This is a nostalgia thread. Many things that were common in past years, have all but vanished now. What are some of the things that you miss?
Here's a couple from me to start with:
Movies at the Drive-In
Being able to accompany my loved ones all the way to their plane at the airport

I miss cars without seatbelts and anti-lock brakes. Even just a lap-belt felt so much les confining.
I miss not being able to make a phone call to a loved one when one of us was away from our desk.
I miss people dying sooner of heart disease because transplant technology hadn't been perfected ot the point it has now reached.
I miss gay people being in the closet so they'd be a mysterious "other" who people could mistreat if they ever encountered them.

I might be mistaken but my understanding of the op was that there were some good things in the past. Sorry you had a miserable life experience.
Knowing your neighbors, I lived on this block that everybody knew each other. All the kids hung out together and there was never any problems.
It seems like it's not like that anymore.

I didn't have a miserable life experience; quite to the contrary, I'm constanty overjoyed by how much better many aspects of life have become.

Great ! But no thoughts of nostalgia at all ? Yes I know things/times were not greatest in my life growing but but there are things that I wished didn't change.

Change can be good, change can be bad. The whole concept "don't fix it if it ain't broke" applies.
If something is working perfectly fine, why change it?
Somethings are in drastic need of change today, some of that would be undoing some of the bad changes we have made, some of it would be moving entirely in a new direction.
Tradition also has its good and bad. Tradition is the past's gift to the present. To foolishly toss it in the garbage like people nowadays seem so delighted to do is throwing the past away, throwing away a part of what made us what we are. Instead, you take some of the present and add to it so you can then give that to the future. Throwing away the past is also keeping it from the future, depriving them of even being able to experience it.
Technological and medical advancements are some example of good change. The complete elimination of tradition is an example of bad change.
Something I am nostalgic about? As a kid being able to safely wander around town without worry of any harm even at 8 years old, being able to keep the door unlocked all day without worry of someone coming into the house and stealing, girls acting like girls and boys acting like boys instead of trying to have one neutral gender, etc. Its amazing how much things have changed, mainly for the worse but a little for the better, in just the last 10 or 15 years. But then, I realize I was born in the wrong time, I have no real place in a world that has no respect for the past, I have no place in a world that focuses on hedonism, I have no place in a world that doesn't value honor, chivalry, loyalty, or wisdom and instead places all value on greed, corruption, and power. Not to say the past didn't have these problems, but it has gotten worse, and at least the masses didn't favor them like they do now.
I'd like the culture/tradition of the past and the technology of the future, if I really could have my ideal. I think to truly grow as a person and a society you need to look to both the past and the future, don't be one directional.

Movies at the Drive-In
Got two of em in my town. They are only open May - Sep due to weather but it only costs $7.00 a person aged 11 and over (under that is free) and you get two movies. Off the top of my head I saw Terminator, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Transformers, and probably a few others this summer.

I see some drive ins scattered about, but there's none left out here in the central valley where I live. In Reedley, Calif..... there is the remnants of what was once probably a nice drive in, but now it just sits in silent decay.

I wish I could give my daughter the freedom I had as a kid. Leaving the house on Saturday morning after cartoons were done and not coming home until dinner without having to check in every hour on the hour kind of thing. If she took off on her bike like I used to and I didn't hear from her for an hour I would be calling out a search and rescue.

IMO, it is because they are such unhappy people that they just can't stand it if others aren't as miserable as they are.

I miss when people 'gave their word' it meant something one could depend upon; as solemn as a vow. Today: nothing but lip-service twisted in every which-way to serve one's own selfish agenda.
I miss the 20 mile there and back again walks to the Mountains with my friends when all ya had to worry about is not getting hit by a car on the way.
I miss the Bare-Ass-Beach swimming hole and the Tarzan swing rope which took us over and dumped us into the river.
Unfortunately; youth cannot be relived. Some real great memories will have to suffice.
Be well,
Jim
PS: Using the tails from lightning bugs smeared on your hands or face to light ya up in the dark. One would probably be arrested for cruelty to bugs during these wonderful times.

Anything that came in packaging that you could open with your hands.Back in the 70's Carol Burnett did a skit where she came home with bags of groceries and proceeded to take things out and try to open them. She couldn't get anything open. Packages of cookies, cheese, chips, you name it - everything was impossible to open. At the time I thought it was funny. Now it's like reliving it.
We had a "spread" at work today. I cut my finger on a plastic container of cole slaw while trying to open it. Ridiculous packaging. Like Ft. Knox.

I'm actually all for just the Lap belt since I can't use the chest strap. Short (just an inch over the shortness of stature cut off) + big boobs= CHOKING and Cuts on my neck. And yes I am AWARE a cop COULD write me a ticket over just wearing the Lap belt, but usually after the explaination and illustration of WHY I don't wear it, that's enough for them.

My husband and i were talking last night when an older song came on the radio. He said that song reminded him of the easier carefree days. I think our life is pretty easy now compared to many, so i told him, be careful, 30 yrs from now you could be calling THESE yrs the easy carefree yrs.

A brand new triple-screen drive-in opened up in Lubbock last year. The sign of a come-back?
My folks used to pile the whole family in the big honkin' Ford station wagon - another thing of the past - and take us to the drive-in on the weekends. The first movie I ever remember seeing in my life was "Sink the Bismarck!" starring Kenneth More and the beautiful Dana Winter. I was only 5 years old, but even then I knew she was gorgeous. I was also impressed with the battles between the great battleships, made all the more impressive by the HUGE drive-in movie screen - the "I Max " of their day!

You have to lay down the law and say, "I don't take calls all the time. I have times when I don't and won't."
Or if you're a wuss, just use the excuse that you were out of your recieving let it go to voice mail.

The milkman - glass bottles of fresh milk with a layer of cream on the top.
The Bungalow Bar truck in summer with his sleigh bell contraption ringing. I marveled at how quickly he reached in and got you wahetever you ordered (usually popsicles for us), with the dry ice smoke billowing out.
Running through the sprinkler and drinking from a garden hose. Simple pleasures.
