled players. Considering 32 teams with 55 man rosters that is 1,760 players of which about 35 voted for ward. Thats just under 2%. Though now that I think about it, rosters are actually 53 I think, not 55, so it is actually going to be just over 2% rather than slightly under.
in other words, I was just pointing out to him how disingenuous it is of him to claim the entire NFL voted unanimously for ward when the actual truth is not even close to that.

If I had a vote, and voting for non NFL players (ie Harrison) is an option. I think the dirtiest player in the NFL is Jeff Van Gundy, do you remember when he purposely tried to end Tim Duncan's career? Duncan was lucky to escape alive.

Better yet lets read the actual article, because that is pretty much EXACTLY what it said. and it certainly didn't say anything about unanimous, which the poster that I was refuting claimed.
Hines Ward is the dirtiest player in the NFL, according to a Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players released this week.
The Steelers' wide receiver, long considered the league's best blocking wide receiver, received 11.6 percent of the vote.
that is 11.6% of 296 players, or the equivalent of about 34 or 35 players.
32 teams in the NFL, each team with 53 players. 32 x 53 = 1696 total players in the NFL.
34 or 35 is just slightly over a total of 2% of 1696, which is the total amount of players in the NFL.
Do you guys even bother actually reading these articles or do you just get so excited when you think something bad is being said about the Steelers that you have to share it without even getting past the first paragraph of what you are reading?
