This was basically what I was talking about a couple of weeks ago when I was complaining about Curb Your Enthusiasm and it's hypocrisy when it comes to Religion and how Islam is always off limits.

The One Place on Earth Not Destroyed in '2012'

by Jonathan Crow November 3, 2009

When I interviewed director Roland Emmerich a few months ago about his upcoming disaster flick "2012," the first question I asked was, "Why do you like killing the world?" His response: "It makes for a good story."

Over the past fifteen years, Emmerich has crafted some great tales about global doom, featuring some spectacular scenes of destruction. He had aliens zap the White House in "Independence Day," he let a massive lizard flatten New York City in "Godzilla," and he sent killer tornadoes through downtown Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow."

For "2012," Emmerich set his sites on destroying the some biggest landmarks around the world, from Rome to Rio. But there's one place that Emmerich wanted to demolish but didn't: the Kaaba, the cube-shaped structure located in the center of Mecca. It's the focus of prayers and the site of the Hajj, the biggest, most important pilgrimage in Islam.

"Well, I wanted to do that, I have to admit," the filmmaker told scifiwire.com. "But my co-writer Harald [Kloser] said, 'I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie.' And he was right."

Emmerich went on: "We have to all, in the western world, think about this. You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have ... a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is. So it's just something which I kind of didn't [think] was [an] important element, anyway, in the film, so I kind of left it out."

Traditionally, a fatwa has meant religious opinion by an Islamic scholar or imam. The term has gained currency in the West after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a death sentence in the form of a fatwa against British author Salman Rushdie for alleged blasphemies in his book "The Satanic Verses" in 1989. As a result, the Indian-born writer was forced into hiding for most of the '90s.

Emmerich has no qualms about wrecking other major landmarks, however. The massive dome of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican rolls on top of a crowd of churchgoers. The huge Christ the Redeemer statue that looms over Rio de Janeiro disintegrates. And, of course, the White House gets crushed when a wave drops the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy on top of it.

The director was also reportedly approached by people hoping to get their famous landmarks trashed, like Taiwan's Taipei 101, which is the tallest completed building in the world. There's no word yet if that structure will meet the same on-screen fate as the Vatican and the White House. "2012" opens nationwide on November 13.

On a side note…

The obelisk in Mecca contains a rock. (Kaaba Stone) A rock that fell to earth and the ancients thought it was a sign from god and so they worshiped it and the spot in which it fell.

Its’ an asteroid.

Technically it’s a meteorite. Look up the Kaaba Stone.

Here's an excellent answer someone gave on yahoo:

The Black Stone, or the Kaaba Stone, is set on the outside of the eastern corner of the Kaaba and is about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the ground. The stone is a dark reddish brown color and its diameter is about 12 inches (30.5 centimeters). The Black Stone is now in pieces, three large parts and smaller fragments, which are now encased in a massive silver band. It is presumed to be of pre-Islamic origin, possibly meteoric and has always been the dark color it is because it was burned as it fell through the atmosphere. Some Muslims believe that this stone fell from the sky during the time of Adam and has the power to cleanse worshippers of their sins by absorbing them into itself. For these, the Black Stone is believed to have originally been colored white, but it turned black because of the sins it has absorbed over the years. Others believe the stone was given to Ismael by the angel Gabriel in order to provide the cornerstone for the Kaaba. The Black Stone is kissed by all who can gain access to it but is not considered idol worship. The single most important reason for kissing the stone is that Prophet Muhammad did so. No devotional significance whatsoever is attached to the stone.

I’m sure there are other explanations of it and its myth.

I really don't get the whole thing with movies, music, and literature having to be equal opportunity offenders (and i guess by extention every movie that somehow praises Christianity has to also praise Islam?)

There are plenty of things out there to be disgusted with when it comes to media double standard in treating Islam with kid gloves. The most agregious recent example would be the cowardly "pixeling" by all News networks of the Danish Mohhamad cartoon, or the murders in Holland.

This is something which i do not see as such, there may be plenty of reasons for not showing "Mecca" destroyed. To begin with i doubt the movie will be shown in Saudi Arabia, so there probably wont be many that even relate , the writer and director may have not thought the choice was iconic enough.
And there should be no "approved list" of shrines that are to be destroyed if one is to destroy religious icons.
Does the Western Wall get demolished?
Are any Buddhists statues demolished ?
What about Hindu shrines?
Is the Mormon temple crushed into pieces?

Seriously this does not outrage me in the least, i sorta like the fact that the guy admits the uncivilized reaction by many in Islam at the slightest notion of blasphemy

Hello Ballygirl,

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of books last year. In that collection he gave me is a book Authored by Clive Cussler and Craig Dirgo entitled 'Sacred Stone'.

This book deals with a diabolical plot to destroy the Sacred Stone discovered by Abraham which is the foundation of the Muslim Faith. The Stone lies in the Kaaba which is surrounded by the al Haram mosque, the largest on Earth. The mosque is located in Mecca where the yearly Haaj is attended by millions on pilgrimage to this Sacred place in Saudi Arabia.

I've heard of no Fatwa against the Authors. Perhaps those 'scared silly' Producers of these type of movies have only fear of fear itself to be concerned with.

The Book itself has some intricately designed dynamic plots and was very interesting to me in its history of the Stone of Abraham and that which followed right up to the near present time.

*** Just a note: I have absolutely no connection to this Book; except for reading and enjoying what I read.

Be well Lady,

Jim

PS: The reviews on Amazon pretty much trash this book. I enjoyed it from the historical aspect which was a bit sketchy also. There's enough there to start one off on some research if one so chooses or even wants to.

PSS: The following link contains some of the history of the 'Stone' and photos of the Kabba and the Mosque:
