Because I opened an e-mail from a friend & fellow officer for years. Of course he didn't know but it contained a virus which crashed my computer. My computer was just over a year old & today I ordered another one. It's called "cool videos".

Why would you have to get a new computer?

Why would you have to get a new computer?

My reason for posting this information was to try & warn others about it. My sister in law received the same virus yesterday from a Facebook poster. As far as why? I'm having the first one repaired for my wife to use as an offline computer. She doesn't use the net but for checking on our checking account. I really thought I may help someone.

Is your virus protection integrated into your email? Many of the security suites out there today scan email as its received and will quarantine those emails before you open them.

I've been using Kapersky and its worked well for me.

PS Sorry to hear about your computer troubles.

Thanks I'll check that out. I have Mcafee protection. When I went to open the e-mail it started running for a little bit, then said it couldn't run it, because it was corrupt. I really don't understand why it wasn't in protection.

MG,

Sorry to hear about your computer issues. I also have McAfee (Hey it's free with my high speed internet), I just checked and yes it does have E-mail scanning so you might want to check to see if it is on.

I know we disagree often about politics but I hate to see anyone slammed with a virus, best of luck to you.

Might want to use an alternative browser like Firefox or Chrome as well.

I use Chrome and opened up the virus that was being sent through a FB video and it did nothing to me because of it.

Yeah. My computer was already asking me to change to a different browser for weeks. I didn't know enough about computers to change browsers tho. On this computer (my daughter's) I keep getting asked something about cookies too. It barely works also.

Chrome (my favorite): http://www.google.com/chrome

Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html

They are both easy to install and learn how to use. The keyboard shortcuts and other habits that will speed your browsing take a bit longer to learn and become habit.

Thanks brother. Since I'm close on my SS check every month, I have to charge what I need extra. Since you said that, I had Mcafee for a year & that year may be up.

Don't buy another antivirus again!

Uninstall what you have when it expires and get the free Microsoft antivirus and antispyware:

I didn't know about these. BTW, my daughter just bought a new laptop & it fryed last week. Her other computer two years ago had Mcafee on it. It got a virus & crashed her hardrive. All they did was refund her protection money.

It is a bit odd as most sites won't tell you such a thing unless you are using a browser that their code does not support. Internet Explorer is supported by 99% of the sites out there.

Unless you are using an old version of IE...

Go to HELP (in the upper right corner) > About Internet Explorer...

What version are you using?

It should give you the version of Internet Explorer you are using in a number between 5 and 8 I'd say.

In the Internet Explorer window that you are browsing this site with...

Go to Help > About Internet Explorer

I'm sorry, it's 7.

No problem!

While not very old, 8 is the current version.

I suppose they could be sunsetting support for 7 and thus the warnings. If you were getting that message and on 8, that would be a real reason for concern!

Before you renew a subscription for McAfee, check with your internet service provider and see if they offer free antivirus software as part of your subscription. They may, may not - but if they do it will save you a few bucks.

Edit: Or as Hoobeedoo said go with the free stuff from Microsoft.
