View Full Version : Boycott Home Depot
eddie_the_k
October 29th, 2009, 10:29 am
In today's news, Home Depot fired an employee for wearing a button that said "One Nation Under God":
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_god_button_home_depot (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_god_button_home_depot)
They say it has nothing to do with God, just company policy about wearing buttons. Um Hmm
Until Home Depot rectifies this situation, consider boycotting them! And let them know that you won't be spending any of your "In God We Trust" money at their stores!

I just checked the board before heading out to Home Depot for some supplies. Amazing timing.
I agree with johnrocks - their house, their rules. I get so sick of these whiny people that think they can get away with it just because they want to, regardless what the rules say. Perhaps the period of unemployment will cause the former employee to reflect on why you follow the rules set out by the employer.

big thread on this in Religion Forums
to me it can be summed up like this
1. company policy allows one single approved button
2. the guy was warned multiple times
3. the guy was fired as per company rules
4. the guy can find a job somewhere where he is allowed to wear this button
5. Cool Ranch Doritos are better then any other flavor

I guess an atheist should have the right to wear a pin that states " I read the Bible, that's why I'm an Atheist" or I should be able to wear a Confederate Flag button that says " You wear your "X" so don't bitch about mine" too then huh?

It's your right to boycott just like it is their right to fire the employee. If he had been warned, use some common sense. I believe in standing on your principles, but in this day and age, you'd better try to keep the job putting food on your table because finding another one will be a bitch.

I am confused as to Home Depots argument due to this from the above link
This associate chose to wear a button that expressed his religious beliefs. The issue is not whether or not we agree with the message on the button," Craig Fishel said. "That's not our place to say, which is exactly why we have a blanket policy, which is long-standing and well-communicated to our associates, that only company-provided pins and badges can be worn on our aprons."
Fishel said Keezer was offered a company-approved pin that said, "United We Stand," but he declined
The pin said "One Nation under God, Indivisable" with an American Flag. Store official is saying they fired him due to wearing a pin showing his religious beliefs. Looks to me he was showing his support for the country and his brother in the military. The store offered him a pin saying "United we Stand" I dont see the difference. But there is of course the store policy that states only store approved pins can be worn. While I do not agree with it I do understand the position of Home Depot, If it was clearly pointed out in the employee regs then thats the rule of that workplace. I prefer Lowes anyway. In my area the two stores are 1/4 mile apart and the HD associates are usually clueless and offer no assistance.

Yep and even one customer who gets offended by it just isn't worth the controversy, I believe in keeping politics and religion out of a business environment as much as possible, let the owners/stockholders make policy there.

Not me.
The "local" mom & pop or family owned shops around here suck big time and do what they can to rip the locals off.
The greatest thing that has happened around here since I have been back was the opening this year of our Semi Super Wal Mart.
I pay $1.69 for a bottle of ranch dressing at the new Wally World, the cheapest same size bottle at the "family owned" grocery store has been costing me $3.29.
$7.87 for a bottle of fabric softener at the "family owned" grocery store, $3.49 for a similar sized bottle at Wally World.
Screw em.
They gouged me for years, and still do on goods Wal Mart doesn't carry, I have no feelings of loyalty, none.

Where I work, six flags, we are allowed one button provided by the company. I am not allowed to wear any other button as they will not let me in the park with an unapproved button on.
So I understand the policy Home Depot has. As long as it is a blanket policy there should be no issue. If you allow one then you must allow all.

I looked at outdoor lights at Lowe's and Home Depot; want some motion lights as well as some with timers and Home Depot ate Lowe's lunch for the exact same light and I'm talking real money like $20-$30 cheaper per light, I'll go with the less prices and send a few extra bucks to "Feed the Children" next week to pay off my conscience.

Sounds like perhaps he was upping the God ante.
Still he had a choice, remove the button or remove himself.
If he puts wearing a button over having a paycheck that is fine by me as long as he doesn't try to force his private employer to bend to his desires.
This sums up my opinion of it.
Seems that "one nation under God" didn't raise the hackles he wanted, so he escalated.
His problem was that "one nation uder God" wasn't controversial enough to start with. It's recited daily in this society in (most? many? at least some?) schools across the country. It's part of the culture, at least for now. And I'll bet that the mere act of bringing the bible to the break room wasn't the tipping point either. I'll bet there is more behind the story. "(Big sigh...) Sooooo ... I think I'll read my bible now, here in the break room, on company property ... Hey, dude. Check out this scripture passage ...." (Just speculating, of course.)
In this economy, one's job is not a smart bargaining chip to use for making a statement. Sometimes actions like this make you an overnight hero, but that rarely happens if it looks like you went searching on a death wish or martyrdom mission.
And a guy with some high-in-demand skill might have more leverage than he did. Most Home Depot jobs can be filled overnight, and there is a line of people waiting for someone to step down and make an opening the company can fill with them.

Home Depot has some good deals so I'll pass on the boycott but their "house", their rules. As freedoms are eroding from under you, where will you finally take a stand? Sure, it's Home Depot's house but there is no reason why good patriots can't smack 'em in the nose for being jerks. Yet your inaction only encourages these liberals. Yes...it would take a liberal management to enforce a ban like that. A conservative management would overlook it unless it got way out of hand.

Corporations do not give me freedoms, therefor they cannot take them away.
Your side is the one that constantly argues for greater freedoms for corporations over individuals.
Rather hypocritical of you to complain of eroded freedoms now.

I am one of those "mom and pop" stores. I cannot POSSIBLY buy in the volume Home Depot or Walmart does so I cannot even come close to selling items for what they can.
For years we sold unique products only to have them become wildly popular and then snached up by Home Depot and Walmart as a seasonal product. We lost a lot of the income from seasonal sales that helped to carry us through the year.
Additionally, I have customers who come into my showroom asking me to meet prices they find on-line for products. I can't do that EITHER since I have an acutal building. Many on-line places have no overhead but their website. I have insurance, property tax, employees, utilities....
Many of these folks probably think I am ripping them off or my prices are outrageous as well. I wonder how many of these people realize my employees oftentimes get paid before I do. How many of those mom and pops lay awake at night wondering how they are going to pay their bills and how many employees they need to let go to try to make ends meet.

Unfortunately people do not realize that part of the larger price they pay at a neighborhood store is for the personal service and the convenience of your being there.
If people don't realize this there is no way in a free market to prevent the Home Depots and WaldMarts from their marketing practices.

Since I don't know you, don't know your shop, don't know your prices, don't know your location, don't know your markups, don't know your overhead, don't know your employees, don't know your customer service paradigm I have to take your word for what you claim.
That changes nothing of what I have said in my previous post, that the local mom & pop shops and family owned grocery stores around here suck.
With some rare exceptions the "local" merchants around here suck.
I know these people, there are a very few I may not be that familiar with, but my folks have known them all their lives.
They sit on city councils and county boards and they do everything they can to keep any competition from coming to town or the area.
They are lying, inconsiderate, money grubbers and have been that way as long as I have known them.
If you didn't like how they treated you or their jacked up prices they didn't care because they knew it was a 45 mile or more trip to get to the real world where a $1.29 item wasn't marked up to $8.99.
You would go into these stores for common items and see dust on the shelf where they had a space for the item, then when you would ask about the item it was always the same, "I just sold the last one, but I can order that for you and have it in a week".
There was a small appliance dealer here, thankfully he finally took himself out of business, who would do things such as sell parts off appliances without pulling the appliance off the sales floor and would end up selling the appliance to someone else and either have to take it back or "order the part and it will be here in a week".
The local merchants fought hard to keep the Semi Super Wal Mart from being built here but thank God they failed.
There are reasons why what you see most is empty store fronts when you go up and down our downtown streets but it isn't because of HoDePo, Best Buy, Lowe's, Office Depot, or any other big box stores 45 miles away or because of our new Semi Super Wal Mart that has only been opened a few months.

As a company, Home Depot loans you work attire, which doubles as ad space for them. You can't put anything they don't approve of on that ad space because they pay you to wear it the way they want it. If they allow him to wear that button, they'll have to let everyone wear their buttons, and potentially infringing on someone else's copyright, opening them up to potential lawsuits. As such, the big wigs at Home Depot sat down, created a uniform, matching name tag and a few buttons for their employees, with the Home Depot legal team approving and vetting the whole thing.
Along comes Mr. God and Country with his button. When he was hired, he probably sign an adorable little uniform clause and he agreed to wear such uniform, name tag AND approved buttons. He chose to wear his own, cause he's 'special' and patriotic. He's told more than once to remove it because it's against the policy he agreed to follow when hired.
You know what, I hope he loses his case and is shown to be the rule breaker he is. There are no "Patriotic" clauses in his work contract. I hate, hate people like him who break the rules and expect a Patriotic break. What if he'd decided to wear a shirt festooned with the American flag instead of his uniform? Would that be okay too? Cause it's also considered "Patriotic" by some too.
And, a patriotic alternative was offered and refused. He forgot one basic rule about business: no one's irreplaceable. Idiot... And working for my company, here's what I would have done:
1st time: can't wear it, take it off and displinary measures next time. Wear approved buttons.
2nd time: can't wear it and verbal warning. Following disciplinary measures will end in dismissal.
3rd time: can't wear it, written warning and go home. Take the approved button.
4th time: can't wear it, final written warning, go home, wear approved button or bye bye.
5th time: too bad your employmenet had to end. Give me back the smock, the name tag and the approved buttons. Security will escort you out.
He'd have been out of a job in a regular work week and the corporate hiring manual would be stricter about uniforms.

That's his boss's fault. His boss shouldn't have let it pass for 18 months. BUT, the rule was still valid. And he broke it for 18 months.
One of my bosses taught me a very important lessons about respecting company rules: every boss will have their own way of following the rules but if a new boss comes along and follows all the rules, you're going to hate me for all the rules I gave you passes on.
Good bosses don't give you passes, they give you warnings and make sure no one will ever have to complain about his/her employees.
