You don't watch South Park I take it. They had characters pooping on pictures of Jesus and George Bush a few years back after Comedy Central refused to let them depict an image of Mohammed.

Whats more disrespectful to Jesus? Someone urinating on a picture of him or someone creating a picture of him and changing his skin tone and features to make him look European / American.

You have no idea what Jesus looked like so you have no idea if the painter of that picture changed his complextion, features and hair color, etc.
I have relatives from the middle east who look a lot like that painting.
To say that the painter made Jesus look American is rediculous as that painting is very much like many that were painted in Europe long before Europeans discovered the Americans and moved here.
Do you think it is disprespectful that in Africa they depect Jesus as a black man? In China often he's depicted as a Chinese man. In Japan as a Japanese man.. kimono and all?
People often depict Jesus to reflect their own race and culture. IMHO, it's one of the beauties of Christianity. Jesus stood for all humanity, regardless of race. By depicting Him as a reflection of one's culture brings Him and His message closer to the poeple.

It's not years... it's centuries. For example in Etheopea, one of the oldest Christian community on earth, Jesus has often been depicted as black.. from the very beginning.
He did not mention this because it does not help point of view.

This is probably his third time making fun of Jesus and this time he's gone too far. What a shock to see HBO green light this. Isn't is bad enough we have all this hatred in the world, at night when you turn on your TV, you don't expect HBO promoting more hatred. Christian's have been told to love thy neighbor and not fight back. Is this reason for Larry David to urinate on our religion? Is the man that pathetic and desperate for higher ratings? How sad. No other religion would allow it! It's always about Christianity and this time, people should stand up and fight back. Let HBO know you're angry, let your voices be heard and don't pay attention to those who say, turn your TV off. That's just not gonna happen anymore!!!
If people would stop racism and hatred of mankind, the world would be a better place. It's all about respect...

I just don't care that Jesus was peed on during a TV show. I don't care that Mohammed was depicted in some European newspapers. When people do something like this they want the attention and the outrage types are giving it to them.

We don't live in Africa (well at least I don't and I assume 99.9% of the posters here don't).
Though depicting him as black would be closer to the truth than depicting him with anglo features. I'm an atheist who does believe that Jesus existed. I simply don't believe he was anything other than a man who gained a following and had his history rewritten after his death to depict him as the son of god.

So dont post in thread then. People care about different issues and post about them on the forum. Saying "I dont care", while you try and excuse it a way by posting in the thread with a variety of posts like the ones you posted before shows you have an anti christian bias.

If you think that depicting Jesus as a European is disrespectful, then surely you would find depicting him as a black to be disrespectful as he was most likely neither.
I was born and lived for years in Africa. So while I'm not posting from there now, it's where I'm from.
Though depicting him as black would be closer to the truth than depicting him with anglo features.
How is depicting Jesus as black closer to the truth? Most poeple in the middle east have no negroid blood in them at all. They are and have always been mostly Caucasoid.
"The term Caucasian race (also Caucasoid) has been used to denote the general physical type of some or all of the indigenous populations of Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caucasian_race
I'm an atheist who does believe that Jesus existed. I simply don't believe he was anything other than a man who gained a following and had his history rewritten after his death to depict him as the son of god.
He was, at the very least a man whose teachings have had a profound inflluence on our world. If most poeple were to actually follow his teacings this world would be a much better place.
The point of the thread is that over 4 billion poeple on this earth hold Jesus to a very high regard either as a great teacher, a great prophet or as the son of God. Showing gross disrespect for Jesus only served to attack those who believe this. It's down right disrespectful.
I have no problem with Muhammad jokes. I have no problem with many jokes I've seen about Jesus, the prophets, etc. I do have a problem with crosses in viles of pee and someone making a comidy skit out of peeing on a painting of Jesus. The intent is to attack those who believe hold Him dear and to show disrespect for what He stands for.

Really, what did Curb Your Enthusiam ever say about Islam? was there urine to be found anywhere?
Let me see, the Burka episode:
Finally, a friendly Muslim woman (Moon Unit Zappa) wearing a burka lets Larry in, and Larry decides to fix her up with Michael.
Yeah, that sounds really offensive!

He ****s on everybody! The premise of the show is humor that is completely not "PC".
The entire last season was devoted to black people, and the previous episode was about people in wheelchairs (and ended with one of them being forced into a coat closet against her will).

it wasn't so much the peeing - it was the commentary on people who see jesus crying in paintings. this may not surprise you too much but I don’t hold much as sacred as far as symbolism goes.

"And the Pope (Benedict XVI) said quote 'A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle. Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time." :))
I love South Park. Especially since they hold nothing sacred and usually once you think about it you'll realize that the overall point of their episode is spot on. For instance, the earlier scene I mentioned where they had characters (Terrance and Phillip) pooping on Jesus and George Bush was in direct response to the unwillingness of Comedy Central to allow them to put an image of Mohammed in the cartoon. They were actually exposing the hypocrisy of the situtation by showing how they were allowed to do one thing that might be offensive yet not allowed to do another. Yet many failed to see the point and got outraged:rolleyes: then too.
I'm not saying that there isn't a hypocrisy in our media / TV (because there is), I'm merely saying that those who get so outraged need to get a life or learn to use a remote control.

To you, I say:
1.)Don't say that since they shouldn't be offended but are, you shouldn't be offended but are because they are offended when they shouldn't be. In more child-like terms, as people who feel this way are, "HE DOES IT, SO I WILL!"
2.)If they are rightfully offended, then why aren't you there backing those groups up every time someone attacks them like you are here for Christians?

Larry David splashed urine on a picture of Jesus as a guest is someone's bathroom.
He did not have the common decency or courtesy to clean his own urine.

Nothing overly demeaning, other than mocking a burka more or less. Of course, I dont really think he did anything overly demeaning to Christianity either. But again, if he offends you, simply dont watch his show.
So he did nothing on the scale of urine?

What scale is urine on? It was a splatter of urine caused by medication. You are acting as if he ripped the picture off the wall and urinated all over it. The Holocaust Survivor was much more offensive than this I would think, yet I dont remember any outrage over that episode (which was also hilarious BTW).

You know...I don't even watch "Curb", but this would appear to be nothing more than a case of Breitbart trying to gin up a controversy where none exists.
It's reminiscent of the incident where CBS affiliates were fined due to an orgy scene in "Without A Trace". The scene was not reported to the FCC until approximately a week after the episode had aired, when an alert came out from the Parents Television Council urging members to report the show for indecency. The reports came mainly from people who HAD NOT WATCHED ANY PART OF THE EPISODE, even the scene in question (despite a link to the video in the alert).
I swear...people need to find something more constructive to do with their time.

So how many images of religious deities does David urinate on each show?
I think his show is a peice of lowbrow garbage, so I dont watch th crap anyway.
But yes, he did deliberately use urine for a reason instead of a far more plausible fluid like spray from a beer can or a splash of water from turning the water faucet on too high, etc, if that was all he was trying to do was mock religious gullibility.
He knows that dragging Christ through the dirt, mud, or urine is a sure b et to get elite approval and defense from every intelectual wannabe on the planet.

Larry David splashed urine on a picture of Jesus as a guest is someone's bathroom.
He did not have the common decency or courtesy to clean his own urine.
He then portrays people going to the bathroom praying to the "crying" Jesus.
That is not "simply comedy." And, it certainly WAS mocking religion.
Sounds like he was mocking idolatry not Christianity.

You don't watch South Park I take it. They had characters pooping on pictures of Jesus and George Bush a few years back after Comedy Central refused to let them depict an image of Mohammed.
As a South Park fan, I don't think that is in the same boat. South Park was simply making fun of the muslim's inability to retaliate in a manner that suits what they built up. In other words, they were poking fun how muslims talk the talk but do not walk the walk.

What show were you watching?
Matt and Trey had one purpose in mind when they wrote the pooping on Jesus scene and that was to expose the hypocrisy at Comedy Central. The episode in question was one of the "Cartoon Wars" episodes where they were mocking Family Guy. So within the South Park episode they were doing a sendup of Family Guy where Peter Griffin was going to open the door to find Mohammed at the door. They had it all written and ready to go but Comedy Central told them they couldn't show Mohammed because it might offend muslims. So Matt and Trey did a quick revision of the plot and replaced the scene with the one of Jesus and George Bush pooping on each other. Basically Matt and Trey were trying to show that it was very hypocritical to not allow them to show something that might be offensive to muslims yet they allowed something that might be offensive to christians.
Don't believe me? Listen to it in Matt and Trey's own words.
This is the commentary track part two of Cartoon Wars. Around the 2:50 mark they specifically start talking about the scene and about how its okay to rip on Jesus but you can't do it to Mohammed. And they talk about how the whole point of their scene was exactly what I just said.
WARNING: Matt and Trey use the swear word version of poop when talking about the scene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vthvmNqS2A8&feature=related
I am still of the mind that people who get offended at this stuff need to get a life but I also don't deny that there is hypocrisy in what is allowed sometimes.

Those were the same episode. My guess is that they put the Jesus and George Bush thing in response to the Muhammad not being able to be shown just standing there.
What happened is protected by the Constitution. The only thing you can really do is turn off the TV. You can protest also, but don't expect to get anything legally to be accomplished.

let someone do a skit where they make a reference against Jews, Muslims, or any other non-Christian faith and see the outrage from the left.
Mel Brooks turned the Spanish Inquisition into a musical number, and had as a fake coming attraction at the end of one of his movies "Hitler on Ice".
South Park is often referred to as an equal opportunity offender... but the mere fact that one of the main characters is Jewish means that a great deal of insults are hurled towards Jews.
Kyle is blamed for 9/11 because he's a Jew.
When Kyle explains he can't be a pirate because "Jews can't be pirates", Cartman is glad that he came to terms with his "disability"
The Mr. Hankey Christmas Classics episode features Cartman singing "Jews play stupid games. Jews, because they're lame"
For crying out loud, Cartman becomes Hitler and tries to exterminate the Jews, meanwhile Kyle sees Mel Gibson's movie and decides that Jews need to apologize for killing Jesus.
And you can believe it when I say: Outrage factor? None whatsoever.
Super Best Friends episode had Muhammed appear throughout... along with Joseph Smith, Krishna, Buddah, Lao Tse, Moses, and Sea-Man.
As for muslims... can anyone say Achmed the Dead Terrorist?
There was a scientology episode of south park. Only people to be outraged were scientologists.
Let's not forget Team America, where the Arabic language consists of "Derka, Allah, Muhammad Jihad".
You Don't Mess With The Zohan. Did anybody talk about that movie? At all? Ever? So much for liberal outrage.
There was an episode of House where a woman's conversion into Hasidic Judaism was considered a symptom... a manifestation of masochism. Outrage? None that I recall.
Seems like, despite the fact that Christians are far from the sole subject of ridicule in the entertainment world, they represent perhaps 95% of the whining and complaining about jokes/insults from television shows.

No one does indignant outrage better than right wing conservative christians who think they are being persecuted.

Those were the same episode. My guess is that they put the Jesus and George Bush thing in response to the Muhammad not being able to be shown just standing there. It is sad all religions cannot be made fun of, but, as Trey and Stone said, at least Comedy Central admitted that they were afraid of being attacked for it, instead of coming up with some "not wanting to offend" excuse.
I've addressed this several times already this thread. Matt and Trey wanted to put Mohammed in there but Comedy Central would not let them. Matt and Trey retaliated by doing the Bush and Jesus pooping on each other scene to show the hypocrisy. Matt and Trey were not afraid of being attacked (see the link to the commentary they made about the episode) but they acknowledged that the network might be.

Does anyone think Larry has the guts to do the same thing to
a picture of Mohammed?
Maybe he does. The network? No.

As a South Park fan, I don't think that is in the same boat. South Park was simply making fun of the muslim's inability to retaliate in a manner that suits what they built up. In other words, they were poking fun how muslims talk the talk but do not walk the walk.
Actually it was more the network's decision not to allow Mohammad to be put on.
