View Full Version : Exposed breasts on the nightly news

This was shown on broadcast TV, so I guess it's okay here. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It seems harmless, but I might be a little uncomfortable seeing this report with my daughters in the room.
What do you think?

If your daughters are teenagers, they should be able to handle it, and start doing the monthly self exams themselves. Health information isn't always comfortable for some people to see on the news, but things like this can save lives.

Remeber the costum malfuntion that raised so much of an issue? It'll be interesting to see the reaction to this.
I'm not sure that the nightly news is the place to be giving medical advice and instruction to the public. My doctors and a few nurses have given me this sort of instruction many times. I find it hard to believe that most women have not had the instruction before.
As for if the demo bothers me.... not really. The woman is so flat chested that I don't think there is much that would be bothersome for a young child watching it.

Right you are. I am infinitely more offended by the hundreds of erection commercials that my family is subjected to during "family hour." Enough is enough!

They didn't offend me, I am not squeamish, they were obviously chosen for their demure stature, but that doesn't mean the segment should have exposed them based on the opinion of some that it was OK.

Ah yes, teaching about condoms will increase sexual activity much like requiring seat belts encourages reckless driving. At least arm the population with knowledge instead just hoping and praying teenagers remain abstinent.

That's right. We've got to teach kids about all kinds of sex.
After all, if it's educational, it's A-OK.
Now, tell me what types of sexual practices they should NOT learn about.

I did not assume, I questioned that as a possibility for his acquiescence, and being an American serviceman does not in my estimation remove one from any suspicions or speculations, not by any means.
Case in point, Toad Kennedy was an American serviceman, at one time.

I am not advocating the teaching of sexual acts in these classes. They should teach abstinence as well comprehensive birth control devices for those students that will be sexually active. You act is if I am advocating "Fellatio 101" or "Sodomy For Dummies" in these classes.

I've seen men with bigger boobs. Now with all the attention on Breast Cancer, is it really going to make a difference? I don't think so. Cancer is cancer and we should focus on all cancers.
I do think they would never show a doctor with his finger up the rear of some man looking for his prostate. Sad but true.

What wasn't mentioned is that it's recommended that men do this as well as women and on the same schedule. I said this in a thread I started a bit back and other times on this board.
Men learn what you just saw and do this for yourself as well. Breast cancer is on the rise in men. Don't be embarrassed by this procedure.

That anyone would compare this to Janet Jackson's stunt is a little silly to me. I also don't agree with the assertion that "all doctors teach this and therefore every woman already knows how to do this."
I think the number of diagnoses would be significantly reduced it this were the case. If it saves a life it's worth it. And to the people who are "just glad they don't have to hear about it anymore now that the month of October is over..." some thoughts are better left unspoken. Speaking as someone whose life was touched by this issue, I spend every minute remembering someone...and I'm glad that October is a month where others do the same.

Which is why I posted what I did in my last post. Even though a woman may be taught by her ob-gyn or even her gp how to do this, it's very rare for a gp to show this to a man - no one ever thinks of it. I have lost guy friends (yes, plural) to breast cancer. One of them admitted towards the end he knew he should have done this and knew how but was too embarrassed to think of how others would react if they found out.
Guys - embarrassment lasts a couple minutes - death is quite a bit longer.

What we have forgotten is that the Janet Jackson show was entirely sexual. Even before the "malfunction." Kids and church groups were watching the game and should not have been subject to a halftime show full of sexual tension. Very sad. If Janet did not want to flash us, she would not have decorated her tata for us.

When you can see JFKs head explode or Holocaust victims on the History Channel, I don't see why a topless woman in a breast cancer education video on the news should freak anyone out. But this is of course America, and anything close to sexual (including non sexual nudity) is of course worse than horrible real violence.

I don't understand why anything with even an indirect POSSIBILITY of sexual connotations is considered indecent to some...
... but if you find that dancing and slight innuendo are offensive to you, you have the following rights as an American citizen:
1. Turn off the Tv.
2. Teach your children anything that you want them to learn.

There is nothing sexual about a woman searching for a lump on her breast in hope of locating any breast cancer potential early.
And if it helps save one life, it's worth the childish reaction of some to this.
There was nothing gratuitous about it, it was as sterile and as medical as it gets, and if some are offended by the sight of a nipple, too bad.
It would be another thing if this was narrated by some 70's deep voice guy with Barry White playing in the background, and the exam done inside some candle lit room with a bottle of champagne chilling by a fireplace.
This was cold, hard life-saving advice.

This has no business being on evening news.
I'm sorry, I've got no problem with breasts and never did. I find seeing a woman's breasts no more startling than seeing a male's breasts.
However that's not how most of America views it. The broadcast of this on the evening news is not something Americans deal with well.
Beyond that, showing the actual bared breast didn't teach anything at all that couldnt have been taught in another manner.
This was purely sensationalism and done for ratings. I'm betting that it had lots of lead-up to this program to draw viewers into the broadcast as well. They even went to Elizabeth Edwards, "so what did you think of our showing breasts.. a breast exam on tv?" How hokey can you get. As if Mrs Edwards would somehow serve as suitable validation to a entirely unnecessary news segment.

I find it funny that we all let words dictate our reactions to this piece. Case in point:
The OP's title vs. the actual warnings of the newscast.
Both suggest SCANDAL, but really the intent of the piece couldn't be further from sexual pornography. See, just like in art, intent matters. The difference between an artistic nude and a pornographic image are the intent of the piece.
The nude celebrates the human form; the pornographic image suggests sexual activity/behavior.
In this situation:
The information piece showed a woman's breast to demonstrate proper technique; a pornographic image would show a woman's breast with the intent of causing sexual arousal.
If you were to enact a blanket ban of any nudity in society simply because you could not see this distinction, well... beware of what you wish for!

I'm pretty sure your daughters have seen breasts before, considering most women have them.
Since when did we as a society decide that breasts were 'adult content'? Should we blindfold babies when they are breast fed to keep them from being exposed to such vulgar displays?
I see nothing inappropriate at all in this video, and commend the station for airing such informative and potentially lifesaving material, as well as this young woman for the courage to risk the indignation of the overly squeamish.
